Tuivasa-Scheck out for the season

Re: 2016 Injury Discussion Thread

wow

Ouch. 800k sitting on the sideline for the year. That's gotta hurt.

Cant believe he tried to play on with it. Probably made it worse. Massive blow for the warriors. They will now have to shift Lolohea back to fullback. The could sign Kevin Locke back though (he is actively looking for another club)

They'll play better without him.

Big loss, both for them and the fans.

I'm guessing this means Lolohea to FB and Leuleuai (sp?). Not a bad fall back in all honesty.

The cynic in me thinks they wouldn't have made the finals with him anyway....

Really sucks for the Warriors. One day we might see him and Johnson combine.

Unfortunately it gives the rest of the squad an "out". Instead of focusing on why they've been so shit while having a top 4 squad, they'll write any further bad performances off as simply missing a star recruit.

I said a while back that my kiwi mates and workmates all say the same thing - that they're too laid back. The new guy, Bill ("Bull"... from Whakatane no less) used to play lower grades over there and says exactly the same thing. The last time I mentioned it here the response by most was "why are the All Blacks so professional and dominant?". Perhaps that is the answer itself? Those with the mental toughness grind it out in search of fulfilling their Rugby dreams, while the similarly talented yet mentally softer players are content to play backyard footy in the form of the nation's second-best football code?

I have a bad feeling about all this for him. So many players fail to recover from ACLs, especially ones like RTS who don't have anything except their step going for them.

If memory serves that was me Morkel and the conversation was a tad different. Still, I think you're onto something here. Without ever setting foot in New Zealand, let alone examining their junior development programs, from the outside looking in it seems like an administration problem. While the National Youth Competition has benefited them greatly, I believe there's plenty of room for improvement and a lot of these players aren't learning the essentials. So what you get is these fantastic athletes, but only so-so footy players. So a lot of the better players generally come up through the Australian system.

Here's the team that beat Australia last year in the ANZAC Test.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck
Jason Nightingale
Shaun Kenny-Dowall
Peta Hiku
Manu Vatuvei

Kieran Foran
Shaun Johnson
Jesse Bromwich
Issac Luke
Ben Matulino
Tohu Harris
Kevin Proctor
Simon Mannering

Thomas Leuluai
Martin Taupau
Sam Moa
Greg Eastwood

Bold are the players that came up through the Warriors system, the rest were generally plucked out of New Zealand in their early to mid teens and spent their formative years playing either in the Queensland or New South Wales juniors. There's even a few of them who never played any New Zealand Rugby League but happened to qualify for other reasons.

Only 6/17 and let's be honest as well, as talented as Vatuvei, Johnson and Matulino are they often exhibit the tendencies that we're criticising. Soft options, style > substance, all or nothing, attack first footy.

The point I'm trying to make here is that I don't know if it's the players that are necessarily to blame. I don't believe they're educated properly and NZRL doesn't have the infrastructure to compensate the needs of these players. Further, the Warriors poor history off the field has prevented them from being all they can be.

Maybe I'm being too harsh or unrealistic but I'm a big believer that you've got to have great administration if you want to be a successful side. Reading Tate's book opened my eyes up to the Warriors. The picture he painted made them sound like a semi-pro team and even in contrast to the Cowboys they weren't even at the same level. If the Warriors could sort themselves out, take proper care of their players we could have a thriving market over there. Unfortunately the continue to fumble and we're left with this sleeping giant that refuses to wake up.

As for RTS - I hate it whenever a team loses a player for the season. It's terrible news and it's even worse when that player is so valuable to them. In saying that, I agree with Rally Towel when he says that they have a ready made replacement in Lolohea. He's got experience back there and they looked a lot more cohesive with him there than they ever did before. I think he can really find his feet in that position before making way ala Morgan and fingers crossed RTS can develop a passing game to compensate for the speed and mobility he's sure to lose.

I'm praying that RTS doesn't get fucked up by this. He was an absolute joy to watch for the Roosters and was becoming one of my favorite players to watch. The Warriors must be the most frustrating team in Rugby League to cheer for. So much talent each year but they do nothing with it.

Devastating news for RTS, I hate it when any player suffers a serious injury, especially ACL because there is always that doubt about how much they will lose when they come back.

As has been said, for the Warriors they are fortunate to have a guy like Lolohea to move to fullback. I really rate the guy and the Warriors look so much better when he is closer to the action. It is unbelievable that he has been on the wing for most of the season.

I can't think of many in the modern era who have come back considerably worse after an ACL injury, Achilles is a different story because that affects how you run and jump. The only one I can think of is Derrick Rose in the NBA, but the only reason he was never the same player again was because he did an ACL and then just after he came back he did an MCL, he's had nothing but issues since.

ACL really isn't a massive injury anymore, in terms of longevity of a career, he'll come back start of next season and be ready to roll.

My concern isn't the repair job on his knee, it's the fact that the Warriors never tend to have the coaching staff to get the most out of a player, so how are they going to get this kid confident in actually using his knee again.
