The End of Empire: The Sharp Decline of the Brisbane Broncos

Well yes add that in and there is 3 sides to it. Noone here knows for sure.

You'd be surprised exactly what and how much some people on here know for sure.

That makes more sense to me than the club screwing over the guy they had put a huge chunk of the salary cap aside for.

I have mixed feelings about Karmichael, I love his style of play and would like to see him back in the Broncos lineup in the future. But I also hate the fact that he gave the AFL a massive free kick and left the Broncos in a bad state.

Plus everyone I know who has actually met him said that he is a massive knobhead.

The empire was always going to come down at some stage but I didn't think Lockyer would still be playing TBH. There are some pretty obvious probelms with the club at the moment which need to be sorted out ASAP IMO. The whole club needs an attitude adjustment and a kick up the arse + a good clean out of players, Admin and coaching staff.

Didnt Bennet clean out the coaching staff a couple seasons back?

Yes, and the following season we won a Premiership.

Any comment on that Stu???

in my opinion the broncos legacy has not died but it is coming in line with the rest of the nrl. Up to 8 years ago all qld jnrs would play for the broncos full stop. Player recuitment was not as needed for the broncos as qld jnrs were left alone by other clubs. Now that nrl has become more pro all clubs have a feeder team in Qld plus scouts there as well. If it was 8 years ago now we would have the likes of slater and inglis and 11 soo players in our side. It was not a fair playing field in the past we had a major advantage, We had a jnr breeding ground of a state. A f@#$ up in player retention was not felt as there was 2 and 3 players waiting. Now those players are still there but allined with all the other nrl clubs. Club hierracy and management does not matter when your team winning.....................

Other clubs scouts have been hunting around QLD forever.

Inglis was was brought to QLD by the Storm, so there was no way he would of ever been a Bronco. Slater was looked over by Scouts of several clubs, including the Broncos, but considered to small.

yeah but Smiths from Logan.... Red hill cant afford to have DVD players stolen

only used those two for examples

Matt is smart with the whole Qcup side of things to be honest and wont lead you wrong when he post.

Matt, didn't Slater sell himself as a halfback?

I swear I read that once.

Even still... to small???? Alfie says hi...

you would think after Alfie the "to small" excuse would be gone.

Yep! Mainly due to his lack of size he had played halfback most of his junior career.

In fact he is old man who was a former Dolphins player rang Redcliffe trying to get him a start. At the time Redcliffe had the QLD Under 16 five eighth and halfback so said "Thanks we don't need any more halves"

So if he sold himself as a fullback we could have had him instead of Hunt?

I'd say the to small excuse is more prominent than ever before. With more and more Polynesians playing League and the more mechanical style the game is now played in, scouts are on the look out for "athletes" more so than "footballers".

Astroboy, we dont want or need Bennett back. he was at the heart of all of our poor player retention/recruitment.

Nup, that was Bruno, read the article. Bruno restricting the say Bennett had in things was the whole reason for him leaving. I suppose you would have been calling for Bennett's head in 92/93/98/2000 when he was proving year in year out what a genius he is too? You know, back when the Broncos were the powerhouse of RL, the club stood for everything good and right, the players had discipline, we actually recruited and held on to the right players? So what changed between then and now? Bruno that's what. Read the 1st post again. The end-of-2008-season episode would never have happened back then, because Bennett ran the things that mattered, not some dumb-ass CEO.

The Broncos have turned into a business and Bennett was imo not ready to accept that. And may i ask why you only use 92/93/98/00? Does the Superleague not matter to you as well? and what about 06?

I guess Super League slipped my mind since it was really only half a competition, but yeah now you mention it, it was another premiership victory under the coach who has won more than any other. 2006 was a phenomenal year when the Broncos overachieved due to a perfectly timed white hot form streak despite the culture of the club already being in decline and Bennett already wanting to leave. I see it as more of a last hurrah of the empire, when all or most of our most valuable players were at the back end of their careers (e.g. Shane Webcke who retired straight after the GF) and the effort to replace them befitting our great club was not being made, because Bennett had been hamstrung by dodgy management. And yes, it was another premiership victory under Bennett. So your point is?

I guess there is one thing in the original post I am not quite prepared to agree with which is the alleged incompetence of Ivan. He did do a pretty reasonable job last year top get us to where we got, given the talent available. ATM we have got more injuries than you can poke a stick at, so let's see how he does when everyone's back. But things like the 56-0 vs Canberra - they would not have happened with Wayne in charge.

Nah mate, its tough... Alfie is a one off, Matty B, Preston --> It's really tough in school because you can't hide the smaller kids in D... I played sneaker hooker (PJ Marsh style) for a bit but then the Poly kids just grow past year 9 into massive blokes... Just hard to get junior rep starts when you are a small bloke unless you are an absolute gun and teams won't carry more than 1 or 2 (max) matty bowen sized kids in the team...

Under W.B

2007 - Storm - 40-0
2007 - Eels - 68-22
2005 - Storm - 50-0
2001 - Knights - 44-0
1999 - Storm - 48-6

Wayne had some shockers as well mate. Every coach will have some at one point or another.
