I do think we should pay him for the record. Add another year too

TBH, that's the only way I'd be comfortable. I absolutely think we should pay the man, but he should throw us an extra year or two to make it happen. No interest in giving him an extra 100K only for him to go on the open market November next year.

I would love for a club to come out and say that we will upgrade a player's contract if they perform well but are adding clauses about poor behaviour and / or poor performance also leading to a considerable downgrade.

That really doesn’t matter, you can’t downgrade a player mid contract. Whatever they were originally being paid is always going to be on the books so regardless of whether that player sees the money or not we get absolutely zero benefit from it. Don’t expect that to ever happen either.

Players association hold to much power and anything they want they essentially get (within reason). So don’t expect your proposal to be a possibility ever.

I don’t expect to ever be anything, it was tongue in cheek. No one ever agree to it but just would be funny and a way for clubs to have a bit of power at the negotiating table. Imagine if you could sue historical poor performance, Anthony Milford look out!

Badel reporting that Carrigan's management have contacted Broncos management and will "hold urgent talks" seeking a pay rise after the season Carrigan had (by making QLD and Aus sides)

Badel says Carrigan is on 500k a season for 2023, 2024

EDIT: Badel saying they will be seeking a $100k-plus upgrade for Patty

Carrigan's manager, Jeff Jurotte says:

“We’ll talk to the Broncos about an upgrade for Pat,” said his manager Jeff Jurotte.

“Pat is happy at the Broncos, he is very loyal to the club, but we’d like a slight increase on his current deal.

“He is the only Broncos player in the Australian World Cup team and he was the Wally Lewis Medallist this year in his first State of Origin series.

“I think Pat is one of the most influential players in the Broncos squad and we’re being very sensible in our approach on this.

“We’re not asking for $1 million, we understand the Broncos have a salary-cap to work through but we feel Pat warrants an increase given his rise to the representative ranks this season with Queensland and Australia.”

Pat Carrigan says (doesn't mention contract):

“I’m really grateful to be in camp here with a lot of great players and some pretty good forwards,” Carrigan said.

“The best players keep finding things to get better at. I want to watch and learn and not get complacent.

“We haven’t accomplished anything at the Broncos yet, to be honest. There are a lot of driving factors that have got me hungry for next year.

“I want to keep getting better and help us play finals football next year.”
I'm a bit torn on this. One part is that you have signed a contract, both parties accept a certain amount of risk in doing so.
-Patty may perform above his value at that time (benefitting the club) or
-he may miss games because of injury/suspension, or experience a decrease in form and not warrant his salary (Benefitting patty).

We have also given increases in good faith only for that player to demand an even larger increase or release.

I would consider a wage increase with the proviso that his existing contract is extended. Because he is on "unders", is a clean skin, a good leader and likely future captain I would even say, ok we will actually give you a raise of 150k (above what he is asking) But with a 2 year extension beyond your current one.

What irritates me is that the roosters have players like manu on unders, but his management has not pushed for a wage increase. Karl Morris, DD or ikin (whoever is worst) have to start playing golf with the players And making a few "bets".

What Pattys manager failed to mention is the injuries and suspension.

Broncos first choice hooker, Billy Walters:

"I’m happy with the club offering two years. I’m not old but it’s nice to secure as many years as you can while you can. It’s going to be a big two years for me to hopefully extend that for a longer period. I was really happy to only miss one game. I was happy to get in a full year with no injuries."
"Until about round 19 we were on top of the world. Then it was a disappointing way to end the season. We’ve still got to take the positives out of what we achieved and the potential we’ve shown. We have got a lot of young boys in the squad that will learn from this year. Hopefully we can improve on that for next year.”
“I came to the Broncos and ‘Kevvie’ has always been a big fan of me at nine. I told him I wanted to try for the six jersey first and we’d talk about nine later. I was lucky enough to play a couple of games at the start of the year at six but didn’t really cement my spot there."
“He spoke to me about moving to hooker. It was either that or go back and play Queensland Cup. I obviously jumped on board playing hooker and I thought I showed some good things at points. Other times I felt like a bit of a passenger that was just there to pass. I need to be more than that if I want to be a good hooker."
“I didn’t train at all at hooker in the last pre-season so I was pretty happy with what I did at nine having not done a pre-season there. I’ve got a chance this pre-season to focus on the position. You have to have fitness to make a lot of tackles and then be able to produce something in attack. I have to get some more combinations with the middle forwards and halves. We didn’t have much chance to work on our combinations during the year.”
“I know Kevvie’s really motivated. We finished the season and instead of wanting to have a break, he wanted to get straight back into it. He is already planning next year and finding ways for us to improve. He wants to get back into it and prove everyone wrong … that we are a team that can win the comp and we just lost our way a little bit. I’m sure he’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again next year.”

The recession we had to have.

Nah , I like the kid .
Like he said let him train in the position over the off season and develop his modus operandi . Then judge .

It can take a season for guys coming off knee reco s to get back to best form as well .So I am optimistic .
But also wish Paix and Smoothy to be viable options and fighting for spots in the team .

He's our first choice hooker. He played more games for us than any other player last season. There is no reason why we can't judge him already. Whichever way your judgement lands.

February will be trials .
Games early March . That`s when we can start to judge .

Who knows Nov 1 might throw up some surprises ?

From the horses mouth. Wonder how many other players that weren’t good enough for their first choice position got that option.
Quite a few players have openly said they wanted to play elsewhere. For example:

Farnworth (fullback)
Oates (2nd row)
Staggs (five-eighth)
Cobbo (fullback/centre)
Paix (half)

Lol McHunt liked this because it is his agenda but also proved it to be wrong in his next post.
