1. Refs calling players by their name or nicknames. Go back to them calling them by their number.
2. Get rid of Golden Point. (a draw is a result)

If they have to go into extra time (a Semi Final etc), then make it 5 mins each half.

If a team scores within a min, extra time continues for another 9 mins etc.

Agree on golden point. Only finals (both domestic and international) should have some form of extra time. Personally, I'd just have it 10 minutes ONE WAY but if you have to have both, then make it Two ways. 5 minutes doesn't allow for any meaningful attack to be mounted.

Other changes...

1. Benefit of the Doubt to the defensive side. Need to improve beyond a shadow of a doubt the defensive side has conceded a try.

2. Take away the kick for touch off penalties. Make them either a kick for touch or quick tap and allow the quick tap to be taken asap.

3. Little markers on the 20 metre line so refs. can judge 40/20s better.

4. No more running out the clock. Kick for touch, tries, conversions all that - if there is a stoppage in play, it's a time out. Not only does that give us more footy but it also gives advertisers time to shill their stuff, allowing the game to rake in the dough.

5. National reserve competition. U20s shouldn't lead us into the football, a proper reserve competition filled with affiliate clubs should. Too many clubs are relying on their Toyota Cup talent and it's beginning to affect the standard of the competition. By having a reserve grade side, you can at least call on a player who's fully grown and has all the right experiences.

6. 20s will still be kept, but they'll play mid-weeks at smaller & country venues. This makes Rugby League completely a weekly game.

7. Stand alone Origin weekends. No more rep. affected weekends, just give us Origin and maybe even do them three weeks back to back

8. Less night games, more days games. No more regular Friday double headers.

9. Speaking of double headers, more of them in Sydney, especially with out of town teams like North Queensland, Gold Coast and stuff who can't attract big crowds.

That's it for now.

Big Pete, I've been wanting your No.4 to happen for a loooonnnggg time.
We lose far too much valuable game time for absolute rubbish things like drop out, scrums, goal kicks and the like.

When ever the play is paused for what ever reason the timer should stop otherwise we go the soccer way and add extra time to each half but the first idea is better. Would also help from a revenue perspective as you've mentioned.

I would like to see the double movement rule scrapped

I also really like Big Petes suggestions 4 and 8

Move to a 3 point system so when teams play a draw they get 1 point each and play for the 3rd point during extra time.

Extra time to be golden try and if the team who receives first scores on the first set then the other side gets 1 set with the ball. If no result after 10 mins no team gets the extra point.

Kick off to be optional to either receive it or kick it for the scoring side.

Expand the 40 - 20 concept to any 40 mtr kick gets the feed. It should make teams drop their wingers back and allow some room for long range tries.

The torso try should be scrapped.

Torso try
Golden point (In regular season games)
Stop the clock when there is a stoppage in play

I want the refs to stop telling players when they're offside or not square.

The amount of times I hear a ref call a players name telling them they're offside is ridiculous. If they're offside just penalise, there may be a few extra penalties initially but players will learn pretty quick to stay on side or get square.

1. Get rid of 2 Sydney teams.
2. Reduce interchages
3. Have a genuine reserves competition.
4. Make Golden point games only for finals matches
5. Put more into Grass roots footy
6. Make Origin a stand alone series

I would also love to see the TAB updates removed from the game for good. Munsie is an ugly shit and Rodgers is an annoying stuck up bitch.

I'd like to see these changes put in:

1) No clock killing as Pete said. Time out for all stoppages. Use that time to go to commercials (yes, I'm sure it will suck at times for viewers, but it will be great for increasing the value of TV rights. And you wont miss any action. The NFL do it just fine.)

2) No competing timeslot games. It should be possible to see EVERY game live, without having to make a choice. So:
+ Only 1x Friday Night Game. Unless you have a game in Perth, in which case play that at 7:30pm WA time and have 2 live Friday games.
+ Only 1x Saturday 7:30pm game. Move the 2nd game to Saturday afternoon.
+ No 2pm and 3pm Sunday Kick-off. Move the 3pm kick-off to 4pm and have it live on 9.
+ Move the 2nd Friday game to Sunday Night. Sunday Night football would be a HUGE hit. Maybe not so great for the crowds but no worse than a Monday game. And it would be great for broadcasters IMO.

3) No video referee interference for reportable offences in the tackle/ruck. I hate when people get hit high and stay down. I would allow it to be used for other offences though, like in fights and stuff. If a guy king hits someone, the video ref should still be allowed to intervene.

4) Stop calling held when a player gets lifted in the air. Stupid rule that is over policed. Good, strong defence shouldn't be punished.

5) Origin to be held over 3 consecutive weeks, on either Wednesday or the weekend. On those same weekends, I would schedule three tests between New Zealand and England. And also a Carling Cup style club cup, with each team forced to use half their U20 squad, and the rest from first team, so that those teams with big rep commitments aren't punished, and so U20 players can get a taste of a higher level.

6) National reserve comp (as Pete said)

7) One club players in the game for more than 5 years to have a $150,000 cap exemption. For EACH player who meets the criteria.

8) No mid season International games involving Australia. In fact, I would only ever have Australia play internationals in the World Cup (Four Nations is a joke). Australia playing in anything but a World Cup = Australia 100% wins = stupid, pointless exercise.

9) Perth team MUST be next. I repeat, Perth team MUST be next. Next team? MUST be Perth.

Perth is a large marketplace, there seems to be good corporate $$$ that can be had and it would be SENSATIONAL for broadcasters. Perth is 2 hours behind. You could have 7:30pm WA time games play as live 9:30pm games for Friday night. Or 5:30 Sunday arvo games play as 7:30 Sunday night games etc.

I talk a lot of shit about broadcasters, but IMO, any growth and prosperity of the game simply has to come from increased $$$, so increasing the game's appeal to sponsors and broadcast rights bidders is absolutely pivotal.

I think that's it for now, but I'm sure I would think of more things later.

1- Tries to be awarded when the player is in control of the ball, and by control I don't mean a finger nail or the navel!

2- Origin and the Anzac Test in stand alone weekends, in combination with a Cup competition much in the same mould as Ari included above, but only Reserve (see point 4) and U20 players can participate.

3- Clock stops when the ball is out of play as Big Pete suggests.

4- National Reserve Competition as others stated.

5- Golden Try instead of Golden Point with each team having the right to start at least one set of six.

6- Relocate troubled Sydney teams to real expansion areas such as Perth and New Zealand (not the Central Coast). If they don't want to relocate, take their license and give it to a new team in said areas.

7- Did I say to only award tries if the player is actually controlling the ball?

8- Rocky during Origin:

4 interchanges per match, no more golden point and 5 minutes each way in finals for extra time also I would like the 5 minute bin back.

Hey everyone, I'm new here, found this forum near the beginning of the season and have been checking all the responses since then, but only just got around the signing up this week. Anyway, I though I would begin contributing via this easy-to-answer thread :)

My changes are virtually the same as everybody else.
1. All games broadcasted live
2. Scrap golden point and revert back to draws. However I know this is highly unlikely, so golden try would suffice.
3. No torso tries - they are just absolutely blatent knock-ons
4. I really like the idea of markers on the 20m for easy 40-20 decisions
5. Minimise time wasting by having time-out at stoppages
6. Stand alone Origin and Test Match weeks
7. PNG to be inducted into the NRL at some stage, probably after the next expansion (or probably in about 10 years time). They should enter via the Q-Cup in the next couple of years to ensure development. Having PNG in the NRL does have security and safety implications though, so that would have to be sorted out as well.

Hello and welcome Manifesto!

I like your idea about PNG being introduced through Qcup. That League crazy country definitely deserves to have a team in the NRL eventually, although as you mention, there is the not so imple issue of safety concerns.

I still think that we need to prioritise. Ideally I'd start with Perth and Wellington (if they had a good bid), then Ipswich/Western Corridor / or a North Brisbane/Redcliffe/Sunny Coast franchise.
And as said previously, Sydney teams have to be relocated or fold, as I don't think it would be a good thing for the NRL comp to go beyond 18 teams...

You can't just "get rid of" 2 Sydney teams. That would do more harm than good. You need to let them fend for themselves like any normal business. If they can't survive then they die. If they do survive then fantastic, it'll be great for the game.

Yes you can. Short term pain, long term gain.
