Yeah he's a good call. Who was that other Parra bloke, a forward, who had the world at his feet and never kicked on? Mateo?
Feleti had a pretty solid career to be fair. He was a ball playing lock in a time when locks were just hit up work horses. He would be a massive asset in todays game.

One of those many players whose skills and physical attributes meant he fell awkwardly between positions and never really found a home at any. The standard great footballer but not a great lock/five eight etc

I feel like the lock forward has reverted to the mid-00s era where players like Halatau and Jensen were in vogue. Now there's room for players like Hetherington, Cotter, McInness, Smith to play tight and attack that middle third causing the defence to jam in.

I actually think Mateo came up in the right era but he just never had the stability around him to make the most of his talent. You compare him to a similar player like John Sutton and the major difference between the two is that Sutton was at Souths when they got their act together.

I think the third prop became the meta around the mid-10s with Parker, Gallen, Taumalolo, Klemmer, Finucane, Merrin etc.

The role changed when players like Murray and Radley began to emerge. Both Canberra and Melbourne also found some success when they moved Havili and B. Smith from dummy half to lock forwards as well.

Anyone remember Ben Czislowski? I vaguely remember him being one of the bright up and comers at the Broncs and then signed with the Dogs to disappointment in Brisbane. Did he even play one game of first grade?

Also, remember Mitch Garbutt supposedly being a key signing and played like 5 minutes of first grade?

Good post. Bennett should also get credit for catching the trend early. Though his execution of giving a broken Jack Bird a huge contract to fill the role was a disaster, the idea was correct

I don't think Bennett had a position in mind for Bird. He just liked him as a player and he'd pick him in any position that needed filling. He would have been like a Berrigan, where he'd start off in the centres before finding himself at five eighth and then maybe a stint at fullback, never really learning a position.

I think Bennett was always going to stick with McGuire regardless. I still find that whole McGuire situation so odd. He'd re-signed with the Broncos till 2021 but then out of the blue wanted a release.

Either he received a tap on the shoulder and Bennett is telling lies or he was co-erced while under contract.

You may be right but It was reported quite a bit that ball playing lock was the intention for Bird

Wayne did want Bird to play lock. I remember speaking to some of the boys when he signed and it was the plan Bennett discussed, he wanted to team to have a proper ball player at 13. They were definitely gearing up to have him at lock but his failure to get over that sternum injury meant it never really got off the ground and he was never really fit enough after that to make it work.

Czislowski played one game us I think, and a handful for the Doggies. He always seemed like too much of a pillow to me - you want your front rowers to be like granite, but he was too plush. I didn't see much of him though, so I would very much discount my opinion.

I don't remember Garbutt being a key signing... I just think many were excited about him because of that run he went on in a Qld Cup match when he returned a kick-off. Looked like a rampaging rhino. But now I think about it, I might be mixing him up with another player.

Did anyone other than Wolfie report on it?

I remember the reports that Bird wanted to be closer to the ball whether that meant lock, five-eighth or fullback but they hadn't actually settled on a position.

Then Bird had surgery so it all became moot.

As a club we are hardly going to shout our exact plans from the rooftops, but there was enough talk from Bird and Bennett, and even Locky at the time before he fell out with Wayne when he was a bit closer to the playing side of things to show its something we were seriously looking at. Its all on here somewhere.

Ha!!! Felatio Mateo we used to call him.
