Dobbo reporting a 3 hour Zoom meeting has just finished between TPJ and the board. Most likely outcome is a revised 1 year contract to stay in Brisbane at a much reduced rate than his current contract value.

Lockyer left the meeting refusing to comment, other than to say "the process is ongoing".
I know you're only the messenger but I just cant see how that's possible in the salary cap world.

He either gets sacked and finds a new contract or he stays on under his current contract.

What he's suggesting is effectively being sacked from his contract, but then instantly re-signed by the same club under a revised lower salary contract.

Rorters will have a field day under those conditions

Yeah you're right. I just read that the NRL would most certainly frown upon such a situation if it were true that the board is proposing such a scenario. Still, 2020 has thrown up so many curveballs so far, who knows what the hell is likely to happen.

Why does it have to be black and white?
Consider it a lifeline.
They come out and tell TPJ they have everything they need to sack him on the spot, but are willing to give him one more chance under new circumstances. Contract is revised, new clauses added, everybody is happy.

I am not sure there are any laws or rules in place regarding renegotiation's of a contract based on certain circumstances.
As far as the Rorters having a field day with these conditions, they would first need a player to repeatedly break the rules and be on the verge of having his NRL registration torn up before they could exploit this.

I dont know the legalities around NRL contracts to make a call on this mind you, i just assume that under certain circumstances contracts can be flexible to an extent.

Or they rip up his contract to create the new one and he goes, 'Na jokez, thanks guys, I'm off to the Roosters. Laterz!' Before signing the new one.

If this is true what is the issue? If he accepts it he clearly wants to stay and will be motivated to play well/not be a dick to get a good contract again. I hate this board as much as anyone but I am not going to kick them for actually doing something well.

A great forward taking up less money who has incentive to do well? Oh no how awful...

How would that make sense? If the whole goal was to get out of his contract all he had to do was not show up to his zoom interview and his contract would have been torn up.

My only concern is that he can negotiate with other clubs come November 1 this year. So if he comes out in 2021 and plays the house down, we will be desperate to keep him, only now we’re back to square 1 but this time, have to renegotiate and compete with other clubs.

Just my observation, but more and more lately he doesn’t seem like a man of strong honour, so I suspect he wouldn’t feel obliged to pay the club back either.

I should also note, I don’t have the solution, just a bit of a thought more than anything else really.

Does nobody else work in a corporate environment here? You don’t need to tear up contracts and then push new ones; you can easily make “amendments” to existing contracts that overwrite/add/update certain clauses.
Unless they are outright sacking him today, I think that is the most logical approach the Board is taking. However with the way this joke of a ASX organisation is run, I’m not sure normal rules apply here!😂

Would be a Deed of Variation I would think.

I am all for it, it allows the club to give him a bit of an olive branch and if he does get a better offer and runs, guys like Bullemor, Riki and Piakora are one year further developed and hopefully more ready for the rigours of day in, day out first grade.

What’s stopping him from having his contract cut and getting a new contract, except with us instead of an opposition team? Why can’t a team benefit from actually taking a players bad behaviour seriously for once? I like it

Yeah as big a tool as TPJ seems to come across as, IF he can pull his head in, and whoever the next coach is can extract his undoubted potential (minus the brain fades and associated suspensions), he is surely worth more to us playing for our team, rather than against our team, no?

We must be careful not to cut off our nose just to spite our face.

The board will make their final decision on Monday as they want to deliberate over the weekend. Currently Lockyer and Tony Joseph want TPJ to remain, whereas other board members Karl Morris and Neil Monaghan are of the opposing view and believe his contract should be torn up.

Please note, this is from a Badel article so cannot guarantee validity.

The year is 2028, TPJ is playing in Super League (but not playing, he’s serving a 4 week suspension for a swinging arm), people are still talking about his ‘potential’.

Spot on, if both parties agree, contracts can be amended/modified and regularly are

If it true he is getting a highly reduced one year deal I see this as a major win for the club..
1. We save dollars
2. Not losing a potential x factor
3. Might fix his attitude, and send a message to others at the same time (if he has a poor attitude later he won't get picked, they won't bother tearing up his contract. This would be worse for him, meaning his next contract would be much, much less.. in other words, he's stuck playing for his contract and NRL future)
