Second Brisbane NRL Bid

I don't see how it's a good idea. Would be better having another QLD team in another part of the state, like Central Queensland, Sunshine Coast or Ipswich.

I can see both sides. As a Broncos supported I obviously don't see the merit in a second team. Giving another a region (Ipswich would get massive support) a team would be a good way of not cutting our grass too badly. But there are a lot of League fans that support say the Cowboys by default because they find the broncos arrogant & snooty. Another team that is also for the greater 'Brisbane' area (and not limited to a small region) would hopefully engage those fans, while sharing Suncorp stadium.

Could Suncorp Stadium manage handling the Bombers (likely name), Broncos, Reds and, in the early part of the year, the Roar at the same time?

Another team in South East Queensland could work but I don't think it should be called Brisbane. I'd prefer a team at Rocky TBH. Perth should be the next port of call but what David Gyngell wants he usually gets. The bloke is a ****.

Brisbane isn't big enough for a second team. It is that simple.

If rugby league was the only game in town, yes, Brisbane could afford it. But as redbur points out, we've got the Reds, the Lions, the Roar.

The wear and tear on Suncorp Stadium already took it to breaking point this year, and I certainly don't think it's feasible without bringing another ground up to standard.

I'd much rather a club in central Queensland if they have to have another QLD team, but as Beads said, Perth ticks all the boxes:
- large market
- local rugby league presence (local league is quite solid)
- large ex-pat east coasters, kiwis, saffas and poms who could embrace a league team
- significant corporate dollars while the mining boom continues there
- whole new time zone making Saturday night footy truly extend until close to midnight east coast time (5.30, 7.30, 9.30 all live). Even Friday night could have an east coast game live at 7.30, west coast 9.30.

Perth is a must IMO.

Yeah, it does make the most sense.

As long as it's at the expense of another team, ie, there's not enough talent for more than 16 teams, so if they were 17th or 18th it would dilute the others.

Yes, but at the same time I wouldn't want it to be a relocation. It'd have to be a team folding. I don't think Perth would accept a rebadged Cronulla for example.

Brisbane could support a new team as the supporters for them would not be Broncos supporters. I doubt if crowds would be any different perhaps with only a very slight drop. A new club would get new supporters, supporters who leaned towards a Sydney club or even the other two Qld sides rather than support the Broncos. If anyone would have a drop in support it would be most likely, the Gold Coast as they tend to get the disenchanted fans. As a Broncos supporter I wouldn't like to see anything hurt them but they survived the scumbag Crushers even when those dogs were receiving the support of the crooked QRL.

I'm not concerned about crowds or memberships for the Broncos. More so I'm concerned about sponsorship dollars. While the Broncos do very handsomely, and indeed are the only NRL club that turns a profit, adding another team to the market will not only reduce their choice of sponsors, but will also reduce their asking price - competition has that effect.

Adding another team might increase the overall corporate spend on rugby league, but I reckon only by a fraction - maybe 25% being optimistic. So 125% of current revenue divided across 200% increase in overheads? Doesn't make sense IMHO.

I have no reason behind this... but i always had a soft spot for "The Rams"

Out of all the old expansion teams the Rams were the least supported, it's an area that IMO will need time to develop and patience will be needed for any new team.

For mine Perth is the obvious first choice then a second Brisbane team, no to central coast unless its a Sydney club relocating as the last thing the NRL needs is another NSW club let alone another one so close to Sydney.

Agree, i think Perth is the lower hanging fruit for NRL expansion.

If i was the NRL i'd like to see the GC establish themselves more and find a bit of success before a 2nd Brisbane team was introduced as i feel they would have a bigger negative effect on the Titans than they would the Broncos.

Yeah, certainly the Titans declining support is a strong argument against rushing to bring in a new Brisbane team.

That's spot on

I have lived my entire life in Adelaide and can tell you as much as I want a team here, it is a long way off from being a good idea

Adelaide is so AFL crazed it seemingly fails to acknowledge the existence of any other sport

Adelaide needs to get perhaps 2 NRL games each season for a few years, to lift the codes profile

As for the Rams, I always wanted them to merge with Canberra so they could be called the Ram Raiders :loool:

Think Gold Coast is a bit irrelevant, that area has been a sporting grave yard for all sports for some reason.

A mate played for both clubs so I always had a soft for the Rams, was a dark day in league when them, the Reds and Crushers were kicked out.

Thats right, and a 2nd Brisbane team is just going to take away from their fledgling supporters, sponsors and playing squad. The NRL have backed the Titans, they should at least leave the dance with the girl they took before hooking up with one of her mates, at least for a few more years anyway.
