I'd like to see these changes put in:
1) No clock killing as Pete said. Time out for all stoppages. Use that time to go to commercials (yes, I'm sure it will suck at times for viewers, but it will be great for increasing the value of TV rights. And you wont miss any action. The NFL do it just fine.)
2) No competing timeslot games. It should be possible to see EVERY game live, without having to make a choice. So:
+ Only 1x Friday Night Game. Unless you have a game in Perth, in which case play that at 7:30pm WA time and have 2 live Friday games.
+ Only 1x Saturday 7:30pm game. Move the 2nd game to Saturday afternoon.
+ No 2pm and 3pm Sunday Kick-off. Move the 3pm kick-off to 4pm and have it live on 9.
+ Move the 2nd Friday game to Sunday Night. Sunday Night football would be a HUGE hit. Maybe not so great for the crowds but no worse than a Monday game. And it would be great for broadcasters IMO.
3) No video referee interference for reportable offences in the tackle/ruck. I hate when people get hit high and stay down. I would allow it to be used for other offences though, like in fights and stuff. If a guy king hits someone, the video ref should still be allowed to intervene.
4) Stop calling held when a player gets lifted in the air. Stupid rule that is over policed. Good, strong defence shouldn't be punished.
5) Origin to be held over 3 consecutive weeks, on either Wednesday or the weekend. On those same weekends, I would schedule three tests between New Zealand and England. And also a Carling Cup style club cup, with each team forced to use half their U20 squad, and the rest from first team, so that those teams with big rep commitments aren't punished, and so U20 players can get a taste of a higher level.
6) National reserve comp (as Pete said)
7) One club players in the game for more than 5 years to have a $150,000 cap exemption. For EACH player who meets the criteria.
8) No mid season International games involving Australia. In fact, I would only ever have Australia play internationals in the World Cup (Four Nations is a joke). Australia playing in anything but a World Cup = Australia 100% wins = stupid, pointless exercise.
9) Perth team MUST be next. I repeat, Perth team MUST be next. Next team? MUST be Perth.
Perth is a large marketplace, there seems to be good corporate $$$ that can be had and it would be SENSATIONAL for broadcasters. Perth is 2 hours behind. You could have 7:30pm WA time games play as live 9:30pm games for Friday night. Or 5:30 Sunday arvo games play as 7:30 Sunday night games etc.
I talk a lot of shit about broadcasters, but IMO, any growth and prosperity of the game simply has to come from increased $$$, so increasing the game's appeal to sponsors and broadcast rights bidders is absolutely pivotal.
I think that's it for now, but I'm sure I would think of more things later.
