MELTDOWN Wayne Bennett - Moves to Souths

Should Wayne Bennett's Contract be Extended?

Which to me either means one of 3 things

a) Wayne has too much of an emotional attachment to Boyd

b) Wayne doesn’t want to drop his club captain

c) He has no one better to take his spot

Darius lately has been half decent at Centre and his general movement seems a lot more free but as soon as he has gone back to fullback his deficiencies have come flooding back to the core. The fact that he still isn’t backing himself at full pace means the decision to move him to centre should have been done months ago. Then at least by now Isaako might have picked up the nuances of the position a lot more and we’d be better served in that position. I just believe now it has been a selfish decision by either Boyd or Bennett to have persevered with Boyd’s injury struggles this long when it was clear after the first dozen games nothing has going to change. Whether it is mental or physical it needs to be sorted out over the off season as a priority.

Lock in 'a'.

What a bunch of crap that was. Fox doing a lead in clip with "Broncos thinking about sacking Wayne" then crossing to a stock standard presser asking the usual shit questions and getting the usual straight bat from McGuire.

I am an unashamed Bennett fan, but I can admit there has been some strange/questionable decisions from him and the club does have to move on at some point

The trick is when that point is

Amongst other considerations, is whether there is anybody better to replace him

There's a few (thankfully only very few) on here ready to throw a "see ya later Benny" party without even knowing if there's a replacement lined up let alone the stock of said replacement

To those few it seems anybody is better then Wayne, and to you I say, you need a reality check

I'll cop it on the chin when Wayne is moved on, but it has to be for the right person

I am a big supporter of Wayne but this has to stop. He is not our future, everyone agrees on that, so the sooner he leaves the sooner we get on with the future.

Kevie is still an option and a good one. Siebold MAY be an option as early as next year although I would be surprised if Souffs let him go.

At any rate if Wayne stays what makes anyone think things will change next year? He has had all this year to change the halves and now is so invested in them I can't see him changing next year with anyone at the club.

We need a centre ( Bird ) but have no room to buy a half so, Bird to 6 and Milf 7 with Niko off the bench is probably the only other viable option.
We will still have a very limited 9 and quite possibly Boyd at 1. Lets say Boyd goes to centre and Isaako to fullback our backline could start as

Isaako
Pearson
Boyd
Roberts
Oates ATM
Bird
Milf

We will have a good side with another year of experience but still have no leader and no real style of a game plan.

For me, if I have to sit through another year of bash and barge and 1 out hit ups inside 20 before we do our move
I think I'll watch the rise of Lions as my preferred sport and I hate AFL.

The best solution would be pushing Boyd out the door (as harsh as that sounds).

I feel you've really nailed it with this post, well done.

I think most (and i could be wrong) would agree that there are some seemingly serious issues with the team at present and some (perhaps many) of them revolved around recruitment and retention. Of course, injuries are playing a major part in this regard, that should certainly not be forgotten.

So the questions still revolve around who is making these decisions about recruitment and retention and what is causing the seeming lack of leadership and cohesion in the side?

A lot of (the) Buck stops with Bennett but it certainly wouldn't only be him responsible. If this pushing him out is coming from a personal agenda from White or Morris (whoever this guy thinks he is), then one or both of them should go first. This club should always be bigger than any one or two people's agenda/s. That though, should also apply to Bennett if he is the one causing this de-stabilisation (if in fact it is even a thing).

No one can legitimately deny this current team is as good as 2015 but no one can also deny that this is to be expected given the retirements of some legends in Hodges and Parker and the dramatic decline in other top players in Boyd and Thaiday. It is really hard to drop those two guys anyway given they are the last remaining Bronco premiership players at the club (not including Bird as he was a Shark when he won it).

What can certainly be argued (and I could say successfully) is that this club is well stocked for the future and a lot of that will come down to recruitment and retention as well, credit where it is due. Fast forward to 2020, guys like Su'A, Fifita, Haas, Isaako, TPJ and Joffa will be the blokes this side is built around and it would be fair to say that if Bennett was given that one last one year extension, he would have the cattle to genuinely be judged on (he doesn't really this year due to said injuries).

That said, if the club LEGITIMATELY feels he has aggrieved them in some way or has ACTUALLY 'lost the dressing room', then this path is understandable. However, it would be hard to argue the latter point with a straight face, so the former point is of vital importance here.

While it is easy to see where the argument of Bennett being past it comes from (and I do personally agree to a point), the fact still remains, he is the best coach ever and if not for his age, most would probably not even be thinking about moving on.

Bash and barge ?? You for real , has been our execution, handling and defense that hasn't been up to standard. Gillett and bird gone for majority of the season and junior's filling our voids. Throw in the form of our captain,McGuire and the likes of kahu and macca ( who came back from an acl ) then throw in the constant media circus...... **** me !!!! Some people just over react and jump on the bandwagon!!!! Has been a shit season and still some how holding onto 8th spot in a close comp. Anyone would think we are getting the spoon !! Oh thats right Bennett gas never got one of them but yeah lets **** him off anyways....

If we keep waiting for someone better than Wayne to come along and replace him then we will never get rid of Wayne. He'll be coach until he is 100.

There is no other coach in the game that has accomplished what he has so we will never find someone with a resume as good as his.

And quite frankly that whole "we can't replace him because there is no one better" is a bullshit excuse. The Broncos just need to find someone that has what it takes to be an NRL coach and can bring a new approach, a modern approach.

Bash and Barge yes for reals, you do watch right?
Read your own post mate, none of it lands in WBs lap???

As far as me being a band wagoner forget that shit. I have had so many back and forths defending him against some of the best Bennett haters on here, dating back to 2006

Yeah cause there is heaps of those guys that have what it takes to coach in the Nrl ... until they actually do and then ........ we get henjacked griffined !!!
You follow? We need a first class coach , and that is bellamy or bust imo. Otherwise Bennett overlooking seibold ..

For me I think the board/CEO need to front up just to end the media speculation. Although I don't think it's helped that Bennett is willingly providing commentary to every question about his future.

At the moment we're standing back and getting treated as a punching bag, which is a huge negative that the club is currently allowing to happen by staying quiet.

What I would like to see is the board outlining the succession plan for 2020 onwards.

To me in the short term they could come out and say something along the lines of the end of year meeting being a discussion on Bennett's future at the club and putting in place a succession plan to see him bow out gracefully.

We are still a long way off November 2019 when Bennett's contract ends so it is reasonable to delay contract extension talks especially for a guy nearing 70. Yes bennett is saying that he's keen to coach on but 12 months down the track may be a different story and then all of a sudden we're up shit creek with limited options after putting the house on Bennett for 2020... and even after 2020 we would need to be back in the hunt for another coach.

The end of Bennett is nigh but the board should have some foresight to not let it get ugly, which it currently happening purely because of media sensationalism and crickets from the Broncos allowing it to happen.

Say what you will about Bennett and his tactics (I have many issues with the current playing style), but it would be an extremely poor look to sack Bennett in the off season. In terms of football it is probably negated due to a fresh approach, but the broncos are more than a purely football team and they have a brand to manage and uphold.

Sacking Bennett in the off season would deny him and more importantly the fans a chance to say goodbye to a legend of the club (something they as a brand could milk through all of 2019 purely from a business perspective), it would also create backlash in the playing group, the fans and will be a serious blackspot on our history for years to come.

In short it would be a PR nightmare for all areas outside of the football field.

The broncos have been silent too long and it has gotten to the point where they must ensure Bennett remains at the club for 2019. It's far too late to find a new coach and the backlash for a rushed 2019 could potentially be hugely detrimental to the club under almost every situation other than a top 4 finish and serious premiership contention

Honestly, modern approach! As in 2015 old school and 2016 modern ??? Cause im sure mr old school took us to the GF. But then mr new school beat us but is now about to get the spoon . Im confused

Why haven't we even tried to play like 2015 again afterwards? It really feels like an anomaly.

"Truth sessions" tells me there's a lot of disunity within the squad, possibly over Bennett, or maybe even over the teams form and certain players are finger pointing.

Are we trying to get rid of him ASAP or just not re-sign him? Because from yesterday's articles, it made it seem like it's just Bennett that will try to walk out.
