Lockyer has never had a consistent or clever kicking game.
He has had a long kicking game but, the reality is, he normally finds an opposing fullback on the full. For the number of kicks he has per game / season, he doesn't have a good strike rate for 40 / 20's or for in goal restarts.
Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.
The talk about his kicking game being 'off' isn't really accurate. He has had his moments in the past, but his kicking game has never been one of his strong points IMO.
The contract talk with Lockyer is also a worry. As I mentioned in another post somewhere, I think the time has come for Darren and any money tied up in him at the expense of other players ( Hunt ) is money very poorly invested.
Regardless of what he has been, the club needs to look at the immediate and short term futue.
That is where the games that count are played. Sentimentality and nostalgia are things for the memory and serve no purpose, something the Broncos seemed to be very familiar with.
Axing a star player a season early used to be the tactic.
And, so it should be with Darren.
Darren looks old and slow and there isn't a cure for that.
Make him the assistant coach next season and let him play the odd game.
