Pull the other one mate.

All the players you listed went well under the radar of the majority of posters on here. Apart from yourself and BroncoMatt, I don't think there is anyone on here who has a clue about our juniors.

Cheers for the wrap mate!!

of course there have been many examples which back up your case (Wapau, Michaels etc), but it's not just me and Matt - there are plenty from this forum who watch a fair bit of Under 20's and QCup, and it's only fair enough to get excited when they see someone carve up in those grades. We are fans afterall - not the coaching staff. Most people on here I think are smart enough to know that while its good to see the young fellas swatting flies in the lower grades, the NRL is a whole new level.

Not exactly an accurate scepticism. The Broncos whole side bar Wallace has played 20's and or Queensland Cup. That's a pretty healthy return from the two comps.

Most of the that disappointment is because people just rely on hear-say to 'wrap' guys in the Queensland Cup or 20's. Very few watch themselves and make up their own mind.

I would say most of the time, the players who have come through QCup or U20's who have then done well in first grade have done so reasonably quietly. Players who are hyped up are generally the ones who fall short of expectations. From my observations at least.

But of course, the amount of players who aren't up to scratch are always going to outnumber the players who are.

Let's also not forget some people get caught up in the media hype over particular young players. "The next [insert name of player who can't possibly be replicated]" kind of stories.

Remember a young Shaun Timmins being described as a modern day Wally Lewis combined with John Raper...I shit you not.

Inglis runs to the left hand side from fullback, Kahu is playing right. Wallace has been going well for a struggling Norths, he hasn't played in two weeks though.

Inglis runs on the Souths left hand side, which is the defences right.

I'm going to judge him. I don't care what injuries he's had, if he's not up to first grade, he's not up to it. I hope he surprises me, if he has a blinder, I'll come in here and say I'm impressed.

I don't think I'll have to though. I think he's going to be another young player who BroncosHQ members talk up to be the greatest thing on the planet, only to fall on his hass, play a handful of games, and never be heard of again.

So you're going to write off a player's entire career based on his second ever game?

Well damn, might as well retroactively dump our entire side, most of them were pretty crappy by their second game too.

I can sort of see where this is coming from, but in the case of Kahu, it's the media who has spoken him up and a few people have jumped on board. He isn't rated because of his stint in the 20s, he's rated because of his play for Keebra. He showed potential for the 20s but mostly played on the wing and didn't really get going until he played in the centres late in 2010. From there, he's virtually had two seasons written off due to a knee injury.

I don't think he should even be playing first grade but due to our shallow stocks in the centres and injuries to Copley & Yow Yeh, it's basically a necessity.

The last player being talked up here was Dane Gagai (besides the Big Dave wankfest that is), and well... He looks pretty handy! :winky:

I'd say from what I saw in the U20's (and I did go to most of their home games the last few seasons), he could be as good, if not better, as Gagai imo.
But FG is literally a whole different ball game, where the talent on display in other grades doesn't always translate... Hello Luke Capewell?

Yeah, hoping he's going to be a Gagai, and not a Beale.

Oh come on... Kahu will never be good as Gagai. Injuries or not

While I am optimistic Nashy I will sit back and reflect how Kahu has gone at the end of his season. I guess people are excited because Wally Lewis has selected his 4 superstars of the future from the entire NRL and Jordan Kahu is one of them. This could in fact add extra pressure to the poor guy.
I watch most U20s games at home and Kahu has looked solid without being spectacular but this might be because he just goes about his job without any fanfare. Do yourself a favor Nashy and have a look at this U20 team at present. It appears to have a few players who might just come through for us. The most since 2008 at least. Unfortunately I am not sure there is a playmaker amongst them.

Don't often agree with you Big Dave but Gagai was always going to be something special. Easy to see but now we have to move on because I think Gagai plays for Newcastle

Unfortunately when you are selected for first grade in the NRL, you are going to be judged. How harshly they are judged is where the difference of opinion will be.

Bit of a generalisation to say most of our players were "pretty crap" in their 2nd games. Some players start off strong and then dip, hence 2nd season syndrome.

Besides, it can work both ways, he plays well i'm sure he will get himself more supporters on this forum and elsewhere.
I for one hope he plays well, we could do with a good back coming through and demanding a position.

Of course they are going to be judged, but those who are judging are morons if they don't have the right perspective. That was my point.

I admit it's not likely, especially after those 2 ACL injuries, but he definitely has potential...

Apologies, i took your comment:

"Written: Don't judge a guy on just his second game when he's coming back from two ACL tears."

as dont judge a guy on just his second game when he's coming back from two ACL tears.

If you are fit enough to run out there you are going to be judged, 2nd game or prior injury regardless.

Anyway, seems we agree that one bad game doesnt mean a player is not worth persisting with.

That wasn't the post you initially responded to and even then I don't know what's so difficult to understand. Yes, people will judge him but those people are morons if they don't take into consideration that this is a guy coming back from two knee reconstructions in just his second game. How was Hodges after just one ACL tear?

Like I said, I don't believe he should be playing right now but is merely out of necessity. I hope he goes well, but I don't expect him to show us why he's so highly rated. I just want him to get through the game and do his job.

EDIT: This is what a Seagulls fan posted on LU.

Good luck to Kahu but he was very ordinary last week against Sunshine Coast. No problems with defence, but he simply doesn't run hard enough to get to the position he needs to be backing up in attack. Conceded a drop out by being lazy and turned a number of good attacking chances into ordinary plays.

Maybe he is field shy after the injuries, maybe he is lost at fullback or maybe he is disinterested playing Queensland Cup. There's been a few of them over the years.

Why dont we wait to see what people say about him after tonight rather than trying to predict what the "morons" will say?

Any of you guys actually watch Gagai's games in the NRL for the Broncos? Every run, he'd make maybe 5 metres and then be dragged back 10. When you talk about getting a roll-on, Gagai was awesome - for the opposition. It's no wonder the coaches were on his case constantly to bulk up, he was getting rag dolled too much. Of course, now he's gone to the Knights, he's finally taken the advice on board, put on some size, and is playing more to his potential. But for those who are saying 'Gagai was always going to be something special', hindsight doesn't count.

This was not hindsight, he was always a class above in U20s. How is it hindsight when I would say he is no where near where he will end up unless of course attitude intervenes.
the kid was just 20 at the Broncos and some do not bulk up as quickly as others, who are you to say he was not trying to.
BTW do you go and watch the U20s matches to form an opinion of our juniors? This is a simple question not trying to start an argument. :-)
