This is a spot to tell stories of encounters with Broncos, current and former while you have been out in the wild, and yes I have a banger to kick us off that happened today.

Had the pleasure to have a brief gasbag about Origin with none other than Lote Tuqiri today at work. Dude is still massive and in great shape, he could slot in for QLD at the end of the month. He tells me he thinks Sam Walker will be in the halves but he is concerned about his defence. Also doesn't much like the idea of Ponga in there either. Reckons it'll be a tough year for the Maroons.

I'm happy to see he still keeps up with the game.

Israel Folau at browns plains subway. I was behind him in line and he turned and stared at me for ages waiting for me to recognise him. I was stoned and just thinking to myself wtf is this ****wit staring at, I was a broncs fan but didn’t even recognise him. Eventually he stopped staring at me and I only figured out who he was because some other patron asked the staff for a pen because he wanted his autograph. I just wanted some munchies and pretty much ignored him.

I would have said some fighting words for the endless stare at me but the **** was ****ing massive back then.

Smokin Joe was a mate of a mate. Met him once. Last I heard he worked in a bakery on straddy. That was a while back though.

Early years....but I knew Craig Grauf

personally.

Maybe he could smell the weed on you and was waiting for you to help a brother out ?

Doubt it. People who smoke weed probably go to hell.
In Genesis 1:29, God declares:

  • "I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food."

What’s an origin game once at a pub with Tonie Carroll.

Saw Tonie Carroll at Big W Strathpine once, back when he was playing. Couldn't mistake that chin. He was pushing a trolley for his wife.

Walked past Hodgo at Suncorp once.

And that's all my stories.

Hodges must live in Albany Creek as I see him all the time at the Woolies.
Used to see Gillet feeding his face at Outback Steakhouse in Aspley a fair bit.
Tuquiri at Minnippi golf course a while back with his boys. What really stood out is just how thin his pins are - long skinny things but massive upper body. Always wondered how he never had bad leg injuries considering.

Used to do a second gig at Suncorp on game day behind the bars as a bit of fun, saw plenty of old boys. TBH the only Bronco I've ever directly engaged was Renouf as he was my first real sporting idol. Just basically mate I gotta tell you I used to love watching you play as a kid. Super nice guy, offered a handshake and had a quick chat with him.

I just let 'em be though. I can only imagine what it's like with everyone wanting a piece of you in your spare time.

Yeah, he does, a friend of mine used to live quite close to him.

A guy I went to uni with lived next door to Locky in Paddington, said he was always a nice bloke.

All I know is Shane Webcke lives somewhere in Toowoomba and Cory Paix's parents are locksmiths and Roise's vet knows them. i don't know about Tyson Smoothy

Sar Jane Carlaw once at Eatons Hill Grill'd. He was a fire fighter.

When I was down in Brisbane for Round One my uber driver mentioned how many times he bumped into Corey Parker

My Boss spoke on the phone to Oates a little while back wanting council to pay for his fence.

Been inside Sam Thaidays house just before he moved in and seen him plenty of times out Samford.

Did a yard clean up at Josh McGuire's house. It was disgusting.

Played backyard footy with Tyson Gamble when he was a kid.

Wally gave me a QLD hat when I was a kid and used to see him punching durries at channel 9 studios when I worked there.

Kicked the footy with Mick Ennis at Broncos training.

Played against Billy Walters in my juniors and Kev ran the water. Played against Renoufs son too.

Worked next door to Gordy's house at Bardon.

Met Alf and Mick Hancock at the Ekka when I was a kid and thought Mick was blind for a long time.

I’ve got a few to share from my previous life in the media .. My favourite involved Petero Civonacieva.. It was around this time in 2007, I was doing sport for Channel 9 Gold Coast and pretty late one afternoon we got call from the Sydney newsroom that Petero had signed to leave the Broncos and go to Penrith. I was ordered to jump in my car and shoot up to Sanctuary Cove where Petero was in origin camp with the Maroons. I think I’d already done a local story earlier in the day on the origin camp etc and this was a request from Danny Weidler to get an interview with Petero for his story in Sydney that night.

Anyway, I got up there and met one of our camera guys who’d come from another job and we hopped in a golf buggy and took off in the direction we were told the players were heading (they were going from their rooms for an afternoon training session) .. As luck should have it, after a few mins I spotted Petero riding on the back of another golf buggy about 50m or so in front of us.. I don’t think I even had to wave at him before he’d spotted us and reached around to whoever was driving the buggy and told them to stop.

So he’s hopped off the buggy and waited for us to get there, then asked “are you wanting to speak with me?” It was absolutely incredible – he was more than happy to stop for an interview and was the most ridiculously humble, polite, warm, honest person you could hope to meet. As a journo, you very rarely if ever encounter that kind of reception from professional sportsmen in situations like that. Completely unaffected by his status as a footballer / celebrity etc. Just a wonderful bloke..

Anyway, so Weidler got his yarn that night and we didn’t have to see the back of his head 🤭
