Should Wayne Bennett's Contract be Extended?

Well here is my take.....

IMO Siebold has verbally agreed to take over the Broncos 2020 but has not signed anything. The reason for delay till October is that Siebold wants to keep his Rabbits squad on track and has said he will not sign or announce anything until the end of the season.

I am also assuming that at seasons end there will be an attempt/discussion with the Rabbits about Siebold breaking his contract to coach the Broncos starting 2019. It will then be up to the Rabbits whether they would push ahead and hold Siebold to his contract in 2019 knowing that he is leaving the 2020 or just let him move on/come to some financial arrangement with the Broncos.

The Broncos board are covering their bases and waiting on what unfolds in October, if Siebold is released by Souths for 2019 then Wayne is gone and paid out, if not then the board let Wayne finish his contract in 2019 and Siebold takes over 2020.

The board I assume are keeping Wayne's contract in their option just incase the Siebold release for 2019 does not work out or for some reason Siebold has a change of mind.

I also think if Siebold doesn't come till 2020 and Wayne walks then Demetriou will be in charge for the 12 months.

Exactly.

And in my opinion, not a bad scenario for us to be in.

A most here, i am a Wayne fan, but i do think it is time for a change.

A change is not always good , but eventually going to happen with Wayne's age.
I just really hate how this has gone down, the deserves a bit more respect. He made this club and deserves a better send off.

Seibold has proven nothing so far. He hasn't won a premiership in the NRL and we aren't a mediocre Sydney club who just signs any coach available who has minor success. We're the Broncos, we're an enormously large brand and winning is in our DNA, we haven't won a comp in over a decade and this needs to change. Is seibold our guy? I really don't know, he hasn't won anything, he hasn't proven he can get the job done and until he does all that, I'll remain undecided but the problem is, there is nobody proven out there that can coach us other than Wayne. Bellamy is the only other guy proven who can get the job done but he isn't coming so he's left? The only way to go is to get a coach, like seibold, whos unproven and just hope he is the man to take us to the glory land consistently over the next 10-15 years. Give him all the resources he needs, give him whatever he needs to coach the team and see how we go. If it's true and we are getting seibold next year or in 2020, then i'm hoping he wins the comp and can prove to us that he knows what he's doing and can take a club like Souths who have been mediocre and turn them around and be successful.

So is Siebold friends with White? If so that is adds even more weight to Siebold coming IMO.

That makes way to much sense for our club though.

If any other coach had have been in charge of the season we are currently having, then BHQ would overwhelmingly be in favour of looking elsewhere ...

Im just saying

A lot of clubs would kill to be 12-9 at this stage of the season. A poor +/- and a big divide between the top 9 and bottom 7 makes the season look a lot worse than it normally would. Two stars in Gillette and Bird have been out for most of the year, the youngest pack in the comp and the worst HB going around. There isn't a coach in the world (except one) who would keep their side above water under these circumstances. Bennett has done a wonderful job this season and it isn't finished yet.

I'm not saying many other clubs wouldn't be thrilled to have a record we have had this year to date ...

what i am saying, is that this club and this forum expect more than scraping into the 8 (assuming we even do) ...

the fans of this club have never accepted scraping into the 8, hell we could even miss it this year. and if another coach missed the 8, then a very large portion of this forum would be calling for him to be burned at the stake.

Wayne Bennett was only 38 and hadn't coached in the Sydney comp when the Broncos appointed him. He had a similar resume to a lot of these "rookie" coaches and it took him 5 years to finally win one. I'm just pointing out that going after someone like Siebold isn't necessarily foolish because "he hasn't proven himself yet".

I am in that grey area where I love Wayne Bennett, he deserves all the respect in the world and needs to be treated as such by the club he built.....but he's old AF and we need to make moves to shore up our future. Just wish the club would address the media rather than letting this petty stuff be repeated.

If the players love Wayne as much as they are insinuating, then they need to go out and freaking WIN.

Exactly my thoughts. We dunno if our next coach, doesnt matter who it is, is the next Wayne Bennett or not till he has a go.
Also, Bennett, or any coach for that matter, could be great with one team and not so much with another. Depending on personalities

Ok. That didnt work. Supposed to quote Mrs Long

Actually that isn't true, Bennett was co-coach at the Raiders with Don Furner which the Raiders made the Grand Final in 1987 and he had extensive experience in the Brisbane competition that may not have been at the NSWRL level wasn't far off either. Jack Gibson the original coach the Broncos wanted recommended Bennett as the man they needed.

It may have taken the Broncos 5 years from entry into the NSWRL competition to win a premiership, but your talking about building a new franchise(something most coaches don't go into), introducing a lot of players into a competition standard they would have to adjust to and haven't necessarily played together at club level (there are exceptions there too)as well as developing youngsters. Their achievements prior to 1992 weren't exactly poor either(not that I am saying you said they were). They narrowly missed the finals in 1988, won the panasonic cup and made a play off for a spot in the finals in 1989. Finished 2nd in 1990 on the ladder and were one win away from the Grand Final(considering the Wally drama this was quite an achievement). Inconsistency in 1991 cost them a finals appearance but it was clear they were on their way to a premiership in the following season or two then, they did manage to win the Lotto Cup

I'm old enough to remember all of that. If BHQ was around back then we'd have people saying: "Wayne Bennett has not won a premiership on his own; he didn't win one in the Sydney rugby league, only in Brisbane" Is my point, re saying Seibold, JD, Walters, or whoever else is in the mix shouldn't be considered.

That's just the thing though, this isn't any other coach. This is Wayne Bennett. The guy who helped build the Broncos and a coach widely regarded as the GOAT.

Edit: And to clarify, I'm not against them moving him on......after his contract is finalised and with a coach already lined up.
