Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

It has already been mentioned on here but B.Smith likely to stay in Melbourne for 2022. Amazing isn't it, a proven player, an international number 9 who is not the preferred option at his club has no one his manager is talking to. Meanwhile, our unproven, even at reserve grade level, fullback has clubs chasing him and signs with the Warriors on a ridiculous deal. Our 50% elite centre is fielding offers of up to a million dollars and other wooden spoon winning kids in Coates and Dearden are being pursued by all and sundry. Plus our latest unproven second row prodigy is being offered 500k+ by a desperate club.

However, this international hooker who is (at worst) very good in a position of need at almost every club is not even getting offers according to his manager. Anyone else see something wrong at all here?
B Smith is going to be a flop at another club. He will join the long list of average players who get made look better by the Storm superior system.

I'm not saying he isn't an NRL quality hooker, but the love he gets(Mostly because of his cult like status with the cheese) is way over the top compared to his skill level. He's also not an 80min hooker, so wherever he signs will need to carry someone in the 17 who can spend 20-30mins at hooker.

This could well be true but is not the point of my post at all. The point is, he is a proven first-grader who is a NZ international. Yet our club cops the ridiculous offers.

I see what you are saying and it is understandable reasoning but none of these guys seem to have been signed on under what other clubs were offering. So the reasoning doesn’t seem to apply here, not because it isn’t logical, simply because it doesn’t look like it happened that way.

If you are signing players at or above market value, which is what has seemingly happened here, then the PO really is of absolutely no value to the club, it gives all the power to the player. No wonder agents would be gunning for them if a club is stupid enough to do it without thought.

One other thing is, if you are going to offer a PO, surely you have it written in a contract that if you leave, even after accepting the PO, you are not entitled to and don’t get paid anything. Obviously I’m referring to the stupidity that is the Bird situation this year.

Our offer to Bird was initially reported as the middle offer. under the Knight's reported $1.1 million a year ... although as the weeks and years went on, the media kept raising what we were supposedly paying him

in regards to the bolded. Normally you don't need to write that into a contract, you just stay strong and tell the player (Bird) they can leave if the want, but the club won't be paying a cent.

sign him right now ... since you've been wrong about everything else you have said lately, this means B. Smith is likely to be a gun

It's the media reporting. Nobody cares about the Storm unless it's mentioning the salary cap, or a new tackling style.

Broncos are the Donald Trump of sports media. Negative sells.

Yeah I forgot about a shitty Kennedy offload. Better sign up an average player on overs, it fits our recruitment plan of the last 5 years.

i think it is more to the point that so far the Storm haven't accepted any of the player swap options proposed for Smith to be released. until that happens of course clubs won't waste their time negotiating with Smith (they're probably not allowed to make an official offer anyway until November without the Storm giving them permission)

Yeah I get all of that and it seems to me our club has finally started to learn that offering POs like chocolate doesn't end well.

As for said bolded bit, if the Bird and Seibold contracts have taught us anything, putting things in writing IS essential and IS the lesson they need to take away.

Has anyone been watching the Brooks to Cowboys rumours? Maybe this is because Dearden has told them he is staying in Brisbane? I read something else about Clifford trying to back out of his Knights deal too to stay at the Cows...

Why would he stay here when we won’t play him?

Why would he stay here when we won’t play him?
Milf is on contract, maybe he won't be re-signed. That'd open up a spot in the halves next year and give him the year to develop further in ISC. He could also come in this year to cover injuries/utility role if needed.

Why would he stay here when we won’t play him?

because Kevvie would have absolutely communicated his plans to Dearden explaining it's in his own best interest to be developed properly, rather than thrown in out of "desperation"

and if he isn't prepared to take the time to develop properly, then is isn't the player we need anyway ... so who cares if he leaves

I'm really feeling that we should make a play for Hammer. I mean, Isaako looked really promising finally last start but this kid has real x-factor about him. He wouldn't break the bank and if he doesn't come along, we at worst have a decent depth back and can go after Brimson or whoever in a season or two. If he does come on, well we have an out and out gun.

Wouldnt cobbo come into calculations for next year?

You would like to think so yep but again, I don't think Hammer will be expensive and competition for spots is never a bad thing.

Will be interesting at the end of the year to see who is chasing him
