NRL Players and family members in hot water

the disadvantaged young men

How are they disadvantaged? These blokes are generally not the sharpest tools in the shed. If they weren't good at hitting other blokes, run fast or do things with a pigskin, they'd mostly be on worksites getting labour wages. Instead, they are earning a hundred thousand dollars a year minimum. Yes, sure it comes at a physical cost but so does working on tools.

I think @theshed was meaning their backgrounds not current pay.

disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

Bennett seemed to have had a pretty big shift in attitude after Alex Mckinnion. He always supported his players but after that he seemed to be more about providing good lives to young men from troubled backgrounds, and making sure they are getting as much from the game emotionally and financially as possible. He seems like he no longer cares about on field legacy and cares far more about how many young men he can assist to take full advantage of the opportunities the NRL provides off of the field with little regard to what happens on it.

Really this might make him an even better bloke than I once considered him but it does not make for a successful team culture or foster on field success. It’s a nightmare to front office and a headache for fans. Can’t say I blame him though, how many players must he have witnessed be chewed up and spat out from the intrinsic harshness of professional sport. He has witnessed himself and players be consistently trashed by unethical media, and knows better than anyone the fickleness of fans. Why wouldn’t you try to rinse the system for all that you can for yourself and the disadvantaged young men who everyone turns their backs on the second they stop playing well.

because I am a fan of the sport and want our team to do well, I’m very glad Bennett left but in playing devils advocate, if I put myself in a players shoes and think of the NRL as just another job, i can appreciate him from this perspective.
You may well be right, but I highly doubt it.
If that was indeed his priority, why wouldn't he look at the opportunity offered to him to run the Broncos Football Dept, where he could truly excel and have an even greater influence on what happens with/to these young men than as the head coach?

because he’s still Bennett. Huge ego within the game.

It will be. It’s hard to truly measure the man TBH. He has kids that he needs to leave behind a relative fortune to fund their lifestyle beyond their life’s, if he’s being honest. I can’t have an issue with what he’s doing here. But I do think it’s a case of emptor caveat.
Aha, interesting application of the proverb... 😉
Certainly apt!

Walker has been given a 2 match suspension and a suspended 15k fine

Rabbitohs hit with a 20k fine for not reporting the incident

Bennett not given any penalty

Weak... I'm ok with Cody's suspension, but Souths should've copped a huge fine for not informing the integrity unit of the issue.

It's basically green lighting the withholding of information by clubs, because even if we catch you we'll only give you a slap on the wrist anyway.

$20k is nothing for Cody on his own let alone a club that the NRL give $13 million to annually

So NRL business as usual.

Rusty to appeal the Walker suspension and fine because he has seen worse violence at Woolworths over toilet paper. Why do I get the feeling he's telling the truth?

And he reckons Bennett did the right thing by keeping it a secret and looking after his player.

Souths' head has swelled up to the point that they think they can do what they like, I think the wheels are gonna fall off at some point.

Who do they think they are? The Storm?

Kick them out.
We tried that last time, ended up with bogans protesting and stars jumping on the bandwagon to saving a club no one gave two shits about for years to even get to games.
