I meant to post this here but posted in Start a Conversation, sorry about that.

Thought some posters might find this an interesting topic. I had just started playing in the junior competition for Wynnum Manly when Norths coach Bob Bax (one of Waynes early mentors) pulled this rabbit out of his arse, our coach at the time wanted to know if anyone could kick a field goal, thats how much attention it had at the time.

I have attached an article from the Trove Library about it, hope it worked.

I heard on the ABC radio on the week end talk about 2 point field goals .
They said Bob Fulton won a lot of games with field goals .

The drop kick has died out in Aussie Rules these days . It was a way to hit a flat low pass once upon . And can actually get more distance than a drop punt . Think about some of the freakishly long deep outs we have seen .

Alfie caused two rule changes .
The ball strip . After he pilfered the ball from Glen Lazarus in Origin and the hands 1st rule when tackling / tripping / judo throwing monstrous sized men . LOL .

A big difference these days is the field goal still counts if it`s touched in flight .

How many times has that actually happened....and the games been won?

To add on this at least from what I can add in my life time watching the game, it's Lockyer with the Ball playing Fullback, as a natural Half being converted to Fullback through Bennett he is the one that brought the Fullback into what we expect in the modern game with the half like ball playing, heck when he was playing Fullback he was the Primary kicker for many years at the Broncos and Queensland(specifically in the early 2000s), while many aspects of his game has been emulated by the likes of Billy Slater his Elite Halfback level of kicking hasn't been matched from Fullback since, soo many players have been moved to 6 to try and be the next Locky only to fail badly, Munster is the only exception but Munster is still more of a ball runner then a dominant playmaker like him.

I’d love to see stats on how many channel 9 games are currently muted. That commentator has bought change for me, although I have Kayo, I just cannot watch a 9 game with the sound on. He just shouts EVERYTHING.

And the shouting and "passion" just sounds so fake too. 9 should just hire one of the many great radio callers.

don't let any current RL journo hear that, as far as they are all concerned it was Slater that reinvented fullback play by adding ball playing to the mix. Makes my blood boil every time I hear it.

Rugba league players have little idea how to smother a kick .
Arms up is #1 ,#2 then attack the kicker on his kicking leg . ie if he`s right footed go to that side . The have to drop the ball on that side .

I see attempts at charge downs that ignore the details and don`t get anywhere near the kick .

Walsh did one of the best charge downs last week since Steve Price was still playing .

Darren played AFL as a kid .
Part of the reason he was so good at intercepts and pouncing on loose ball .

In AFL the ball and getting your hands on it is the goal . I see plenty of times in RL matches when the ball is in dispute , neither team has possession but the players don`t have the skills or instincts to take possession . Darren did it consistently during his career .

2 Things since I've been watching (Since 2000):

1) Bellamy and the Storm: Their insidious, concerted effort to bend the rules both off the field with a second set of books and on the field with their grubby wrestling tactics to slow down the play the ball, muddy the ruck, tangle up players on the ground, manipulate the referee and outright injure the ball carriers transformed the game for the worse and it's never recovered

2) V'Landys: Ushered in an era of ridiculous, unnecessary and convoluted rules which have turned the game into an absolute mess to referee properly and yet simultaneously given referees total discretionary control to decide games / swing momentum with '6 again' calls which go completely unscrutinised, unrecorded and even diehard fans can't fathom why they're called. Combine these rules with absolutely pathetic over-refereeing where even accidental or light, harmless contact (or even hard legal hits) are met with soft, game-ruining sin bins / penalties which encourage players to stay down and milk like soccer, and the game has never been in a worse position.

The goal most times in Rugba Leeg isn't to smother the ball, it's to pressure the kicker in to a poor kick.

Chargedowns for the most part are a low percentage play. At best you get a miracle deflection and can scoop it up and run the length. Or at least hope for a friendly deflection and get possession in a good part of the field. But you're just as likely to gift the opposition a repeat set and put yourself under massive pressure.

Pressuring enough to force a poor kick is a positive in 90% of cases.
