Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

What you are saying is exactly why we stuffed up under Seibold, too many young players with no development behind them. We have an element of fans who also just want to throw in any promising young player we get into the team. A good team can carry one or two, but you cant carry 5 or 6.
The big difference is leadership. Boyd had become the butt of jokes for his lack of effort and weird comments about trying too hard. Seibold was so hard up he had Patty captaining after 12 NRL games, along with Croft, Turpin and Glenn. At no point was our million dollar man Milford considered.

Fast forward to now, we have some serious captaincy firepower in Reynolds, Capewell, a rapidly maturing Carrigan (who will be the QLD captain within two years), Walsh and, more controversially, Haas. All want to be leaders and act like leaders.

The Smoothy signing is exactly how it should work. The standout Q Cup players should get contracts with the QLD NRL clubs. They’ve been playing with grownups and look good enough instead of dominating kids and going straight to the Warriors or some other club that ruins players.
He's also at a great age... I thought he was older and had been plodding around in Qcup for years, but he's only 23

I feel like our junior scouting is just finding the biggest and fastest kids.. they don't have to do much except run through other kids their age.

That can be fine, but we need to also ensure they can learn the game and then put the right programs around them to develop them properly.

It's like we think just getting the biggest and fastest kids automatically translates to NRL capable players without having to teach them anything.

Where would he fit into our team? Would he get first crack at hooker?
You'd imagine if we wanted him it would be for the 9 jersey.
You could play him like Queensland did this year with another 9 on the bench and move him into a roving type role or he could be a 70-80 minute hooker.
If he wanted to play there and come back home it probably puts us as a real premiership contender.

I dont know if its the case, but it seems like we do that at times.

I thought the same earlier in the year. Was there another bloke named Smoothy playing in the Q Cup?

In addition to blooding too any youngsters at once and a lack of leadership - I found that the club has previously not made 'the tough call' and stick with players just cause.

Nup, drop players that ought to be dropped.

I reckon 24 months ago, of in the same position as now, the club would have re-signed Turpin and kept Isaako.

I actually like Isaako but he does t have a place in this team.

I recommend watching Smoothy's game for the Storm in round 1 last year. He looked pretty close to NRL ready back then.

I was listening to Choc Mundine on Spanian’s podcast and he was talking about his stint at the broncos during the super league days. He was talking about how much he was getting paid a good amount for the era, $300k I think he said. But he said something else that I didn’t quite understand.

He was like “I shouldn’t say this but it was years ago now” and then went on to say he was secretly getting another $100k a season on a second contract. I couldn’t figure out who was implying gave him that money - the broncos or the super league organisation.

Also listened to this and I couldn't quite understand what he was getting at with who paid him the extra 100k.
He also said he played with Willie Carne in 97 but Carne finished at the Broncos in 96 so I think Mundine was confused himself.

You deserve credit for making it through listening to either of those two speak, geez that’s rough.

Funny you say that because I didn’t make it much further in than when they discussed his broncos stint. Which was about 1/4 of the way through
