Fifita Begins Origin Path

DAVID Fifita's stunning debut season in the NRL has fast-tracked him into Queensland's senior Emerging Origin player camp.
But the teenager is not taking anything on face value and is aware he has a fight to make the Broncos' team for round one in March.
This afternoon Fifita will join Broncos' teammates Joe Ofahengaue and Jaydn Su'A on the Sunshine Coast for the Origin hopefuls' camp.
He knows what to expect - this young talent has been through the junior versions of the program.
But it is certainly another step in his development at just 19 years of age.
"I'm going to camp this afternoon and am pretty excited to get selected in the Emerging Origin squad with the older boys," he said.
"It's another stepping stone for me and I am grateful to have some other Broncos in the team.
"I have been through the 16s and 18s (Emerging Origin) program.
"It is good to meet all the other guys from different clubs, come out and bond and train hard.
"It is great that staff get you on board with the mentors that come speak to us.
"So I am looking forward to it."
But Fifita faces a battle to be in the Broncos' team when the competition begins on March 14 with the NRL season opener against the Storm.
International Matt Gillett will return from missing almost the entire season with a neck injury, as will Su'A who broke his ankle last year.
Alex Glenn also missed time late in the year, injuries that provided Fifita with chances to show his wares.
But the youngster exhibits his maturity by being well aware of the competition he faces.
"Last year was a big eye opener and a learning curve for me," he said.
"I didn't expect it to come that quick but I grabbed it with both hands.
"Su'A, Gillett and Glenn are big boys that are in front of me.
"I just have to put my head down and work hard and if the opportunity comes, it comes.
"I'll just have to see how it folds out."

Has to be on the bench for Broncs at the very least you would expect.

Su'A recovery on track for Broncos despite ankle setback

Broncos forward Jaydn Su'A is on track to play the club's final trial against Gold Coast on March 2 despite suffering a minor setback after re-injuring his ankle prior to Christmas.
New coach Anthony Seibold is a huge fan of the 21-year-old back-rower, whose stellar 2018 was cut short when he broke his ankle in the 26-6 round 18 loss to the New Zealand Warriors.
Su'A had returned to light field work on his return to pre-season training but reinjured the ankle in a training warmup.
He has been doing much of his rehab off his feet and on the training bikes but Seibold said he was not concerned that he would miss the NRL season opener against Melbourne.
"Jaydn had a bit of a setback but he is progressing really well and all being well we are hoping he will get one trial in before the season, but if it is a risk we will be patient with him," Seibold told NRL.com.
"Our performance staff are taking away his running load and he is doing rehab at the moment so there are no real concerns."
Su'A, who made his debut for the Broncos in 2016 as an 18-year-old, emerged as a regular member of the Broncos' top 17 last year in the wake of season-ending neck injury to Maroons and Test forward Matt Gillett.

He has been named in the Maroons emerging squad and will take part in a training camp on the Sunshine Coast this weekend.
South Sydney had targeted the New Zealand-born forward before he re-signed with the Broncos until the end of 2020 and Seibold is looking forward to coaching him.
"I love Jaydn Su'A. I coached Jaydn in a Queensland emerging squad and Queensland under 18 team and I think all the members of the Broncos and people who have watched him play can see that he has got considerable talent and potential and is a very powerful athlete," Seibold said.
"I had a good connection with him when I coached him, and certainly at Souths we showed some interest in him.
"We have got a fair bit of depth in the back-row with Jaydn, Matt Gillett coming back, Alex Glenn an international and David Fifita, who jumped out of the ground and had a very good rookie season. There is a fair bit of competition for spots there."
Seibold said five-eighth Anthony Milford and Gillett, both on the road back from shoulder surgeries, were on track to play the trial against the Gold Coast Titans.

"Milly is going great and is in 80 per cent of our training now other than our high collision contact stuff, and it is the same with Matt Gillett," Seibold said
"There are no concerns from my end or our performance staff around Milly or Gillo. They will both play in the Gold Coast trial. There are no doubts about that."
Milford's application to his recovery has impressed the coach.
"The thing I am particularly pleased with about Milly is his body composition. In the Broncos 1.2km shuttle test that they have done here at the club for many years he broke his personal best time by 17 seconds," Seibold said.
"He has done a lot of hard work over the off-season and the pre-season and wants to be an elite halfback, and that is the challenge for Milly.
"He needs to improve his physical conditioning and I think he has done a really good job so far with it."

Good times ahead - can’t wait. Never been this excited about a young team with so much potential. Our young team - Yeah!

Been using this one for 40 years and another I made up myself. It goes, should ever I engage in a battle of wits and I find I am half a wit short, you'll be the first I'll call!

Noticed in that article about Sua that he mentions Milf wants to become an elite halfback... may have been a slip of the tongue or could be Milf wearing the 7 this year

I noticed that as well. Time will tell.

Might as well, he makes a better seven and Kodi makes a better six.

I doubt it will matter anyway. Seibold used Cody Walker last year as the first reciever which is traditionally the halfbacks role.

A lot of the time Reynolds was out the back in a high pressure situation feeding the ball to the centre, fullback or winger.

Seibold is probably thinking that Milf will have Walkers role and Nikorima will be in Reynolds place.

The only spanner in the works is our kicking game. If Nikorima or Milford can't produce the standard of kicking that someone like Adam Reynolds can, Seibold may see that as a reason to play someone like O'Sullivan

Milford had an elite kicking game in the second half of last year.

When was the last time someone went back and looked at a 2014 thread on “Possible Broncos Line-up in 5 Years Time”? I bet it’s great.
