What about Piakura's game makes you believe he could handle centre?
Has a good running game and the ability to make one on one tackles. I can see him doing quite well at jamming in on the opposition centre and shutting down a play.

I saw that we are paying him 400k a season, but with Capewell, Riki and Robati as contenders for the backrow positions I think we may have to look at fitting him in elsewhere for now.

Is Piakura more talented than Riki or TC? Considering the money he's been signed on, I assume he is? Still it might be hard to break into the NRL side.
He can sting in defence. Not just attack. I am liking what I’m seeing from Riki on that right edge though.

They’re all good, too early to say who’s the best.. Maybe they’re all good in different ways?

I’m convinced Willison is a gun and should eventually start at prop with Haas.

In the distant future if we play our cards right...

8. Payne Haas
9. Kobe Hetherington
10. Xavier Willison
11. Brendan Piakura
12. Jordan Riki
13. TC Robati

I think this would be pretty damaging. I’d be okay with releasing Carrigan and Flegler in order to keep these guys together.

Kobe could be good to keep as our starting 9 with the tactic of having an attacking hooker on the bench. (Paix/Walters/Jayden Nikorima/anyone)

Please stop suggesting Herbie for fullback. In my opinion he was the shittest player on that field last night and consistently has been. He is woeful playing as simple a position as centre. The bloke needs a **** more q-cup or he is just an english bust. Another thing to realise is that he is most likely going to **** off back to England when it suits cause he will claim he is homesick. I don’t think we give any Herbie promotions when he seriously struggles 70% of the games he plays. If we happen to get our hands on 2020 Brenko Lee and Staggs stays in the centre’s, than he ain’t playing it’s as simple as that, I’ve seen all I needed to see from him on the wing to know that’s not gonna be a good thing so he has nowhere else to go except sharpen up in cup. It’s his best option.

*Rant over*
Shit rant.

Piakura had a slow start to the season but was just beginning to warm into it when injuries and COVID restrictions took hold.

At this stage Robati and Riki are ahead but Piakura has the higher ceiling. Robati was playing really good footy for the Seagulls and was a real weapon for them down that right edge. Riki is still very raw and has a lot of catching up to do but he's a really good prospect. Back in 2019 when he was struggling to fit into the Devil's pack Smith had him playing as an outside back and he handled the assignment really well. It suggests to me he's a good athlete but just doesn't have the Footy IQ just yet.

Needs to learn how to work smarter, not harder.

Sounds like this Smith fella knows his stuff, at least when it comes to forwards. Worth getting him onboard?

I'm a fan, I think he's one of the best coaches outside of the NRL. I'd certainly put the offer out there but I'm not sure how desperate he is to get back into the NRL system. He's got unfinished business at the Devils and recently signed on till 2023 so I'm not sure if he's willing to give that up just to help a struggling club out.

I guess his cameo was about the same length, perhaps longer, than many highlight videos, so it checks out.
That effort where he made 3 tackles in a row was mighty fine.

It’s obvious that him and Haas will make a great front row pairing in the future.

Staggs rules out for the rest of the season high grade MCL 😢

p.s. long quotes from Ikin ... but not a single mention from him about us being over the cap ... mostly just defending our releases and talking about cap management in general terms.

Ben Ikin says:

“Matt’s payout gets amortised over the length of the existing deal, the NRL will allow that,” Ikin said.

“We felt based on what we had coming through, we could use the salary-cap space from Matt’s departure to help develop some of the great young forwards coming through.

“We have plans around how much money we’ve got and accept that it will be less than we could have had.

“There are several factors that can impact on what you are getting out of your $9.5 million.

“If you get into a situation where you don’t value players correctly, then effectively that can be seen as having less money in your cap.”

Ikin on speculation we should have stacks of cash after losing Milford

“Managing the cap is not a perfect science,” Ikin said.

“When Anthony Milford goes, for example, all people see is the price tag attached to Milford (he was on $1 million at the Broncos), not realising we have Adam Reynolds coming in.

“Matt Lodge might have gone, but Kurt Capewell will come into our squad next year.

“If you have a good group of senior players in the right positions, then you can get more out of your emerging talent than you may have been hoping for under the salary cap.

“We are trying to do everything better here. What’s true for the success of a footy team is true for the management of our salary cap.

“If you aren’t improving in this game, you are going backwards.”
