WA Reds have received a unanimous endorsement from the 16 NRL clubs to join the competition in 2013.

The non-binding vote of confidence at a recent NRL conference in Byron Bay offers a massive injection of confidence as the West Australian Rugby League plans to present its bid in March or April.

WARL chief executive John Sackson says a new WA team, which would play out of nib Stadium, would have the corporate and crowd support to succeed long term, unlike the Western Reds franchise that operated at the WACA from 1995-97.

The NRL is likely to expand the competition to 18 teams in 2013 with Perth a leading contender, along with Rockhampton in Central Queensland, Logan or Ipswich south of Brisbane, and Gosford on the NSW Central Coast.

The WARL believes three key selling points, the $82.5 million State Government-backed redevelopment of the eastern grandstand at nib Stadium, WA's booming economy and the WA TV time zone, will be key to the success of the bid.

"David Gallop (the NRL CEO) has already given the stadium a big tick, the players like coming here, the coaches like coming here," WARL chief executive John Sackson said.

"We have a booming economy and the infrastructure that comes with a capital city such as Perth with its strong corporate support.

"We have a proud rugby league heritage. Look at the Western Reds, who played at the WACA which was not an ideal ground by any means to watch rugby league and they attracted average crowds of 16,500 per game.

"Perth is tailor made for games being televised back into the eastern states because of our time zone.

"To have the support of clubs, the CEOs and the chairmen of the existing clubs, for them to vote unanimously for Perth as a destination for expansion is a very positive statement."

The WARL would need at least 18 months to build a team but is well on the way to building a $15 million annual budget to run an NRL franchise.

"Our plan is to present to the NRL's new independent commission in March-April next year so in the meantime we will be proactive and build a sustainable, robust, irresistible business plan that hopefully gets us over the line."

Meanwhile, David Hobbs has been elected chairman of the WARL board.

Hobbs, CEO of the Professionals Group WA & NT, is no stranger to setting up clubs.

He was with the Fremantle Dockers from inception, helping to set up its marketing and sponsorship arm. Hobbs replaces Terry Creasey who stepped down because of business commitments.

We don't need 17 teams FFS!

They need to merge two Sydney teams and create a new franchise in Perth to make 16 if they do want to venture out there.

You misread. THey want 18 teams.

But yeah, some of the Sydney teams need to go.

I would like to see another team over there and one more QLD team. But please don't call yourselves W.A reds. Perth something or others. Pirates would be cool ahhh harrrr. Mechandice would be rad.

I reckon a Perth team and another QLD team plus a Sydney team being cut for central coast or a relocation to the central coast.

You're all nuts. None of those area's have enough league following to become successful.

Perth has a very strong local league actually. Adelaide wouldn't work. Nobody there cares.

And none will if some kind of push isn't made it those areas.

As for Adelaide, there's probably not enough interest here to warrant it but it's far from nobody.

I have lived in Adelaide my entire life and I am league through and through. Half of my friends would rather watch league than gAyFL.

The truth is quite simple really. It's about the philosophy of expansion. Do you pop another team in an area that is already league mad, or do you try and gain ground ain a new area?

I don't claim to have the answer, just saying it's a decision to be made. If you want to go to a new area like Adelaide you have to be prepared to put a bucket of money into junior and school programs and reap a benefit of that years down the track.

My 11yo son is league mad and cannot stand AFL, but his school doesn't have an Oztag program or even Touch. So he is playing soccer. If oztag was an option in his school, he'd be there.

I think if they add two teams in the near future they will be a Perth team plus either NSW Central Coast or Qld Central Coast (Rockhampton). One expansion area plus one heartland area.

^^^^ This

When the AFL expanded firstly into Sydney and then into Queensland, it was them going into non-traditional areas and spent a lot of time and money doing it right. They knew they would take a massive hit for quite some time (and in Qld they needed to move up the highway) but because they didn't just go "oh not enough interest, too hard", but took the risk, were patient and did it properly, they are not reaping the rewards in both Sydney and SEQ - so much so they are now putting second teams in those areas.

But I don't just agree with expansion, I truly believe that some Sydney teams to have to go to make way for the new teams.

I think the Reds are a moral and academic favourite.

They belong in the NRL and they will deliver two great TV windows for the rest of the fans of Rugby League offering LIVE NRL at 9:30pm Friday and Saturdays.

They also do have a solid Rugby League base and never deserved to be eliminated.

I am totally behind the Reds and I fully intend on purchasing a WA Reds 11/12 Membership for $55.00

The Reds bid - including the building of support, members and sponsors - in a town where Rugby League isn't a premier spectator sport has been nothing short of amazing. All things considered, their efforts are getting up there with the GC bid, in my opinion. If any AFL mad area was ever going to be a chance to take to League to an acceptable and viable level, it was always going to be Perth.

I think Adelaide, however, is one of those places that shouldn't be brought up for consideration until the sport can afford it - ie. like the AFL's attempts in Western Sydney and the GC. I see it as one of those 'dots on the map' places for way down the track, if ever. As far as generating more income and long-term growth for the game though, I'd say that there are a number of better expansion (and consolidation) options in the short-medium term.

It would be great to have a team there though, make no mistake. One day in the future, TV Rights might play in their favour, even if the game gets pretty much bugger all viewers there. The AFL ratings are currently abysmal in NSW and Qld, but just having exposure to major markets is enough for TV execs and advertisers to hand over the cash. Adelaide is about the 6th or 7th largest TV market, but who knows, it may help bring in good coin at some point (far) down the track.

I agree with your post Major :)

Adelaide won't make money for the NRL - it will cost the NRL money for several years until it builds the supporter base

So the NRL can't move into Adelaide until the NRL has the money to support it

If Adelaide is on the long term radar (which it may not be) until a team can be placed here, the NRL must show Adelaide fans they care about us by staging at least 1 game here each season. This will also help in promotion of the code and also build a small supporter base, particularly if 1 team calls Adelaide a 'second home' much like Hawthorn and Tasmania

The home team might lose some gate takings but the NRL could compensate them - depending on the fixture it may not be very much anyway

Adelaide has been getting a match here and there over the past few years and has managed around 10,000 people which is not that far off some of the Sydney crowds anyway

The NRL needs to take a different approach I think

A two league (24 teams) two tier competition, like premier league and first division, I think could work very well for the NRL. Relegation (punishes poor performing and poorly supported teams) and promotion (encourages performing teams), no salary cap. Super League had the right idea.

That plus introducing an FA Cup style knockout comp during the State of Origin rounds would be revolutionary, allow weaker teams to win some trophy wear and money.

Current leagues would look like this:

Premier:

St George
Penrith
West Tigers
Gold Coast Titans
Sydney Roosters
Canberra Raiders
New Zealand Warriors
Manly Sea Eagles
Brisbane Broncos
Newcastle Knights
South Sydney
Parramatta Eels

First Division:
Melbourne Storm
North Queensland Cowboys
Cronulla Sharks
Canterbury Bulldogs
*Newtown Jets
*North Sydney Bears
*Central Queensland Comets
*Wests Magpies
*NSW Central Coast
*Redcliffe Dolphins
*Perth
*PNG

Full home and away season.

Tell me who would not be psyched by a comp like this and or a FA Cup style competition (which elminates the whinging about State of Origin weeks being essentially dead rubbers - they'd be huge in a two tier comp and would compliment the mid-week State of Origin with a weekend show case event).

Yes it's great.

No it won't ever happen.

This. Although I don't think it'd be great. You'd have shit all talent in the lower tier. It'd be like QLD Cup standard. And the FA Cup style games would be an annihilation.
