OFFICIAL Xavier Coates Leaves Broncos

This club has no loyalty to its players. The overarching narrative right now is to bring in a broom and siphon in fresh blood from other clubs. The atmosphere amongst fans is caustic and cruel. Take a look at the sheer assholery and lack of decency in this thread.

That's one of the reasons he's leaving. Actually, it's THE reason.

Since 1988 this club has never endured any sort of sustained period of failure, I mean real failure (not the kind of failure where we just miss the 8). It's just an expectation that Brisbane will make the finals, as if it's a god given right that we do make the finals.

Some people don't really know how to deal with it.

How does the club fix that? There was a time when it meant something to be a 1 club player, and to be loyal to the club that gave you your shot.
I also think the assholery (awesome word, using it from here on out) is because of the lack of loyalty from players.

I agree that the club needs to do its part and show loyalty to the players as well, but from what i see, we offered Coates a fully reasonable contract and he left anyway.
Loyalty can’t be bought or taught, not in the true sense of the word. Loyalty has to be earned and it takes time with right decisions.
Unfortunately, our club started to hit the skids when WB decided to sneak off into the night to the Roosters. Club should have pissed him off and when the time arose grabbed CB with both hands. Hard to expect players to remain loyal when you consider our history in handling our coaching staff. The way Ivan, Anthony (they gave me the arse) WB, Anthony 2 - not to mention Jason and Ben. came and went is comical if it wasn’t so disastrous. Something Kevin would have on his mind knowing he wasn’t first pick with our current situation.
This is not a club to preach loyalty and won’t be for some time.

I'm wrong all the time. Everything I state is an opinion, would you like me to add an *IMO* after every opinion I make? Would that make you feel less threatened?

In my opinion Coates will be a winger for his career, as he has shown no skills of a centre, and all his best attributes are of a winger, basically a Daniel Tupou with a higher ceiling.

Kennedy has proven me wrong this year, I'd consider him a viable squad member now, still wouldn't make my playing 17 at most clubs, but he's no longer in my calculations for worst player in the NRL.

Soooo I like the fact you've made a passionate and long-winded post, while being completely wrong. Would you like some tips on never being wrong? I do like you complain about me making definitive statement, and then you make one about 35yr olds never getting certain jobs, when they clearly do.
No, most people recognise an opinion or when someone is simply stating theirs. It's just you leave no room and state everything as if it's fact. It isn't neccessary to write imo after every statement because people are smart enough to figure it out. Words like 'I think' 'I feel' 'I believe' that he'll be a career winger or he's the worst player in the NRL go a long way to tipping people off.

When you mature you will come to understand what I mean and why it's important. What I referred to earlier about 35 year olds and evidence are the jobs which require a mature mind with which to weigh the evidence. Those sorts of jobs are obviously in the judiciary. They don't give those jobs to know alls who believe they're infallible or certainly act as if that's the case.

To lead a nation or to rule on people's fates require a mind much more seasoned. Sadly, both fields can still be corrupted but still, no one puts a 35 year old in charge. In my own case I too was like you, so so fucking certain I knew it all but I've come to understand how little I know about the world and how much more there is to learn. If you take my words as a criticism, you're right but it's more than that. It's advice to maybe take a step back and see if there can be any truth in them. Should you do so you may have grown just a little.

Just shows how full of shit these blokes in the media are, 2 weeks ago Reynolds was signed at Cronulla, they wouldn't entertain the possibility of him moving to Brisbane

I like 99% of this post, all except the timeline. Your starting point. I know it's only your opinion but you cannot truly declare, hand on heart that you know everything that happened in the back rooms before WB spoke to the Roosters and neither can I. We can only know the superficial and the rest is guesswork. I'm not being critical of you here, I'm only saying it appears to you it started with WB but I don't think it's the case. I believe shit was happening for some time prior.

This is what i mean as well Mchunt, and the exact same thing applies to Dearden.

This profession of love for the club, and supposed dedication to making things right, only to turn around and take a huge steaming shit on the club by defecting to our most hated enemy.

**** Coates, he is a dog and any assholery is warranted.
If he came out and was honest from the start, this shit wouldnt hit home so hard, but to give the fans and the club hope, then tear it down and defect to the fucking Storm is unforgivable.

The only bloke to commit so far is Staggs, he gets a huge rap from me for actually sticking by his word.

I don't like seeing fans personally badmouth our players for doing something that's common practice. As for swearing allegiance to the club, I'm sure he meant it at the time, but like your feelings on him, people change their opinions as circumstances change. In his case, that's the treatment of his best mate Tom Dearden. I presume he imagined he and Tom being a team within the team and looked forward to that combo scoring many tries. When Dearden was ousted - and yes it was an ousting - I suspected Xavier would follow, but hoped he wouldn't. And sure enough he did.

We'd be a much healthier club if we simply wished him all the best, and left the door open for him maybe returning one day. Like many players have done in the past. Hodges, as just one example.

I don't see anything to be gained by being vengeful and petty. Like I keep saying, he's doing nothing wrong other than hurting some fan's hopes and dreams. We have to forgive him for that. It will make our club more appealing, rather than toxic and spiteful.

If you notice the other players are doing exactly that. Not carrying on like prima donnas.

if that trade happens @Sproj may just cream his pants 😛

It would be a dream result for sure.

On another note, I’m really enjoying the conversation in this thread about loyalty, etc and honestly I agree with both sides of the debate.

I totally understand why Coates has gone and if I were him I’d make the same decision and it breaks my heart to say that but to go into that system is just too good an opportunity to pass up.

I also hate it from the club’s point of view as we did stick with him while he was raw and other options could have been used. Now he’s becoming one of the best singers in the comp (even if not there yet), he’s been poached by the best team in the comp.

It hurts because financially our hands are tied due to being held back by a salary cap and there being no benefit to developing players.

At the same time, we have only ourselves to blame, if we didn’t bring on our own demise, if we managed things so much better than we have over the last decade, Coates, Fifita, Walker, Walsh all might still be here, at least some of them.

We sacrificed experience for youth and now we’ve lost both and still have an unbalanced salary cap.

It’s a mess and while I’m gutted he has gone, I get it and hopefully after all this pain, the needed changes off field will happen and we can start to build on a foundation Kevvie is starting to build on field.

@Sproj is still non compus mentis in a darkend room clutching a picture of Coates and listening to Joy Division's 'Love will tear us apart' on repeat.

That’s oddly specific and accurate, are you watching me??

Umm... Why did WB entertain the Roosters again???

It's not like he was out chasing better offers? You have a guy on a handshake agreement for 20 years and then all of a sudden change it? If that was you in your employment, honestly, how the **** would you interpret that?

True. We are the most insufferably entitled fans in the NRL. No one else is even close. We expect to pick the eyes out of every other team, and have them grateful just to wear our jersey. We tire of our own senior players, treat like them like refuse, and mercilessly dump on others who leave.

We would be kidding ourselves if we think our club didn't rort the salary cap through third party payments during our glory years. We are like the USA of the NRL.

I know Dobbo lives in a total fantasy land but damn this would be a good outcome for us if all this is true. Lodge has been great but that price tag and the balance of the team hangs over his head.

1. Isaako / Hynes
2. Oates
3. Gagai
4. Staggs
5. Farnworth
6. Johnson
7. Reynolds
8. Flegler
9. Turpin
10. Haas
11. Riki / import
12. TPJ
13. Carrigan

14. Bench hooker
15. Kennedy
16. Piakura
17. Robati / import
I should add, Dobbo reckons Herbie will go to fullback. JI to wing.

don’t see the need to offload lodge, and the thing that makes it worse is that we will prob be paying 300-400k for a few seasons..
We have the money left from:
Walsh
Dearden
Bird
Macca
Coates
Offa
Milford
Glenn
Now Lodge?
+ heap of players who won’t be re-signed ie Croft.
Sure we are going after some blokes, and we will need to pay overs but we should be well cashed up for 2022.
I’d be going after Dufty, Reynolds, Gags and capewell right away.
Id also be looking to upgrade + extend Haas as soon as possible. I’d be tempted to try and lock him up for a 10yr deal. He is that good.
Finally, I hope we chuck 800-900k a season at S.Walker. From all reports he won’t leave Bondi, and that’s fine, but let’s get it out in the media that we are going to offer him a ‘‘can’t refuse’ type deal.
Imagine Reynolds and Walker as our halves pairing!

I believe shit was happening for some time prior.
Agree with this. Reasons for him shooting through no doubt. Loyalty is often in the eye of the beholder - super coach or not.
