OFFICIAL Xavier Coates Leaves Broncos

There's a common misconception that the salary cap is there to 'even up' the competition. What it's actually there for is to make sure clubs don't go broke by over-spending on players. Some clubs could afford to pay for the salary cap out of their own earnings but you just wouldn't have a competition.

That's it really and yes there's plenty of flaws to it.

Since V'landys assumed the role of Chairman of the Comission, six head coaches have lost their jobs. It's difficult to build a club when coaches have to pick up the pieces and attempt to sell free agents on a vision when in all likelihood they won't be around to see the entire term of it.

I honestly wonder where the next crop of coaches are going to come from?

Donaghy is right when he says there's no reward for developing talent in the NRL. If they go ahead with a national reserve grade and U/21 competition then they have to fix that otherwise they're not going to draw anywhere near enough interest. Why bother watching all three grades knowing full and well that the best players will just end up playing for teams you hate?
I hate it, I would rather the more pure system of sink or swim no cap, most of the NRL teams are running negative even with the salary cap so does it really work that well?

If I were to make a change this would probably be it.

I would probably give the team a chance to build with minimal changes and if Coates attitude is good he can stay, but my tolerance for a bad performance would be minimal. If he has a bad game he’s out and another young player gets a chance.

I’m not sure how Niu’s been going in ISC but if he’s doing the basics well I would be tempted to bring him in at fullback and shift Isaako to Coates wing.
Keep your eye on the Magpies number 1. That's Niu.

Still think he'd be an upgrade on Isaako?

If you effectively told the NRL to save their $160,000,000~ a season clubs would go broke because they wouldn't be able to afford the $10,000,000. Less teams means less games for television networks and that's the lifeblood of the competition.

Most of the clubs are funded by their leagues clubs and massive ones like the Panthers basically have unlimited budget, you take the cap away the same scenario will occur but they will have to actually run their club like a business rather then baby fed handout.

The same scenario wouldn't occur, clubs would send themselves broke trying to compete in the new player market and the code would suffer as a result. Even the successful clubs would fall prey if their mismanaged (like the Broncos have been).

Most of them lasted 80 years of no salary cap well, so I'm sure they can manage in modern times.

What's to stop the NRL from still investing this money back into clubs, without a salary cap?

Perfect time actually considering how much they have had to scale back there spending.
And you're asking them to incur expenses they can't afford to help attract a market that's dwindled in recent times and wasn't enough to support most franchises to begin with.

How do you spread the money in a fair and even way in an unlimited salary cap era where the richest clubs set the pace? Sure the NRL could prop up a few clubs but it would defeat the purpose.

Let's say you give them $10,000,000 as a base salary cap so they at least have some money to spend. Fantastic, but the top clubs are operating at a $20,000,000 cap. What's this? THe majority of the competition can't compete and those that try are going to put themselves in a hole just to stand a chance. Suddenly all the sponsors are flocking to only a quarter of the competition and the struggling clubs have to offer bad rates just to get any financial stability.

I'm not saying it can't ever happen, but the competition isn't ready for it and it remains to be seen when it will be.

It's only been a professional code for 30 years when the salary cap was first brought in.
They are all businesses, the fact is they should know how it runs.

I wouldnt cut the money over night but i dont think it is unrealistic for clubs to be able to cover there top 30 in 15 years time,i wouldnt just take the money away from them either rather than give them the cap money for the top 30 it could be redirected
To junior developement.if there are too many clubs in a market perhaps its time to let a few go and let the market decide which it is.

Are the "points" public?
Yes

It's all representative based.

For last year's competition:

Points will be allocated for representative achievements for the past two seasons with a maximum of 10 points earned for the highest level reached.

In changes to last year's cap system, clubs will not be required to spend a minimum of 120 points.

Each club will be allowed to sign 22 players whose value totals a maximum of 160 points, with a player worth:

  • 10 points if they represented a Tier 1 country against a Tier 1 country (Jillaroos or Kiwi Ferns) in 2019;
  • 8 points if they played State of Origin for NSW or Queensland in 2019;
  • 6 points if they played in the if they represented a Tier 1 country against a Tier 1 country (Jillaroos or Kiwi Ferns) in 2018;
  • 4 points if they represented a Tier 1 country against a Tier 2 country in 2019;
  • 4 points if they played State of Origin for NSW or Queensland in 2018;
  • 4 points if they represented the PM’s XIII in 2019;
  • 3 points if they played at the 2019 National Championships;
  • 2 points if they represented the PM’s XIII in 2018.
You can't hide player values with these rules, only really if they no longer fall under a category time wise ie 2017 or earlier. Even an Origin player from 2018 like Rhiannon Revell-Blair who played Origin at 17 was still worth 4 points two years later and didn't even play NRLW in any of the three years the comp has been going. So it can go both ways of overvaluing one-off rep players and undervaluing previous or unselected ones though but could also limit ‘underspending’ on good players as they’re worth a set points value no matter what, depending on the below.

How that points value correlates to salary will be the big point with players and the RLPA, whether it’s a set amount per tier and/or every player in that tier gets the same, or salaries are irrelevant so long as teams stick to the points cap.

Well you haven't really said anything, you've just questioned me.

So sit down and learn, boy.

What part of his game makes you think Coates will be a centre? He will be a career long winger
You're a prime example of the immature. You make these definitive statements. You're utterly convinced you just cannot be wrong.
No qualification, no equivocation, absolute certainty. You just know you're right.

You declare that Coates will be a career winger. That's it. Done and dusted. In your mind there's no possibility he can ever play any other position AND you know the future.
It's like back late last year. Kennedy is the worst player in the NRL. The worst. No doubt in your mind.

You'd think after all the times you've been wrong in the past, the many many times you'd learn but no, still you're convinced you're infallible. Even when you've been proven wrong you blunder on, completely dodging the evidence. Pretending it didn't happen.

That's why 35 year olds are never given jobs where they have to consider the evidence, generally they just don't have the humility and the wisdom to do the job. Sure, there's wise old heads on some 35 year olds but they listened to the wiser, they realised and accepted they can be wrong and they don't make incontrovertible statements.
