Things That Brought About Change in Rugby League

Short drop outs and kick offs need a nerf. Maybe 20M+
Yeah I was thinking about this the other night. I don't enjoy watching teams scrap for the ball at an imaginary 10m plain. I do enjoy watching teams kick behind the goal line and compete that way. If teams keep doing short kickoffs we'll see less and less kicks behind the line.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet but I can 100% see a rule change be introduced to discourage short dropouts
I don't really see an issue with the short drop outs.

One thing I would say is that the ref absolutely has to be sure the kick is taken from where it is meant to be taken from.

I haven't been paying too much attention, but if a team is going for the short drop out and kicks it from in front of the line (because it gives a better angle around the posts and pads) or doesn't drop it in the centre of the goal posts (put a line there same as 20m tap) then they should be penalised straight away.

As I said I haven't been watching too much to check if players are kicking from in front of the line, like they used to with long drop outs, but you can increase the risk if you want to get the reward.

I wouldn’t hate if the defending team could touch the ball before the 10m line. That would make it interesting but would discourage the short drop out I guess.

Defending team will just drop kick it a foot ahead of themselves and dive on it regaining possession

I know what you were going for but I think that is too easy an out anyway

The short drop out is like the 3 pointer in Basketball, once people worked out the maths that it is much more worth going for it your just going to see it being spammed more and more(because the long drop kick will still result in them being on your line within a few tackles if there is no mistake anyway plus the added fatigue of extra running to defensive line).

I think because it's off the back of a mistake it does feel cheap in comparison and overtime it's only going to get easier for the kicking side as it gets more ingrained how to do it as players train for it well before first grade, because the other team can't get the same amount of players to the area being kicked as they still have to cover other parts of the field incase they go for a long kick to bounce out for a scrum.

Agree 100%, I think 20m is a more appropriate target.

Could just change the drop out to a reverse 20m tap

I'm not sure on that because I feel it could result in very lopsided possession, but it's hard to tell what would happen unless the rule got changed. Like the ball having to reach 20 meters on the other hand does allow the receiving team to be more compact as there is less ground to cover which could even it up quite a bit, but there is already quite a few kickers that could do it at that now and with extra running room the Jump at speed vs the standing jump tends to win.

I meant the team defending the kick, receiving it mr in other words. I phrased it badly.

I have a better idea, Corey.

If a team wins, they get the odds that are being offered for that team to win in points. So if the Tigers are playing the Panthers, the odds would be something like $12 for the tigers and $1.03 for the panthers. If the tigers win, they get 12 points. If the panthers win, they get 1.03 points. And if the team is winning at half time but loses, they get a bonus bet to put on another match and if they can correctly select the winner of that match, they also get those points as well.

I'm going to put it to PVL. He is keen to grow the gambling dollar. Think of the opportunities to get a bookmaker on board to sponsor the idea.

Oh right yeah I get ya

I agree - it’s kind of weird that it’s even a penalty as the attacking team has the advantage.

Perhaps it can be a choice. Take the two or tap and go
