Well its between these two. I rate Billy slightly higher because of his longevity in the position and I think he is a little better under the high ball. But talking of Locky , he retired when he was yards slower then in his prime whereas Billy has lost little, if any speed. I just dont see why everyone is writing him off.
Yes.

Because the best fullback of all time is currently 40 years old.

it's not writing him off ... it's preparing for the future.

naming him this series delays our future preparation by 12 months, it is one of the biggest mistakes NSW made over our dominant period.

But tell me why Billy cant be part of our future for the next two years ?

He is not even guaranteed to okay for the Storm next season.

He is 32 and hasn't played at that level in 2 years.

It is a big step up, especially in the speed the game is played.

Time to get our future prospects ready ... one series loss could turn into two or three

If we go back to Billy and still lose, then what?

Get the kids in there. just move Gagai to centre and bring in Holmes, simples.

not to mention that this is Thurstons and possibly Cronks final series and even 2 games (and camps) with these guys will be invaluable

If we get beat with Billy in the team , well so what ? No ones blaming Boyd for the first game loss and I would hope no one would blame Billy if we loose the second unless he had a shocker. This champion has earned the right to go out on his terms just like Locky , Petro and Price , Wally and Alphie did.

Prediction. Slater will get selected for game 2 just because Kevie will demand it. He will have a blinder. All this talk of putting him out to pasture will evaporate. Thats all I have to say on this matter.

Yeah look I'm not really arguing the point. I have no doubt Slater will do a great job if he is selected BUT my point is that we should be looking to the future. We have a gun young guy in Holmes who is knocking the door down to get in, why go back to Slater if we decided to move on ONE game ago?

If he gets picked, I won't be throwing the toys out of the cot and completely understand the decision, I'm just of the opinion we should move on now the decision's been made.

If we pick Slater for game two and lose, then what do we do for the third game? No doubt we keep him in but it just compounds the probable retirements we will already have this year when we could be giving arguably our most promising young back a taste of it now to get him ready for next year when hopefully our team is a bit less of a lottery.

We need to blood new players in the forwards, let's not do the same in the backs just yet, or we'll make exactly the same mistakes as NSW.
Slater, Cronk and Smith is probably the greatest spine combination we've seen at club or even Origin level. As good as Darius is, he doesn't come close to the level of understanding and threat that Billy delivers, and I don't think we'd lose a thing defensively, as in terms or organising defense, Slater is as good as anyone!

I mean, if Boyd wasn't a Broncos player, this probably wouldn't even be a discussion...

I agree to an extent but I think Thurston has the presence to demand the ball. Something Milford didn't. He tried hard but was starved of possession. As a consequence NSW had only to target cronk on the 4th or 5th tackle. Its no coincidence that once Milford was injured qld looked more dangerous. Smith was playing 5/8 with the authority of a veteran of the side. He could demand the ball when he needed to. Cronk and smith were guilty of trying too hard, the same fault of hunt early in the year. That too was with Milford playing 5/8.
I suspect once next year without, either Thurston or Cronk, Milford will blossom into the player we hope for. As it is Bennet will be working to have him become more extravert on the field this season.

Even with Slater and Thurston, it wouldn't have made a difference on Wednesday night. The forward pack is QLD's biggest problem.

Depends on your definition of "difference" I guess. I still think QLD lose, but not by the scoreline they did.

If Scott, Inglis, Parker etc were still in this team, I'd probably be ok with Boyd over Slater as a view to the future, but the QLD team was already missing enough experience for game 1 (even before Thurston was ruled out) they should still have picked as many experienced players as they could if they were still in form. Slater is experienced and in form, and I think he deserved one final series. Imo it was a mistake to leave him out of game, and with the series on the line, he should be picked for game 2. If useless ***** like Myles, Guerra and O'neill deserved some loyalty in game 1, surely Slater does now too.

boys is good, but slater is the best.

boyd doesnt make long range breaks or tries like billy. yes defensively on his line boyd may be in front but every other aspect slater is still clearly miles ahead.

this will stir a few up, but i dont rate boyd in the top 3 attacking/running full backs of the game. he doesnt have a kick option either and majority of the time looks to offload instead of running the god dam ball back. while im at it, when he does get tackled, he screams at the ref and shakes his head like a sour 5yr old kid who just got told he cant have a kinder surprise.

Actually, it's no coincidence when Milf and Pearce went off at the same time, NSW exploded, 3 tries in ten minutes. We went to shit after Milf went off (not because he went off) but that's when QLD's defence tired and they couldn't finish off their tries.

He is limited. What he does, he does very well. But he can't do too much else.

Can't fault Broncos supporters liking Boyd better, though.
