NEWS Cameron Smith announces retirement

Has anyone seen or heard of Webster since he dared to question the Great Man in print?
Vlandys isn’t such a bad bloke, it was just a simple misunderstanding.
He smoothed things over, even took him to his boot maker as a gesture of goodwill.

Truthfully, he's also diminishing the value of himself to whichever club signs him up too because a big part of signing Smith is what he brings to the club commercially in driving interest, hype, memberships and corporate dollars, and the fact he's basically skipped the whole preseason where clubs would have been in hyperdrive with all that sort of stuff (well, every club except ours apparently) and the fact that Smith couldn't be part of any of that takes away a reasonable part of the value of signing him up in the first place.
Until you get to retirement you just cannot know how you will approach it.
I'm there now and have been struggling so much more with the decision than I thought.
When you are young you think it's going to be easy but believe me it is the most difficult decision I've ever had to make.
So far I'm still procrastinating 9 months after I thought I would be be retired

I get that but it is a lot different to Cameron Smith retiring who can take his pick at many high paying avenues such as media, coaching, speaker circuit, football admin or even still playing than the average 9-5 Joe.

He is hardly the first elite sportsman to reach this hurdle but he seems to be handling it worse than anyone else i can think of.

Why would anyone retire? I’ve had period of a month or 2 without work and feel useless by week 3.

I get winding down a bit but completely retiring sounds like a recipe for depression.

Because you are in your 70's with a shit load of super and you want to enjoy your last ~10 years doing what you want?

I get it, I just think “doing what you want” is overrated when it comes to mental health.

So what's your plan, keep heading into the office until you keel over?

Agree that retiring without any thought about what you are going to do the next day is not good but have seen many successful retirements in my career of people who have spent time with grandkids, travelled around Australia, are ticking off their fishing bucket list, working on old cars, one guy followed the formula 1 circuit around for a year etc

I don't begrudge him or yourself taking their time, not in the slightest. I think in his case ego probably plays a bit of a role, but I do believe deep down this is probably a bloody hard call to make for him.

I'm simply pointing out that the longer he takes to make it, the less good reasons a club has to even want to make it happen as so much of what he brings to the table is about improving team culture and professionalism and driving corporate and membership dollars, and the less and less of preseason he gets involved in before making a call either way, the less he can help his prospective club do either of those things.

The broncos hierarchy are just as indecisive. They can't decide between ruling out signing him and continuing to let him play them.
One of the reasons we are in this current mess.

How so? Kevvie and the club are getting on with business.. Smith happens to be geographically close & the Broncos are keen if he is but they’re not jumping at shadows

7:30pm Friday Night.
Parramatta have run out onto the field and are waiting. The Parramatta players limber up as they anticipate an easy win to start the season.

The lights darken... silence over takes Suncorp.

*BAM* Fireworks go up in unison.... as Cam Smith runs out onto the field in a Broncos jersey to 'Simply the Best' louder than its ever been played.

Broncos win 40-8.
