Willie Tonga talks of quitting Cowboys and Joining Broncos

Re: Willie Tonga talks of quitting Cowboys and Joining Bronc

I actually agree with Big Dave and I watched a lot of Cowboys games last season.

Good player, but like Tate doesn't have the speed to make that great an impact.

Tonga is step up from Glenn and Gillett but his best footy is behind him.
He's a one trick pony with that in and away, but due to injuries he lack the speed off the mark to pose many problems for opposition teams.

Uhhh... did you watch Tonga play last year?

Edit: Personal Insult

Exactly.
Reminds me a bit of Michael De Vere.
Back in the day De Vere was quite speedy.
But towards the latter part of his career, he often nothing in attack except kick goals.
I see the same thing happening with Tonga and Tate

Re: Willie Tonga talks of quitting Cowboys and Joining Bronc

He's nowhere near as damaging in attack as Inglis can be, but he is much better in defence and plays for his outside man as much as he does for himself. Would be a very good signing.

So this is different to Greg Inglis....how?

Tonga still has another 3 years (at least) left in the NRL. He's experienced and he's still in good form. I'd take him any day. Provided that we don't pay overs for him though.[/quote:kd8k6yft]

Are you joking?

Inglis is 23 as opposed to 27 and doesn't have a history of knee injuries like Tonga does.

Where as Tonga would be a good short term option, Inglis would've been a GREAT short term option with potential to be an EXCELLENT long term option.[/quote:kd8k6yft]

I wasn't making a comparison to Tonga from Inglis silly. I was saying how is it any different considering Inglis isn't a long term option either. If you think Inglis was seriously going to be here for more than 2-3 years then you're kidding yourself.

And what makes you think Inglis would be any better than Tonga in the short term? Inglis wouldn't even be in the top 6 or 7 centres in the game last year, he was average at best for his club. He wasn't that much better the year before either. There's every chance that Inglis could have been the fat, lazy and non-effective player like he was in 2010.[/quote:kd8k6yft]

The way things were going before the Rabbits came in it looked very likely Greg was going to stay with the Broncos, that was until he had his Brittany moment I guess...

Fair points but I believe a change of scenary would've done him a world of good not to mention Inglis would actually get some quality ball instead of having to compete with nuff nuff Hoffman for it.

Even then it wasn't like Greg was bad in 2010, in fact I think his 2010 was pretty underated. if you watched a lot of the Storm's line breaks would start from a good Inglis run that would attract a bucket load of defenders.

Try telling that to some of the Johnny come latelies who've only watched his performances for Australia.

Re: Willie Tonga talks of quitting Cowboys and Joining Bronc

Does Tonga really need to be a super attacking weapon?? He is a quality centre and would be great at our club. That said I would prefer we don't sign him.

Re: Willie Tonga talks of quitting Cowboys and Joining Bronc

If we wanted somebody in the short term I think so.

Otherwise you're sending all the wrong messages to the kids.

Re: Willie Tonga talks of quitting Cowboys and Joining Bronc

We just don't know Hodges will be like back from injury.
So a strike centre is important with no Israel around as well

You can accuse Tatey of a lot of stuff, but lack of speed isn't one of them!

Having said that, I would love your idea of getting Dylan Farrell, who's going to have Inglis, Champion and Best ahead of him. There are a few youngsters out there that I would have liked to see linked to us, Vidot, Ferguson and Farrell. Big future ahead of them IMO.

I'd actually like to see us retaliate at some stage and poach a few Souths players:
Burgess and Farrell would do just fine! icon_thumbs_u

we all know Inglis wouldn't have been a long term option either

I can these days, he's really just a middle of the road centre in terms of pace.

I wasn't having a go at you mate, I was surprised because I genuinely thought Tonga had a great season ...for the first half of it and Origin at least. And I thought it was pretty obvious I meant last season, not last year. Maybe take some deep breaths and calm down?

Well you could accuse him of a lot of things, but being slow wouldn't be one of them.

He is not slow, we just don't see him in open spaces anymore..

Tonga doesn't create anything for anyone, unless Thurston throws him a pass in wide open spaces.
He is too slow these days to create anything with his own skill
