The Corey Oates Issue.

Moving into next year, if Siebs wants to carry a back on the bench and with Herbie and Xavier, plus Perese and Vudogo coming through, I wonder if Corey might end up filling in that bench role eventually. He’s perfect for it.

He has gone downhill since origin, its almost like that was his goal for the year, achieved it and now doesn't care. Not sure if there maybe a background injury.

Also around the time of the Milf/Boyd switch which may have affected his output.

If he stays it has to be only. 2 year contract maximum.
Any longer and it has to be an option in the CLUBS FAVOUR.
We don’t want to get burned again having a player past his use by date taking up heaps of salary cap space.

how quickly Broncos fans turn on a player
Yep it's crazy. Oates was the wonderkind last year. He gets injured, plays through with a form soump and instead of being rewarded for his courage he is touted as not worth keeping. Come on guys, don't be such bitches. Oatesy epitomises the kind of man the NRL needs. Someone kids can look up to that always has a cool head, never gets in fights and is always smiling and holds great interviews. We can offer him unders and the TPAs will take care of the rest. But we still need to pay him what he deserves.

If Oates left, I'd imagine a back 7 in 2020 something like
1. Milford
2. Boyd/Arthars
3. Arthars/Boyd
4. Staggs
5. Isaako
6. Bird
7. Dearden / SoS
No way no how. If Boyd's too shot to play fullback there's no way you'd play him on the wing, and if he's fit enough to play wing properly then he can go back to fullback.

Also leave Oatesy alone ya bastards. He's not getting the same quality of ball now, gets smashed from pillar to post every game, had his head belted in one of the grubbiest moves I've seen in years, and still comes in looking for work and takes those dirty carries. I've caught the love bug for sure but no way I'd be rolling Oates for Herbie.

Further to this, I challenge ANYBODY to perform at their best when they’ve just had their first child...

Further to this, how can no one see that the way Oates is playing is due to the players beside him.
1. Rushing out: Yes he did rush out. ALL of our wingers do it. Oates is usually saving his centres from screwing up. This time it was on him. But name another game where he did it this year.
2. Boyd: Boyd isn't there creating numbers. If he does pass at all it isn't getting to Oates. He threw a pass 3m behind Oates in a previous game.
3. Shiba: Shiba cannot hold the ball or draw defenders when he does manage to hold the ball.
4. Best Fifi: Unfortunately for Oates Fifi is a very strong ball runner and inclined to run rather than pass. Fortunately for us Fifi is a very strong ball runner.

He definitely does have issues under the highball but there has to be a spot in the team for him. Preferably where he sees more ball.

Past his used by date? He’s fucking 24

I’m not saying he is past his use by date.
However if we were to give him a long term deal that could be a risk.
Look I hope he stays I just think we should have an insurance policy if it’s a long term deal.

He's at a ripe age at 24, his best days are still to come. I'd offer him $2 million over 4 years. They just don't build 6'4 wingers like Oates anymore.

Well if he wants the deal, and the money go looking for the ball.
He did actually do this on Friday night, which was nice to see.
He can still manage to drop a ball every couple of games, which can swing momentum. He just hasn’t been upto the standard that I have seen him at as of the last 5 or 6 weeks.
It may well be the contract playing on his mind.

I do sort of feel for Oates to be honest. He stepped up and turned himself into a Winger (and a really good one at that) because it was what the team needed at the time.

Now he's stuck in the difficult position of having his form plateau and even decline slightly while he's in the middle of a contract negotiation and we're viewing him in a position where clubs rarely spend up big even though he came up through the grades as a Backrower. Now he's essentially sacrificed any chance of reaching his potential in that position because he's spend the last few years playing a lower paid position that we needed him in at the time.

I'm not trying to be too sentimental and in isolation it doesn't justify us offering him silly money to stay, but when people are being harsh on him for entertaining more lucrative offers I think it's only fair to remember that he's in the position he's in because he put the Broncos first and he's now potentially paying the price for that to some extent.

If you start worrying about 24 year olds being past their use by date at the end of their next contract you wont sign anyone, he's realistically got two long term contracts to go.

Oates may not be worth more then 500k but I want him to stay. He has not been playing bad at all. Still needs to get his errors down but remains a weapon for us. Plus he is just a great character to have at the club. Good ambassador and club man.

I just would not put pressure on the bank for any winger. There is just so much talent in that positionit makes, it makes anyone replaceable.

The initial reports are he was being offered 500k which to me is perfectly commensurate with his value. The truth is we don't know what players get paid and we never will until the NRL publishes the data.

If he's 700k, cya later, if he's happy to re-sign at 500k, I'd keep him. He's a bonehead and always has been but he's also a game winner, makes big metres and is passionate about the club. He's our bonehead and I love him.

He brings what a lot of other wingers don't bring, Ferguson is a decent comparison but in my view he is also the best winger in the game and at 29 is way more experienced. Oates would find a spot in any other team, if he was on the end of the Storm backline he'd look like a million dollars.

What? You think the Broncos might offer him a 7 year contract which just may include the possibility of Oates being completely spent at the extreme old age of 31? Yep, something to worry about! It would've probably have been better had you simply wrote 'I posted a dumb thing' in your following post.

I'd pay 500k just because I'm sick of hearing about his contract every 2 weeks.
