NEWS Monday Buzz: Brisbane’s No.1 problem won’t go away

Was it not reported that the power Bennett held at the club was one of the key reasons they decided not to renew his contract? Further to that was it also not reported that it was Bennett’s pushing and machinations for Boyd to get the 4 year contract that convinced them that last new needed to be his last?
Mmmm, it really doesn't matter what is reported does it. Power belongs to few and it's a nebulous thing. Bennett had the respect of many and during his first stint he did weild great power and influence, so much so he was ultimately usurped. When he came back the Broncos were never going to let that situation return. No, he didn't have great power but was still respected. No matter what agenda a person has or what narrative they wish to spin Bennett wasn't responsible for the business decisions of the Broncos. Anything else is a flight of fancy.

You keep repeating that Bennett has limited power at the club like it’s a fact. Yet you also state that it doesn’t matter what’s reported.
This means that it currently seems to me that either you are privy to inside knowledge about the club, have seen it reported somewhere even though you state it doesn’t matter, or you are just making it up based on personal speculation.

Please inform me on where your knowledge of Bennett’s influence at the broncos comes from.

I have no agenda against Bennett, I like Bennett and has said so many times. The fact that you keep trying to paint people ‘anti-Bennett’ just because they question something is disappointing and adds nothing to the debate.

All I can go by is what is reported and not disputed. Unfortunately I do not have any inside sources so can only go by reports.

Old mate I tend to disagree with you about this. There was an interview with Bennett that aired in the last couple of days (I think on the Sunday Footy Show) about his relationship with Boyd. He was talking about coming back to Brisbane from Newcastle and he related a conversation with Boyd where he told him that he was going back to Brisbane and WB asked him what he was doing, and Boyd said going with you coach. WB then said words to the effect, and I got that done and he came back to Brisbane.

I can tell you that a friend of mine who is friends with a member of broncos inner circle management may have slipped that WB drove a very persuasive sales pitch to get Boyd's 4yr contract signed and they later blamed WB for talking them into it. Take that how you will. For the record I think WB was one of the greatest coaches of all time but adopts a completely different style to most other coaches which is why teams he assembles don't pass on well to other coaches. FWIW, all respect to the effort and accomplishments Boyd put in over the years but it's time to punch out before he totally destroys his legacy. Since we are in a development year may as well change the fb too as it might take a few experiments to get it right. Obviously start with Bird.

Putting this 100% on Wayne is fucking retarded.

Hindsight is 20/20... but Boyd was one of the best fullbacks in the game when he was extended.

As far as I can tell nobody is putting it 100% on Bennett. But it's pretty clear he would have had a big say in it. This is a bloke who historically speaking doesn't give long contracts to ageing players.

Mmm, sorry. I don't see the point. Anyway, we should all agree we don't know exactly how much influence he had but claiming credit for getting Boyd over to the Broncos is hardly evidence he called the shots!

Agreed, if you could just point out where someone has 100% put this on Bennett or stop making these sweeping generalised comments that would be awesome.

Scary to think Boyd was chosen over Slater for origin a few years back
He should have taken a leaf out of Slaters book and retired somewhere near the top. Instead he is trying to take a leaf out of the Cameron Smith book of longevity and he has been found wanting.

In his defence, I doubt even Darius expected his form to fall off this much and this quickly. He came in to the season talking about how good he felt and how fit he was, now within 2 months people are begging him to retire, it's gotta be a lot to take in.

I'd say the most realistic scenario with Darius is he gets the remainder of this season at Fullback regardless of form, he'll also get the start of next season (If he chooses to go around again), but I'd say the hammer will drop if he's displaying similar tendencies early next season as he is this season, and Seibold will give him the tap.

Yet he has three years to run on his $800,000-a-season Broncos contract. It was a MASSIVE MISTAKE by Wayne Bennett to sign him for that length of time.

It’s in the article.

Ha ha ha, it was in the article, **** , it MUST BE TRUE BECAUSE IT'S IN WORDS AND EVERYTHING. WB owns the Bronco, runs the whole show and does the payroll. He also mows all the lawns. It must be true because it's in the wordy things.

That's just wrong though. He was god awful in 2017 when he was extended, and he was injured.

Signing a player whilst injured, like we did with Boyd and Gillett is like negotiating buying a house, the house burns down, but then still buying it anyway...

You may be right but what happens with his salary? You can give someone the tap to let them go but you can’t just tap away their salary. There is no way any other club will pick him up like nikorima. We would have to play for nearly 2 years effectively about 800k or whatever it is under the cap which would be a major disadvantage.

Think the most reasonable course of action is to bring him in closer, try a new position. I'd say "Boydy old bean, need you to come forward to centre. If that doesn't work I'm going to put you into lock, if that doesn't work I'm shifting you to starting front row. Make centre work, okay?"
