Thaiday will miss this clash if he takes the early guilty plea for his choke on Tapau on the weekend, might cause some interesting re-shuffles if so..

Assuming Darius isn't back for another couple of weeks..

1. Kahu
2. Reed
3. Copley
4. Hodges (c)
5. Maranta
6. Milford
7. Hunt
8. McGuire
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Oates
12. Gillett
13. Parker

14. Nikorima
15. Garbutt
16. Ofahengaue
17. Wallace

Re: Round 9 - Penrith Panthers - Pre Game discussion

So Thaiday could miss this game for the choke hold on Taupau. Meanwhile Reynolds only cops a week for tripping (again) and they seem to have forgotten that he was placed on report for the shoulder charge/ knee thing.

The NRL doesn't know the meaning of the word "CONSISTENCY".

tin foil hat time ... it is also coming up to the origin series and blues players never get as much time on the sidelines through suspension as their maroon conterparts.

besides, I want Reynolds to get a light sentence ... that way he is a chance to get selected for NSW, and that is just awesome from a QLD perspective.

I was just thinking the same thing when someone on Facebook pointed out that it's close to Origin.
If they want Grub to play Origin I am happy to let them as long as he doesn't injure any one else or get away with his offences on field. (He should have been sin binned long before his 3rd offense last time).

Also, the Qld team need to learn not to retaliate like they did last year. If they had ignored it last year and played football they would have gone much closer to winning the series.

It isn't looking good for Sammy or the Broncos.

I think a lot depends on the availability of Boyd. I'm going to lean towards the side of caution and assume he isn't right so that may mean that Oates stays on the wing and somebody like Lowrie comes into sure up the defence. However, I'm not even sure if Todd is available given he's been unable to plays for Norths in recent weeks. Is he injured or suspended?

I could also see Blair shifting over into the backrow with Wallace being promoted. That's at longer odds but certainly something that's on the table.

David Stagg is still running around so he might get a crack. Lets just hope to god he doesn't give whitchurch another fucking run. I think Oates will switch to second row because Kahu atleast should be back.

I'd probably prefer Oates in the #11. Let's see what he can do. We should have enough fit backs to cover the 1-5. In fact, if Kahu is back, we still have Maranta & Vidot fighting it out for one wing spot, and that's without Boyd's return.

If you go with Oates, either way you'll need somebody as cover because that transition really can't be easy, particularly in defence.

That's important too because the Panthers are lethal down their edges.

I'd kinda like to see Arrow or Greinke get a game. Not sure how well Greinke is going this year though, but Arrow has been impressive when I've seen him this year and was good on the weekend.

He's played a lot more in the forwards as he has in the backs IIRC. You could argue it's been harder for him to adapt to wing and he'd be more at home in the forwards. He'd be beside Copley or Reed, with Milf normally out wider, so not the safest unit, but Blair or one of our benchies would be a target laterally.

You're right but consider this.

Oates is coming off a pre-season where he spent the majority of it rehabbing a shoulder. When he was able to train, it was revealed that he had been training exclusively in the backs. So he wouldn't have spent that much time working with Milford in defence and would struggle to handle the responsibility given he has to practically defend two positons and be able to make sound judgements.

I'm sure he'll handle it fine early, but as he feels fatigued, I'm sure he'll start making poor decisions and it will cost the team.

Now, I don't think he should be ruled out altogether. What I'm saying is that we're going to need a specialist there, not only to protect Milford but get the most out of Oates who has been integral to getting the Broncos sets started and can be an absolute weapon on the fringes.

Also, has he played anywhere but wing in 1st grade?

Oates played backrow last year but I don't think he ever played for anything more than 30 minutes.

Which is another reason why I'm hesitant.

I see your point on his training. To play Devils Advocate, it's not like he would never have been fatigued before in the back row, so you'd assume there would be some muscle memory there in terms of how to react when the small guys try to split defenders on the edges and put people through.

Also, those 30 minutes in the forwards would be in an impact role, there are subtle techniques to preserve yourself for longer minutes without sacrificing effectiveness. I also recall a game or two where there's been an injury and he's been made to play longer, but can't recall if any were in the forwards or if they were all just in the backs.

Why not move Wallace to starting prop and Blair to second row?

Oates is not needed in the forwards. Just replace Thaiday with Rod Griffin !!!!! Don't know if that's possible but Lowrie would be fine for Thaiday. No need to go moving multiple players around to simply replace a second rower.

Because Glenn is back in 2 weeks or so and Sam will be back in 1 week, there's no real point in moving Adam (Who's already having a hard time adjusting to his role) when we can just use Oates or someone.

Sam adapted just fine when he moved from Second row to prop back to second row? Blair knows both positions well. I don't think it would hurt his development.
