Its a bit hard to support it when it gets shown like the second game on Friday Night Footy

But that was not the original scheduling, however there was so many grumblings etc about how crap it would be before it even started, that Ch 9 decided the majority of people didn't want to watch/support it, so they pushed back the telecast times. I agree they should have shown more support for the games and shown them at a more reasonable hour, but the attitudes that were getting around led to make the decision they did. It's a bit of a vicious circle really. But to be honest I think there are a lot of "World Cup Baggers", who wouldn't have watched it no matter what time it was shown.

I tried to stay up and watch it but all the ads and the late time slot took away whatever amount of interest I had left.

In a time of the year where there was no other sport on free to air tv surely they could've made it work...

The fact is it's fashionable to be critical of rugby league. Channel 9 are the leaders in this trend. You watch all their experts who supposedly love the game rave about how bad it is at all levels.

There's really only 2 major problems:
1. Too many chiefs and not enough indians (too many boards etc)
2. The current rule set encourages boring Melbourne Storm style football

Everything else that gets raved about (grapples, player exodus, lack of crowds, lack of interest in rep footy etc) are symptoms of the above two problems.

LOLZ.

You really don't like structured play do you Coxy? You know, when I first joined BHQ, you were the biggest supporter of never going back to the 5 metre rule and the "bad ole' days" of "bash and barge" football.

I think I speak for the entire RL supporter base in saying I agree reference the administartion of RL Australia-wide. Now to change RL, back to a more pure form of football, with not too many set plays, less dummy half and one off rucking, the answer is simple: 5 metre rule.

The 5 metre rule doesn't support metres from the ruck; forwards actually have to pass to the fringes. Also, halves don't have the ability to set those deep backline movements because, if said movement fails, the attack has lost 5+ metres.

IMO, the 5 metre rule would allow much more ad-hoc backline play, as well as seeing real backrowers (and, zomg, specialists locks again) playing off 3rd and 4th, as 1st and 2nd would be for the real props again.

I love structured play. But not when said structure involves 3-4 dummyhalf runs or forward rucks followed by a kick which is what Melbourne do 90% of the time.

I think reducing to a 5 metre rule could well help. What we have now is bash and barge more than anything, which is why there's so few genuine halves anymore. They're all centres, backrowers etc.

I agree, Ch 9 did themselves no favours and turned off those of us that do like to support the game and the World Cup (but strangely they will use the fact that people couldn't stay up and watch it so late translating to low ratings and therefore justify their decision, citing that people didn't watch it - TV execs [icon_shru ).

Would have been nice if the IRLF had actually stood up to them over not fulfilling their contract and showing games live, so they have to take much of the blame as well.

Ch 9 should not be allowed to treat the game with the dis-respect they do and remain the broadcaster, but un-supportive comments from fans doesn't help any. I'm not saying people have to praise the World Cup, but why comment at all? If you don't like it, don't watch it - no need to constantly bag it. And agree with Coxy - ch 9's commentators are the worst at this.

Ironically, the Ch 9 guys have been waxing lyrical about the games and the tournament while covering them. Amazing their employer shows such scant regard for it however.

It's funny when you hear Gus & Rabs gushing over the world cup only for them to be cut off midsentence to go to a 10minute block of ads at midnight...

Australia by at least 30. And thus ends another incredibly successful world cup. Thank god I don't have to see it for another 5 years.

I think a 5 million dollar profit which can be used to further develop the international game is a pretty good success.

Well guys, the IRLF now wants to take the TV rights by itself separate from the NRL. I think this will definitely help and they had made $5 million profit from this tournament, that's a pretty good success if you ask me.

Yep. The IRLF need to get themselves more independent of the NRL and ESL organisations. Until now those orgs have basically produced all their income so they've had to play nice.

I think this shows they can make money and be successful off the international game, and so hopefully they can apply some weight to ensure international scheduling is higher in the priorities than grand finals and origin wankfest series.
