What changes in League would you like to happen.

Along with the obvious time stoppages/torso tries/scrap golden point etc I concur with the calling a penalty a penalty.
For eg. Wes Naiqama on the weekend got 3 chances to get the quick tap right. Just blow a freaking penalty.

But having said that, i would like to see something similar to the AllStars game with minor infringements penalised with a tackle restart then a kick for touch or penalty goal.....

I liked the idea of the no kick for touch, just give another set of six in the All Stars game but the implementation was poor. I think you need a delay still. ie, referee still blows the penalty on the mark, and the attacking team taps and goes.

I'd love to see some of the ideas in this thread become a reality, especially the torso try and the clock stoppage when the ball is dead.

Not sure if its been brought up, but I think the biggest change we need is bringing in differential penalties. I HATE how much a game is effected by a simple "holding down" penalty. In origin, they make or break a match sometimes. Getting a kick for touch off a 50/50 call is horrible. I think, unless it's a penalty for foul play (head high, spear tackle etc) then there should be no kick for touch, but instead a reset of the tackle count and a tap. Easy as that. I hate seeing games decided by the ref thinking someone held down the other team too long when its a 50/50 call at best

Edit: just saw coxy's post mention it, so whoever initially brought it up, i agree!

Yep, the clock stop is great idea, like the AFL do. Also, with points for tries scored from the bomb to be reduced, maybe 3 points for a bomb to the corner for the lottery, might bring back more running footy instead of just kicking to the corner on the last 90% of the time

1. I would like the rulebook to be completely overhauled to be black and white with plenty of sub points discussing scenarios as to stop the back lash like the GI try from Orgin 1 received.

The current rulebook online is very brief in regards to scenarios and explainations with various rulings. If you remember back to the "knock on" thread, depending on which side of fence you sat on. Both sides could argue a case with the rulings being in their favour. Some said common sense needed to be used and well the rules need reflect this common sense to include the scenarios to back it up.

2. I would like to see the trainers no longer allowed on the field unless there is a stoppage in play or a player is injuried, they must only attend to that player and then head straight off again . This isn't mod football, they shouldn't need to be coached around the park like some teams do. If they need a drink while the game is being played, go to the sideline to see the trainer.

3. I would like for refs to declare a time for captains to talk to them. Various captains are going up to the refs to slow down any momentum, to get their defence set and waste time. I still want captains to be able to talk to the refs but instead of being hounded by the captain, the ref can say "next momentum stoppage". So knock on or ball goes out where a scrum should be formed the ref will stop time and call both captains out to discuss situations. Some times it feels like teams get advantages from having a chatty and hounding captain.

4. More day games. Move a Friday night game to Sunday. Have 3 games back to back on Saturday - 3pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm 3 games on Sunday - 2pm, 4pm and 7pm. No Monday night. All games should be live on FTA or Foxtel, no more delayed games.

That is all I can think of at the moment. I agree with some other peoples suggestions but I didn't include them in mine.

I think having a PNG team in the NRL is a massive pipe dream TBH. If we can get PNG producing more players in the NRL then it might be a chance.

Playing talent isn't even the issue. I think if PNG people had a pathway to the NRL we'd see a lot more of them. A country where just about every kid plays the game is bound to produce raw talent, but there's no avenues to refine that talent. An NRL team would provide that, as they work in the grassroots community to improve that development path.

BUT, and it's a huge BUT, in the short term you'd need to entice quality Australian/Kiwi players to move to Port Moresby and play there. That is a MASSIVELY hard sell. And while you'd fill the stadium every week, you'd have to keep ticket prices way down because while the population is footy mad, they're poor.

So yes, it's a pipe dream, for many many reasons.

Totally agree. The political, structural and non football related issues relating to a PNG team are just enormous. And if it fails (not out of the question) then a lot of money invested will have to be written off -- money that I'm sure could be used in other areas.

With that said, if they were to go ahead with a sort of Cup style competition during Origin, as a few have suggested, it would be a great way to get a PNG team playing in that cup. In England (Soccer), the lower division teams get to play in the cups, so if the NRL were to do something similar you could maybe field a PNG team, or a Fijian team, or really a team from any area where expansion is being looked at. (Heck, you could even field QLD Cup and NSW Cup teams if you really wanted to) I think it would be a great trial run and if it were just a cup stint I don't think players would mind so much going to PNG to play one or two games.

yes to clock stop, a gigantic hell no to how the AFL does it though. They leave the clock going, but then do stoppage time. Problem being they don't let anyone know how long there is in the stoppage time. I went to the lions game the other week and the fourth 25 minute quarter went for 38 minutes before the hooter went. By the end of it, for the last 10 minutes basically, everyone was just wondering when the siren was gonna go. It was almost comical how long it went on.

They need to do it NBA style. Ball out of play = clock actually stopped.

Yeah the AFL system is shithouse. You can sit there with the clock counting in the red and have no idea how long the game has left to run. It's pointless.

I'd also get rid of dominant tackles, surrender tackles and all that nonsense. If you have the ball, you're king and you can play it as quickly as you want to. If you take an age to get off, penalty.

Also, all wrestling tactics banned. If there is any unnecessary contact you'll be suspended. I don't care if have the competition is suspended, we're marking that s**t out of the game.

Disagree with the dominant/surrender tackles comment. Good defense should be rewarded by allowing the defensive team to reposition for the play the ball.

As to the wrestling, I have no problem with some of it, but any tactic that tries to maim a player (most come from bellyache's coaching team) needs to be banned and punished.

Fair enough, my issue is that it causes too much confusion and inconsistency. Would rather the tackles speak for themselves then some subjective decision from the refs.

Wrestling should just be eliminated pure and simple. Who watches League for the ruck?

Would like to see origin on stand along weekends during a 22 round season. But that will never happen so the next best option is to play it after the grand final. This season has shows how it adversely affects the competition. The quality of the footy has deteriorated and the crowds haven't been great (must acknowledge the weather though).

origin has to be during the season though, as it allows form to come into it. If it was after the gf, players like hayne/inglis/taylor/harrison/myles will not have played footy for 2 months, and might have made personal plans to boot. Then if someone gets injured, its not only harder to pick a replacement because there are no games to watch, but it can also put players out of the next season if they get a serious injury.

What they need to do is stand alone origin weekends. Why did we have a representative weekend earlier, but can't have it for the games showcase matches?

Plus as I said earlier on in the year, you play Origin after the Grand Final and it means the Grand Final wouldn't be seen as the climax of the season as it deserves to be. No way in the world it would work.

As for changes to the game:
- Agree on clock stoppages, no kicking for touch for non-foul-play penalties, stand alone Origin weekends.

I'd also go for:
- in Heritage rounds all goal kickers must change their style to toe poking
- Ben Creagh to be the face of the Women in League round
- ban Anthony Mundine from all contact to and from any club

XD epic ideas hahahaha

Whenever Rocky Stuart holds a press conference someone from the opposing team gets to throw pies at him.

And not cream pies, steaming hot meat pies.
