With all this Hass and salary cap talk, I wanted to see if it was as bad as everyone in the media is making it out to be (see Broncos salary cap squeeze article). Below is the estimated salaries of our 2023 squad (my general estimates - but I think they're close enough), and potential salaries of a 2025 squad. Both fit in around the $12.2million cap (top 30 + development players), however, given I couldn't be bothered working our development player salaries or bonuses for long term players, this is probably an over estimate of our spend (made the minimum 120k for everyone).

Conclusion: If we let Hass leave and replace him with some random 500k player, we should be ok in keeping all our superstars and giving everyone else a nice pay bump (helps that Farnworth and Flegler are going too). if we sign Hass, a lot of players may have to take a cut, or we are going to have to let some players go...

What ya think? Have I got it completely wrong?

I could see Reynolds and Capewell taking slight paycuts for 25.
Mams contract I'd be building up to that figure I wouldn't jump straight to $700000 if we didn't have too. He's still very young. Walsh I'd be doing the same but abit more than Ezra. Letting them know that we will upgrade them like we have with Payne as they are the future of the club.
I can't see Walsh going anywhere else so as much he's going to be worth alot he's a 10 year investment so we have to be smart about it aswell as keep him happy.

I could see Reynolds taking a reduced payment, but Cobbo? Also with Jensen and Hetherington likely to be in the starting 17 each week, you would assume they would attract more money.

Also capnwill be $13milluon next year, so it looks like we could keep everyone!

Yeah to be honest, despite having won nothing yet, a lot of our players will be deserving big upgrades.

As much as we're looking to hit a "golden era", if you look carefully we're only in this situation because we have a lot of our younger players hitting form while still on their formative contracts. So we could very well be torn apart in the next year or two, while still not achieving any success.

I've been firmly on the "do everything reasonable to keep Payne" train, however when you look at the roster, Walsh is arguably more important to our success. In fact if you look at the upgrades required, it would be hard to see how we do keep them all even if Payne were to take a reasonable $1 - $1.1 million.

Herbie & Flegler will save us approx $800k - $1m between them (not including their replacements), but how much of that has already been spent on the upgraded contracts to Cobbo & Carrigan? You'd say that Maam would require a $300k - $400k+ upgrade, and Walsh would need well over $500k extra per year, where does that come from? Fucking over Oates to help foot the bill doesn't help anyone, I would say that the logical decision would be giving Haas a fair (but not ridiculous) offer, and if his manager/family are too greedy to accept it, tell him to walk.

With all this Hass

Conclusion: If we let Hass leave

I think to an extent we will have to hold back on the "upgrade in good faith" like we did with Haas... even though that would assist with retaining some of them.

Walsh is probably the only one I'd be willing to upgrade on his current deal to show his worth to the club, but others like Mam and co might have to see out their current deal before the big money comes.

Reynolds will retire at the end of 2025... which will foot the bill for the majority of Walsh.

Capewell will surely be due some downgrading, but might end up being one of those that is lost to ensure we keep Piakura and Riki... as they are future players.

Even a guy like Kobe to me is a vital cog in our team... I'd be hoping we can retain him without blowing the budget. He's a culture signing whilst being extremely good at his role and a permanent fixture in the 17.

The way I see it, if we keep Haas we will most likely lose some players like Staggs or Cobbo, I think Cobbo has to be playing Centre to justify the wage and be beating Staggs workrate which he generally does at Wing already, I think we will struggle to keep more than 1 expensive outside back when we have the likes of Walsh and Mam who will get big upgrades as well.

This doesn't even factor in Mozer who might also be in that group in 2025.

But at the same time the 3rd party situation is up in the air on what can work for us.

Going deep into the finals or making grand finals will do wonders for players staying for a little less than what they can get in the market. Every footy player wants to be playing finals and grand finals!
Would also help being successful every company around would want a piece of most players

I'd rather keep Staggs and Cobbo over Haas.

Well Hass is resigned lol. So we might have to decide soon
We might be able to get away with it if we can get Capewell to be a middle as a replacement for Flegs/Palasia, Willison being the other middle replacement for that.

I assume Baker will be behind them both in that sceniaro and on min wage.

You could also convince Staggs, Reynolds and Capewell to cut a 100k off each of their salaries. With a rising cap, we might be able to keep everyone!

Reynolds apparently is on a big 3rd party so I can see that happening.
