The Broncos Salary Cap: 2023 to 2025

You could also convince Staggs, Reynolds and Capewell to cut a 100k off each of their salaries. With a rising cap, we might be able to keep everyone!
I think we will lose Capewell, Oates and possibly Hetherington. I think we will also lose Sailor at some point if he isn't in the 17. I hope that we don't pay overs for any non spine player to stay as that will cause issues moving forward.

Oates would be getting vets allowance + base - would be insane to go elsewhere, he's not getting a great contract anywhere else given the injuries

Good signing especially if it’s end of 27 rather than 26 but they need to make sure that Ezra and Walsh get upgraded before they do anything further.

Will always be competitive with Carrigan, Haas, Mam and Walsh at the club. I can see plenty of players not being retainable but hopefully they can get a few bargains. Lower the aging players or scrap them e.g. Reynolds (not scrapped), Capewell and Oates. Probably lose one of Hetho, Willison and Te Kura. As long as we maintain our spine (+ Mozer) the rest will sort itself out.

Haas will have next to no impact on signing others. He's effectively getting a 250-300k pay rise. If that means we lose Walsh or Mam then our cap was fucked to begin with. The Haas upgrade will probably match the Reyno downgrade.

We'll retain both of them. Oates and Reyno will get less money, Flegler and Herbie will save us at least 1.1m you'd think. We'll be fine.

We'll obviously lose a few players we don't want but we have 2 maybe 3 years to really shake some premierships, if we start to lose players after that so be it, if we win a premiership or 2 I'll be too happy to give a shit.

If I’m being entirely cut throat I would say we could move on without Riki, Oates, and even Cobbo.

I’m also of the growing opinion that Haas must not be seen as a must keep. No 1.3m$ deal, no 10 year deal. $1.1 per year max, 5 year max. If you could only choose to keep one forward, everyone would (should) say Patty. Why would we give $1.2m for 10 years to a forward who isn’t even our most vital forward.

A guy like Haas is incredible if you get him at below market value but if you’re paying market value, it’s no longer good value because you can replace his output with smart buys. You pay a guy like Walsh as much as you want because you can’t buy another Walsh - no combination of players equal a Walsh.

Lol nvm

Realistically, success means that we won't be able to keep everyone, just got to which guys we have to retain in order to maintain yearly success.

I reckon we will keep everyone we want. To shift Haas from asking for a release to extending before going to market (yes yes I know) is huge, absolutely phenomenal business AND to do so without overspending - just wow. We knew Donuts was going to be a game change and has he ever been!

If you look at the side now, as much as I don't think we will lose Capes because he will take a downgrade, even if he doesn't, we have enough experience in the forwards now to cover him and if you have to sacrifice him to keep Piaks and Riki, you do it. Patty, Payne and Jordan are ready to lead the pack now, so fast forward 12 months, Capes' leadership is no longer quite as important.

And Oatesy should and will be a career Bronco but if we are being cut throat, if you lose him to keep Staggs, Cobbs and Aqua Man, well unfortunately, you do it.

He's also lining himself up as a personality for post footy career... if he left broncos I could only see him going to Dolphins to maintain his momentum in the media post footy.

He might just want another 2years or so on reasonable money ($300k-$350k), knowing the backend of that will probably see him surpassed by the younger guys pushing through and him being squad depth.

Personally, i think Mam is the one we probably wont be able to afford. Unless Reece is unselfish, he will be the highest paid player at the club when his next contract comes around. In the next 2 years we have Arey, Capewell, Mam, Walsh, Riki Jensen, Oates, Staggs, Cobbo, Mozer, Piakura, Walters, Hetherington and Willison who are the main ones we want to keep. We also have a lot of depth players off contract ( Paix, Sailor, Fletcher-Baker, Hoeter ), thats a lot of players to tie down in the next 2 years.

In 2 years I would happily move on Jensen, Oates, Cobbo, Capewell;, and Riki for Mam. A few more I would reluctantly move on too.

Plus Reynolds doesn’t have 3 years in him

Let's look at them:

Arey - Downgrade and will accept
Capewell - Downgrade or let go - not a priority
Mam - Upgrade and will stay
Walsh - Massive upgrade and knows the grass is not greener on the other side, loves the club and will stay for slight unders
Riki - Slight upgrade or let go
Jensen - Downgrade or let go - not a priority
Oates - Downgrade and will be surpassed most likely
Staggs - Keep on the same or let go - think he will accept
Cobbo - Depending on trajectory - will stay same or slight upgrade
Mozer - Likely due for an upgrade but no idea where he will be in 2025
Piakura - Upgrade and priority re-signing but not at any cose
Walters - Will stay on the same, happy to be at a successful club and his retention very much rests on Mozer's progression anyway
Hetherington - Keep on the same or slight upgrade - as great as he is, not a priority at present now we have Payne and Patty locked up
Willison - Likely upgrade and his value is really hard to predict right now

We are going to have to rely on some of these blokes to take a bit less. Payne wasnt willing to budge like Patty. Mam and Walsh are due massive upgrades. Unless they take unders, they are both going to be a million plus a year.

I cant see how we benefit from letting people like Jensen and Hetherington go because we wont upgrade them. They have both earned decent upgrades. They perform week in week out and we dont really have ready made replacements for them, and i cant see us getting better value from other off contract players anyway.

Walsh is like $1.3m-$1.5m... they will start the conversation with him being the highest paid bronco of all time and hopefully move from there and sort it out. I'd like for them to do it over the off season, but realistically they should leave it until next year as they work their way through the 2024 off season guys.

But I don't think Mam goes straight to $1m... If he was dropped into the tigers, dogs, etc. does he suddenly change their fortunes because they've offered him $1m to be a halfback for them?

Is he a 6 like Dylan Brown, Cody or Munster where they are key focal points of the team's attack and whether they win or lose.

I just don't think Mam is a game changer at this stage of his career... he could get there, but not yet... to me he's more a role player for us at the moment, which is fine because he's like 20... his support play is awesome and he's getting better at finishing off backline movements that come his way.

As he develops he'll start demanding the ball a bit more, which is when the big money should be coming... but as a current role player I'd hope we don't blow our load at all costs to retain him. I'd hope for a 2yr extension at a decent upgrade, which gives him room to upgrade again as he develops.

I think Mam gets the million because of the lack of quality halves off contract. I dont think he is a million dollar player, but i think he will get it.

Mam isn’t getting 1m and Jensen is great value but a dime a dozen prop. Capewell doesn’t deserve an upgrade, he’s on a fair deal
