State of Origin - Game 1 Discussion

I'm going to do Paul Green a favour and pick our next side. Hope they are fully fit. You're Welcome Paul

1 Ponga
2 Holmes
3 Opacic
4 Gagai
5 Hamiso-Fidow
6 Munster
7 Cherry-Evans
8 Papalii
9 Grant
10 Welch
11 Fa'asuamaleaui
12 Capewell
13 Arrow

14 Mahoney/Hunt
15 Fifita
16 Molo
17 Fotuaika

That back 5 has 4 players who can add a bit of x-factor and will give the grubs something to think about. Holmes and Gagai's records in origin speak for themselves. Ponga if fit is quality, Opacic is there basically because he will do a decent job and we dont really have any other centers playing that great in the NRL anyway. Hamiso is a bit of a wild card, but he is a freak and we dont really have anyone else like him.

Our 6 and 7 at the moment pick themselves, i'm not convinced we can swap either yet. Same with the forwards, we are a bit low on options really. Molo is a great bench forward, i think Fifita will have more impact from the bench and Fotuaika is pretty consistent and hasnt really played poorly for QLD. I think we need a backup hooker to give Grant a break. The only selection people will probably think is odd is Tino in the back row, but i've seen him there plenty and i think he could offer us something there.

Definitely.......happened last year......happened with "fatty's team".....been happening for years. As they say....on any given day, give us QLDr's half a chance and we'll usually take it.

NSW put it altogether on the field last night. They played particularly well. That said, it's not a gimme that they'll be able to do it again.....

We didnt test them. For as well as Turbo played, if he gets this roving role there could quite easily be gaps where he is playing if we are more on our game.

I'm going to just keep putting this down to Green being an absolutely useless ****. **** him off, we'll be right.

Got players coming through in all positions except the centres (that I know of, I'm sure @1910, @Smokin' Joe or @Big Pete will probably know of someone).
I'd say Xavier Coates is actually the most likely prospect coming through. Centre was his position coming through the grades but he's been serving his time on the wing as his apprenticeship. Otherwise, Cobbo would be the next big prospect coming through.

The wild card pick would be Ronaldo Mulitalo who actually came through as a centre but has found himself on the wings. Unfortunately injuries have hurt him, but there's a good player there if somebody could round off his edges.

There's a few junior centres running around but I wouldn't call any of them sensations, just good young prospects who could play NRL.

Don't disagree with much of that, but I would say that the titans have been trying Tino out in the back row at times this year and he doesn't quite look agile enough at the moment.

I daresay he has put on a bit of size since Melbourne converted him into a middle (I believe TIno was primarily a backrower in the juniors... pretty sure I've read on here that it was a backrow of Fifita and TIno).

If that's the case we probably have to keep Fifita in the starting back row... he was in full comfort mode last night, but he has shown at times this year that he can turn it on. What goes against him in origin is that Cleary is a good defensive halfback so he's not going to get any free runs.

So basically I would just switch Tino and Fifi around in your lineup... which gives us Tino back on the bench.

Molo I'm a little unsure of, but I daresay that final bench spot goes to whichever middle or backrower is performing the best at the time.

Yep basically exactly the team I would’ve named, though I’d probably start Mahoney and have Grant come on mid first half like he did last origin where he offers great impact.

A few player’s names could be thrown up instead of Hamiso-fidow, and to a less extent Opacic, and I wouldn’t argue too much, but they were who I first thought of too.

I think we need genuine centers for the next game tbh. I'm actually struggling to think of many decent wingers in for for QLD. Hammer just gives us that little bit more x-factor i feel. Good point about Mahoney, but he might not make the next game anyway so we would probably have to use Hunt as the backup hooker.

Did cross my mind about Tino not looking as agile as he used to, i just wasnt impressed with Fifitas effort last night, and he has been very inconsistent all year, Molo imo was the best bench prop going around last year and i think he's been decent when i've seen him this year.

Is Ponga back for the next game? Xavier Coates should be dropped to Q Cup, there isn't a single player worse than Felise Kaufusi out there when he's played for us and Joe Ofahengaue should never have been selected. David Fifita also needs to be told to step up or lose his spot for game 3.
1 AJ Brimson
2 Valentine Holmes
3 Kalyn Ponga
4 Dane Gagai
5 Kyle Feldt
6 Cameron Munster
7 Daly Cherry-Evans
8 Josh Papalii
9 Harry Grant
10 Cameron Welch
11 Kurt Capewell
12 David Fifita
13 Jai Arrow

14 Ben Hunt/Reed Mahoney
15 Moeaki Fotuaiki
16 Jaydn Su'a
17 Tino Fa'asuamaleaui

18 Reed Mahoney/Ben Hunt

Brimson is so overrated it's not even funny, outside of being a decent support player he offers absolutely nothing, especially in Origin.

I'd have Ponga at Fullback, Holmes at left centre (Playing similarly to how the Blues use Turbo, just roaming as a 2nd Fullback) and someone on the left wing that isn't Xavier Coates, I dunno, literally anyone. Corey Thompson if he's fit by Game 2, if not, Murray Tualagi.

Yeah I would agree about Brimson but it's slim pickings. Not sure how Holmes would go at centre but I'm sure he'd give it a go. Corey Oates, Corey Thompson or Corey Allan would be better options than Coates.

1 Kalyn Ponga
2 Valentine Holmes,
3 Brenko Lee/Kurt Mann could also be options I guess.
4 Dane Gagai
5 Kyle Feldt

1 Karmichael Hunt
2 Corey Oates
3 Israel Folau
4 Will Chambers
5 Valentine Holmes

Who says no? Apart from the QRL, the NRL, Catalans Dragons, the LGBTQ+ community and the half of BHQ who still care about State of Origin.

I wouldn't mind trying AJ in the centres. Its going to have to be a makeshift centre either way, and I'd rather him there than on the bench.
