While it wasn't an ideal signing, a player of Smith's calibre is difficult to ignore and he would have been a tremendous boost to the club. One of my favourite players of all time, a tremendous competitor and most of all a Queensland legend!

Still, isn't the end of the world. I'm still very pleased with the signing of Milford and if we can land an outside back or half I'll be content with our recruitment moving forward.

With all that said, as a Rugby League fan, I'm glad Smith is sticking with Melbourne. One club players are a rarity and should be appreciated more in this sport.

Yeah I don't believe for a second we didn't make him an offer, there was just too much smoke out there to be otherwise

If we didn't make him an offer then the board needs to sack White and Gee immediately. Like right this very second.

If I was the board the "please explain" re this comment from Smith would have gone out within 5 minutes of the comment having been made.

We probably didn't make a formal offer as that by stage it's usually a done deal anyway. We would have had informal talks and the club realised he wasn't really serious about coming our way so they didn't bother with getting a contract written up.

No, what he said was that we didn't make him an offer. He didn't use weazel words such as "formal offer".

If we didn't make him an offer at all then I reiterate, White and Gee should be sacked today.

He signed a 4 year deal, and will play until he's about 36 !!

I really don't think we could've afforded to put that many eggs in the one basket.

He turns 31 later this year, so it's 35. Lockyer played until he was 34 (and was still all class at the end), Langer played until 36 and was still class, Menzies played until like 50 and was class too. I dunno why people just assume Smith would decline, he's one of the best players of all time.

Defends in the middle of the park could be one reason. I think Smithy will decline quickly.

I am thankful every single day that you are not the board.

If you believe what someone says in a press conference for their resigning to their current club, that is mindblowing

So does Parker and Gallen, and they are aging like fine wine.

Smith's advantage is that his game isn't based on athleticism.

And you don't think it's right to ask the question, particularly given the Inglis incident?

Wow....just wow.....

Pretty sure the board would've been informed of any movements regarding recruitment of this nature, but hey, you're probably right... Smith spent all this time weighing up a non-existent offer from the Broncos.

Off topic but did you see his goal line drop-out on the weekend? It was like 70m! Ours are usually around 40m :(

As a big fan of Kyle Feldt's abilities, allow me!

True, Melbourne just recently signed superstars George Rose and Ben Roberts. It's that sort of superstar pulling power that Cameron Smith has, they don't care about money they just want to play alongside Smith.
You are pretty thick to think that a future immortal like Smith has no attraction power for other players wanting to come to a club. Players like rose and roberts would take less money to play with Smith, Slater, Cronk and to be at a place like the Storm that has that an aura that we used to have.

It's a shame that the board has stacked with like minded clowns the last few years who have lost us Inglis, Bellamy and missed out on all the top halves who were on the market....but wait you would rather not get someone of the calibre of Smith but get Khunt back from fumbleball.

So if we didn't make him an offer what was he weighing up for nearly 6 months?

Khunt isnt nearly retired for a start.

Players like rose and roberts take less where ever they go because they are shit. Are you serious?

What actual star player has signed for much less at the storm due to 'the aura of smith'?
