OFFICIAL Xavier Coates Leaves Broncos

I've seen what a lot of people would do(replace more than half the squad), and I think it's completely unrealistic, so when I say below I think it's actually a chance.

2022 - As we are already trying to offload Lodge, and Penrith and Roosters are both chasing him, I'd be only letting him go as a trade for Manu or Staines, with the mind of playing either of them at 1, they have both publicly stated they want to play 1, and won't do it at current clubs.
I'm looking at getting SJ on a 1-2 year deal on around 500k, I'm also not against Reynolds, as long as its no more than 600-700k and only for 2 years. I'd also be trying to get 1 of either Su'a or Capewell, but not both. And now we lost Coates, I'd probably try and get Gagai back if we can get him for around 400k, if not then go for Fergo/Rapana/Kris.

Fullback - Manu/Staines
Edge - Su'a/Capewell
Wing - Gagai/Fergo/Rapana/Kris
HB - SJ/Widdop

2023 - We need to offer a massive deal for Grant, I'd be happy with 1m+ for multiple years. I think he is a bloke you can build your team around. If we don't sign a decent 1 like I mention above, then we need to go hard for Ponga, behind our pack he would do even more than what he does for the Knights.

Of our current guys who are off contract I'm offering deals to Arthars and Gamble. Not offering a deal to Asiata, Glenn, Copley, Kennar or Levi. Undecided on Milford, Niu and Mead. Worth keeping around on cheap deals. Milford maximum 400k and the other blokes on close to min wage.

That’s actually a great answer and I think I agree with almost all of your suggestions.

My issue with Reynolds is that although fairly great at directing and building pressure, he doesn’t create points. If you put him and Staggs in the halves I have no idea where our points come from if not relying on individual brilliance.

Johnson should be a fair bit cheaper than Reynolds and sign a shorter contract. He has been one of the best in the league for try assists the last few seasons. I’m not sold on Gamble at all but if he can play the Peter Wallace role until
Something better comes along, Johnson could be a great 6 for us. It would be a cheap halves pairing too.

I never considered Joey Manu a realistic option, though he would be great. I guess with the emergence of Walker, and if Suaali gets a shot this year and is up for the task full time, the roosters may be keen to offload Joey.

For the sake of laying it out:

1. Manu
2. Oates
3. Farnworth
4. Staggs
5. Gagai
6. Johnson
7. Gamble
8. Flegler
9. Turpin
10. Haas
11. Capewell
12. TPJ
13. Carrigan

14. Riki
15. Bullimor
16. Kennedy
17. Piakura / Prop

**** this, these developments make it so hard for me to keep track of which team I hate the most.

The Roosters and their cap?
The Panthers and Cleary?
The Eels and Moses?
The Raiders and Sticky?
The Sharks and their (drugs, cap cheating, Rothfield)
The Cowboys and Feldt?
The Titans and their theft / NRL protection?

And now the Storm add another line in their monstrous tally.

Amusing how people are getting upset about how the Storm afforded him. We did it for 20 years, it’s just our turn

10 hours on I’m still pissed. Even though he has to look after himself, he was part of the club that gave us the spoon.

You don’t walk out on your mates; or the fans you apparently care about.

You fix the problem and you fix it together.

Storm always have to be number 1 or 2, for the amount of times they've screwed us over.
Roosters are also either 1 or 2 for me, due to their corruption.

It's tough to pick a team without knowing targets, and where Staggs is gonna play. I'd still have Isaako in the side, but at left centre or right wing. We also need a 14 that can cover 9 for 20mins, as I think Turpin is still only a 60min player. Hopefully Paix can be effective at that role next year after a full year in ISC.

The thing that annoys me most, and i don't know if anyone is to blame as such or its just dumb luck. But had Brisbane known that Coates, Walsh and Dearden were going to walk out on us we most likely pick one of them to offer big cash to and ensure we keep.

Maybe we should have just chosen one to concentrate on and get his signature and forget the rest?

Either way theoretically we now have 300k that was set aside for Dearden 200-300k that was for walsh and rhe 400-500k we had set for coates. Thats close to a million straight up for next year. Throw 600 at someone decent and then 200 each on two young guys and there's your three roster positions filled.

I hope Coates career divebombs from here on out the lowlife.

Part of the group that gave us our first spoon, professed his love of the club and even told the fans to stick with him and the club.
Signs with the dirtiest, shiftiest club in the league.

Welcome to the shit list Turncoates, i hope you blow both ACL's and both hammy's at the same time and never get picked for origin again.

I hope he gets boo'd relentlessly every time he plays at Suncorp.

Nah you know there is an article coming about how Bris has cap issues

I think it would be an interesting discussion about this, the grand final winning team manages to sign an up and coming SOO winger from a struggling club by offering LESS (yeah yeah we all know that isn't the reality), if the NRL were a competent competition, they would look into this but nope, there won't be a peep.

However, try and sign Karmichael Hunt on a cheap deal despite being out of the game for 12 years and old, nah we are looking into that one. Try and sign an All Black on minimum wage despite another club saying they couldn't afford his asking price, yep all good here.
At the very least teams shouldn't be able to sign players lower on the ladder for less than their current club is offering. Otherwise why have a salary cap?

I’d find it hard to believe that Smokin Joe new from day 1 that Coates and Dearden were gone without the club being aware it was most likely too. I think (hope) that each player was allocated an amount that the club deemed reasonable and they were willing to let them walk if the players wanted more. I think it was set aside a fair amount and try to convince them to stay based on that amount. The fact that Dearden and Walsh left doesn’t make Coates worth more money or vice versa. I like that the club may not be bending over out of desperation. Walsh still hurts the most for me; he is a spine player that we’ve needed so badly but I think what we offered was fair and Warriors just were willing to take a bigger risk.

I'd be willing to bet that the club knew, but still held onto hope that Kevvie could change their minds. but like you said, put a value on them ands stuck firm

Did Bennett drop Glen Lazarus when he signed with the Melbourne Storm, or did he help Brisbane win a Grand Final?
If you are going to play this game, compare apples with apples not oranges or tangerines. Lazarus was coming to the end of a long and decorated career at both Canberra and here. He was not a player we had put any time into developing. He had played here for 6 years and contributed to 3 grand final appearances. He was going to Melbourne for a payday to see him off into retirement.

Let us compare that to Coates, 20 years of age, someone we have put some time into developing. He has not contributed to the club's success, he in fact contributed to the club's first wooden spoon. He came out in social media saying he was a Bronco for life and urging all the fans to stick with us and he was going to stay etc. Until he fucked off to Melbourne a few weeks later.

If the club takes the view that it does not want to add to Coates' first grade experience which will only benefit the Storm, and instead want to allow someone who will be here to gain that experience, more power to them.

In summary, your analogy sucks.

Nah you know there is an article coming about how Bris has cap issues
Unless we were massively over the cap during the last few years, the only way we have cap issues is that we have way too much money to spend and nobody to spend it on. Yet.

We all probably knew heading into this season with the number of players we have off-contract that a few of them were going to leave the club. What hurts is when we see spine players like Simpkins and Walsh having big games for other clubs that really aren't that much better than us. Walker for the Roosters, that's not ideal either but you can appreciate where the Roosters are at and where we are at.

Losing a big name winger isn't the best feeling but if you had to find a player for one position that isn't going to dramatically change the way you play your footy, it'd be on the wing. We should be entering a situation where we have a bit of cash to throw around with all these players we haven't thrown the bank at to keep.

At the very least teams shouldn't be able to sign players lower on the ladder for less than their current club is offering. Otherwise why have a salary cap?

I don't agree with that, the reality is players will always want to go to teams going well. You will always stay there for less.

Remember Parker saying no to the Dogs for 100k less in 2000- just because you're not the Broncos. 21 years ago 100k was more than double his wage. I have no idea where the Broncos and Dogs were on the table when that offer was made but he still turned it down and that was how Brisbane negotiations went most times.

You can get 80k here but win premierships or 180k at the Bulldogs- stay thanks.
