OFFICIAL Walsh signs with the Broncos until 2025

I wonder why there is bad blood then? Warriors were playing out of their stadium and were using the QCUP side as a feeder team.

Wayne getting into some of their player's ears?

I love Herbie but if he wants to chase the money to sit at the bottom of the table with uncle Wayne in a couple of years, then so be it.
I can’t see that being the outcome though. He knows what the club is building, he can see the direction we are heading.

I’d say we will release/not re-sign:
Niu, Hoeter, James, Kelly, Mead, Kennedy, Lee, Arthars & Turpin. I dare say this also means Payne won’t be here long term.
I’d be shocked if Walsh cost us more then 500k, which is probably about right. Had he hit the open market I’d say he’d be fetching 700-900k (depending on the desperate clubs out there).

Brisbane teams of old had the majority of their cap in the backline.

Then you fill out the rest with the Hohns, the Canns and the Gees of this world.

Looks like we may be replicating that model again...

Signing Reece Walsh gives us options. Having options like this can’t be a bad thing for our team as we are building.

I have every faith in our leadership group to get this right.

I've noted some are saying we would have a plan. Well I believe we’ve had a plan since the day Ben Ikin arrived and it all appears to be working Just fine. If Reece signs this will be no different.

Considering Herbie has made it fairly clear he wants a shot at fullback i wouldnt be surprised if we do get Walsh we let Herbie out of his contract for 2023. I reckon he only signed on the premise he got a shot at the 1 shirt.
Circumstances change. Didn't Kotoni sign on with the premise that he got a shot at five eighth?

The hard truth is we don’t really need another fullback. Unless the club thinks Herbie isn’t up to it, and they have other plans for Selwyn.

anyone able to break down badels story thismorning walsh agreeing to terms and how we made the cap space?
or is it a follow on from yesterday?

We just cant afford Cobbo, Staggs, Walsh and Farnworth imo.

If Herbie could be convinced to stay at centre, and we could ship him out without paying any portion of his contract, I'd prefer we move Staggs on. That gives us Walsh at the back, Cobbo and Herbie in the centres, and Mam at six while we still have Reyno. It's hard to plan any further than that at this stage, but Walsh to the halves seems a fair option.

The hard truth is we don’t really need another fullback. Unless the club thinks Herbie isn’t up to it, and they have other plans for Selwyn.

We have Niu lining up in the one this week. Martin, while he's been great, has recently shown some deficiencies at the back and is no guarantee to be here next year. Neither Farnworth or Cobbo are proven fullbacks. Regardless of the club's thoughts or plans before this, I think Walsh becoming an option is way too good of an opportunity to pass up, and you just make it work with the other pieces you have. The truth doesn't seem that hard to me.

Byline is Peter Badel, Michael Carayannis and Brent Read. It's a bit cobbled together, but has some new information from last night. Notably this:

"Reece Walsh is officially a Bronco with Brisbane having freed up more than $1 million in the salary cap to bring the Warriors whizkid home to Queensland. News Corp can reveal Walsh has inked a deal with the Broncos in a bombshell development that will see the 19-year-old reject a massive $2.8 million offer from Brisbane’s expansion rivals the Dolphins to return to Red Hill next season. It is understood Walsh has agreed terms on a three-year deal until the end of 2025."
And this:
"The Dolphins were prepared to offer Walsh a four-year deal worth $700,000 annually, but the teenager has only been given permission to negotiate with the Broncos as part of his release request. News Corp understands the Broncos will sign Walsh to a two or three-year deal. It will not exceed the value of his existing Warriors contract, which is worth around $400,000 a season."
The previous iteration was more speculative. Says cash will come from releasing Ryan James ($180,000), David Mead ($120,000), Jake Turpin ($300,000), Brenko Lee ($200,000) Rhys Kennedy ($150,000) and Jamayne Isaako ($200,000). Plus Te Maire Martin ($60,000), Albert Kelly ($80,000) and Corey Oates ($500,000) are also coming off contract. No mention of Billy.

Warriors head of football Craig Hodges:

“Reece came to us about a month ago and said he couldn’t commit to coming back to New Zealand. Reece has had a relationship breakdown and he has a young daughter and he said he simply couldn’t be away from her in another country. We totally understood that so we said what do you want to do and he said, ‘I would like to go to the Broncos’."
“On that basis, we said OK you can negotiate only with the Broncos, we didn’t want to turn it into a circus with Reece talking with all sorts of clubs and ending up going to a Sydney team. We wish him all the best. He is a great young kid who is putting his family first.”
Unnamed Warriors source:

“Reece asked for a release a few weeks ago. He has said he is homesick. He has recently separated from his partner and he wants to remain in Brisbane to be close to his young daughter. Deep down he would love to go back to the Broncos but I don’t know if Brisbane can afford him. The Dolphins are also an option for Reece but I think his preference is to go to the Broncos. We haven’t given him a release yet but I believe it will happen in the next few days.”

Walsh, recently:

“I never thought I would leave the Broncos. It was a dream of mine to play NRL for Brisbane. I remember when I was seven years old, I would run around with a Broncos jersey on wishing I could play for the Broncos. That’s something I always wanted to do.”

Walsh, last week:

“I enjoyed my time at the Broncos. I came through there and I was only in the NRL system for a couple of months. I made a lot of good friendships there and I’m in camp now with Corey Oates, Tom Flegler and Pat Carrigan. I have a lot of good mates there and I’m happy the Broncos are going well. Right now, I am focused on the Warriors ... they have been good to me.”

If TMM is staying with us next season I'd like to see him move into the 6 (I think @Wolfie also suggested this last night). Te Maire is far more comfortable at 6 and it would allow him to share the spot with Ezra while Ezra learns his trade. Make Ezra the 14 and there will be occasional games where Te Maire needs to sit out a few games with injury where Ezra can slot straight in.

This also allows Cobbs another year to develop his game on the wing and if Herbie decides to go after next season it will be the ideal spot for Cobbs to progress to with his right hand fend.

With Paix another year into his own development our spine will be beginning to look like a proper premiership side. And we might even see a few games from Mozer towards the end of next season to further add to our depth.

If Haas can't see this as a bona fide winning spine and still leaves we will know for sure that $BW and Nasser have once again did the dirty work for uncle Nick. The way Haas has behaved in the media I'm not bothered if he ends up going, however, I think a fit Haas would make winning a premiership a bit easier.

The million that was "freed up" is coming from Hoeter,Niu, Turpin, Mead, Lee, James, Kennedy and the last residual of Lodge and TPJ I take it?
Oh forgot the poorly coached Isaako's wages too.

“It’s not fair on my teammates or the club that they think I am wanting to go elsewhere,” Walsh told Fox Sports. “It’s not the case – we haven’t spoken to any other clubs, I have a contract in place which means I am 100% going to New Zealand next year.”

“At first I sort of laughed about it and would ask the boys, where do you think they get this information from because it definitely isn’t coming from me or my management or my family.
“After a while it became too much, there were questions from my teammates.

“It’s got to the point where it’s worth addressing because it’s spiralling out of control,” Walsh told Fox Sports.

Warriors released an official statement 30 minutes ago.

George also confirmed incumbent fullback Walsh, who is contracted for 2023 with an option for 2024, had indicated his wish to stay in Australia.

“There has been a major change in Reece’s personal circumstances in the past two months which have impacted on his ability to move to Auckland with the club next season,” he said.

“We’re working through his situation and have given him permission, with some conditions, to look at options in Brisbane. It’s not the way either Reece or the club had wanted this to play out but we respect the issues he has.”

I'm still not sold on Dearden. That cows pack is making Townsend look like a worldbeater atm.
What spine is currently better than the Cowboys?

Penrith is.....and Melbourne...

After that....?

Dearden is certainly part of their success this year.
