OFFICIAL Te Maire Martin Signs Three Year Deal with the Warriors

Unfair assessment when the claim was that our attack was good - how is this known without comparing to what good looks like, pray tell?

We've scored 80+ points in the past 3 games, why not use that? Instead of the period in the season where combinations are typically still forming. Then you've gone and used the league average for finals teams against our first 4 performances, it's a ridiculous comparison to make.

Quite simple really.

First couple of games we didn't have Adam Reynolds.

Claim was about Kevin coaching them to be better at attack.

My 2c is that its smart recruiting by Donuts and Ikin leading to the biggest outcomes here, ala - Reynolds direct impact on our rise more than say Kevvy being a master coach.

This is why, context matters - referenced in the previous posts further up.

Reynolds only missed round 1 and Ikin wasn’t even at the club when we signed Adam

First game back after covid and first game ever for Broncos - not really a true indicator of the man.
Second, I said Donuts and Ikin. Donuts grabbed Kev and stuffed him into a plane to sign Reynolds.

My point remains - The bulk of the improvements we are seeing are through smart recruitment, not quality coaching.

Agreed.. Ikin, DD and Reynolds are the ones making those last ditch defensive efforts, absolutely nothing to do with the coaching at all. I will say it again, nothing to do with the coaching, at all...

Talk about our attack all you want but our defense is winning us these games, that's 100% a coaching thing.

If you're trying to distance yourself from crediting our coaching staff at this point, you obviously backed the wrong horse and aren't able to concede you got it wrong, seek professional help there, it will hinder you in many aspects of life.

Agreed just as kevie and coaching staff should be criticised when we are defending like 7th graders they should also be applauded for seemingly starting to change it. The last 2 games our defence has been so much better. i'm still not 100% happy with how we look lost occasionally in defence and our lack of controlling the ruck at times but you cannot question our goal line defence.

Hopefully the coaching staff are still working hard to get a better defensive structure in place and start teaching these kids you need to control the ruck with smart tackles to even be considered a top 4 team.

All in all i have been critical of kevie and his coaching but he and the rest of the coaches should be applauded with how our defense has gone the last couple of games and also how he has improved with his bench rotation . Hopefully things are starting to turn around.

Your arguing with the guy who may have bagged Kev more than anyone.

Our attack is actually not doing that much better than previous seasons. Our defence has massively improved the last few weeks. Reynolds and Capewell have obviously helped that but you can’t discredit coaching for how good the attitude in defence has been.

There is an argument to be made that injuries to Niu, Mead, and Turpin has forced Kev to make the right decisions with our spine but which has undoubtedly improved our team massively but it is what it is.

I don't know the stats but gut feel would suggest our attacking, at least the last couple of weeks, has been going a lot better than I can remember. When was the last time we won three in a row AND two of the victories scored more than 30?

If it's purely a coaching thing then we should have seen this last year?

Kev is a bog average at best coach - he's done wonders for fixing up culture in the place - but a master coach and tactician - where's the evidence of that?

The blow torches will return soon enough - they've merely abated off the back of a few wins. Four weeks ago the media was putting him up as one of the first to be sacked this season.

I'd wager if ARey picks up an injury we'll find out pretty quick how fast that heat returns.

Massive difference between fluking tries because of individual brilliance and what we've been doing this year. We aren't back yet and the hype might be too early but there's really good signs at the club right now.

We were a complete mess when Kev took over, easily the most out of shape roster in the NRL. DD couldn't even start his job until halfway through the season, wholesale change was required in the football department, it goes on and on. Yet, you thought he could wave a wand around and put us in the top 8, right?

Milford on a million, TPJ putting in about every 5th game, Lodge on all sorts of money, our captain at the time will probably go down as the worst performing captain of the club. We had multiple players on our books playing for other clubs. It's ridiculous you just expect him to come in and turn us into a top 8 side in his first year.

Mastercoach? I never said that. I can tell you one thing though, nobody cares more about the club than he does. He's got the team defensively working hard for each other, that's usually the A1 indication that there's a good coach at the club. We didn't have ARey for Round 1 against last years Grand Finalists, no problem. No Haas last week, no problem. In years gone by if we didn't have Haas it was a case of how many points do the opposition actually want to score.

Also, there were signs of it last year. We pushed Penrith twice (you know, the team that would become the premiers), we beat the Roosters and finished the season strong. Unfortunately mastercoaches aren't just throwing their hands in the air, sometimes you got to put a bit of faith into one of your own.

Our attack has been a lot better than previous seasons.

We have a plan in attack and aren’t just throwing the ball around willy nilly waiting for someone to do something.

Last week our attack was focused on targeting Souths weakness.

You raise an excellent point with our roster. Doherty was instrumental in helping to clean that up, Ikin too.

As for caring about the club, you're probably right - but caring won't get you beating the storm. That takes a lot more.

Kev's unfortunately though never really had a track record of being a gun coach. We lurched out of utter dominance in origin after Mal moved on to coach Australia - scraping two narrow wins then a loss.

*takes a break to wipe some sand off the table*

Players like CSmith didn't want to play for him after 1 series with him at the helm even though he continued playing 3 additional seasons after quitting origin - he even refused to go pitch in at training while Kev was there. He referenced "odd" training methods and differences of opinion. Not the kind of guy you want saying that stuff about you given he's an easy shoe-in for an immortal slot when the time is right - love him or loathe him, he was the best #9 possibly ever, but definitely in living memory.

Kevin's bench utilisation I think you'd find not many disagreeing that it's been sub-par to poor - although this season has been less poor.

Kev's own boss when talking about him, came up with the "He's a really good person" instead of talking up how amazing his coaching ability is.

Anyway, we've totally derailed this thread. Sorry mods.

School's in for Broncos' No.1 student Te Maire

Two years on from his retirement, Darius Boyd’s influence at the Broncos remains strong with Te Maire Martin the latest to learn on the run from the two-time premiership winner.

Halfback Adam Reynolds, assistant coach John Cartwright and Boyd are helping Martin fine-tune his fullback play after resuming his NRL career in round seven following a three-year absence due to a brain bleed.

Reynolds delivers the spiralling high balls that Martin concedes “doesn’t come second nature” to defuse while Cartwright helps with his positional play in defence.

Boyd, who played 337 NRL games and won titles with the Broncos and Dragons, finishes it off with working on Martin’s vision and passing game in attack.

“They’re all probably getting sick of me asking so many questions,” Martin told NRL.com.

“Carty’s work is probably the most important for me. He helps me with the defensive side of things especially getting numbers right, you help organise the whole defensive line.

“Hopefully after that I can start to make more of an impact in attack because we’ve got some good outside backs that need some clean early ball.

“Guys like Kotoni Staggs and Herbie Farnworth, you want them one-on-one with the opposition as much as you can.

“The faster I can get our defensive line organised the more I can concentrate on getting them some ball. I’m working on catch more high balls too.

“I dropped one [last week] but Kotoni got in my ear thinking I didn’t drop it so it made me second guess myself. Looking at the replay I dropped it clean.”

Other than a failed captain’s challenge, the Broncos’ investment in Martin is so far paying early dividends.

Martin’s return to the NRL has been one of the success stories of the season with the former Wests Tigers, Panthers and Cowboys playmaker eyeing off a new deal at Red Hill.

The former Kiwi representative was cleared to return by an independent doctor in New Zealand last year, where he played local football alongside his siblings.

It was from there his manager urged him to give the NRL one last opportunity after originally retiring aged just 23.

“Because I had to finish and didn’t want to, I got to go home and started fishing, hunting and surfing… all that kind of stuff, but I realised that I can do plenty of that after football,” said Martin, who played 10 games at fullback for the Cowboys in 2018-19.

“As much as I do enjoy the simple things in life, footy isn’t always there, you might get a 10-year span if you’re lucky.

“My goal at the start of the year when I got over here was to try and play some consistent footy in Queensland Cup and make sure my head was right.

“I got the opportunity earlier than I thought. I’m a bit more grateful for everything after having the game taken away from me once.

“If anyone knows how fast the game can be taken from you it’s me.”

As for the thought of a new deal at the Broncos, Martin is taking it all in his stride.

“It’s no secret if you’re playing good footy the club will want to re-sign you. It’s not a huge focus for me, obviously I do want to stay here but I just want to play consistent footy,” he said.

“I want to get my body back to where it needs to be because it’s a bit off at the moment. There’s places I want it to be but I can’t get to because of my fitness levels and missing some of the pre-season.

“I’ve got to get back to the drawing board and catch some high balls before I start worrying about contracts.”

Hopefully Boyd can teach him that cut out pass he did so well.

There wasn't a fullback in the game that could set up his outside men like Boyd when he was in his prime.

Darius studied tapes of all the opposition centres and wingers looking for their patterns in defence .
Then worked out which pass was the one to use against which opposition . Then executed .
