Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Thomas Flegler is likely to reject a big Manly offer (est. ~4 million over 6 years, starting in 2024) and stay with the Broncos:

“I have been at the Broncos since I was a kid and I don‘t plan on leaving. For myself, I need to play good footy, more importantly for the team rather than myself. You would be lying if you said you didn’t think about it, but I have been at the Broncos since I was 15 and this is home for me.”
“I haven’t thought about making a final decision at the moment. First things first is to have a good pre-season and train hard and then I guess we will get into those contract talks next year. I came through the Broncos under-20s with the majority of the NRL squad so I don’t see myself moving any time soon.”
“Nothing (that he gets penalized for) is intentional but I am an aggressive player and I’m not going to stop that. Some tackles will slip up or the ones that aren’t intentional are the hip drops, but that’s just the game we play in today. Things will happen accidentally, but I’m an aggressive guy and that’s the way I will continue to play. I do work on my discipline, it does let me down at times but I plan on staying on the field for the majority of the season.”
You’re the kind of hard nosed forward we need Tommy boy! You along with Cobbo, Patty, Herbie and few more are must keeps for us for long. Hope the stupid NSWRL settle down on the salary cap very soon so that we can extend these players for long.
Great to hear someone talk deep of loyalty which this club needs rather than entitled bitch ass crocodile tears.

Thats terrific news, Flegler is one of our sides most valuable players in my opinion.

Well other than Billy he`s the only one with a set of balls on him .
The rest are athletes not footballers .
Not much use when he's dumb as a rock and he's still still saying he won't change his game.

I'd rather someone useful for 20 games a year instead of a part time first grader who gets months off paid each year.

I thought he was a little better this year, still did dumb shit but seemed to cut out a dece amount (whilst still getting unfairly targeted by officials).

As long as he keeps on the trajectory, he'll come good. Hopefully we're paying him for what he is currently though, not what he potentially could be - though he does have the potential to be the leader of the pack alongside Carrigan.

I wish he would've just said that he's changing his game, etc.

He doesnt actually have to do anything different, but at least put it out there to change the narrative.

NRL is dictated and manipulated by media.... simply saying "yeah I'm a fucking saint now after correcting my technique" probably has the refs taking less notice of him in a game.

Saying what he said just keeps the target on him, except he's not Victor playing for the rorters who is allowed to get away with shit

A good indicator of how shit we've been if he's one of our most valuable

How dare you! As president of his fan club, I demand an apology!

But seriously, I do get your point but he had a pretty good season this year, a couple of excellent games. He was on the fringe of origin and is still really young for a prop which a lot of people forget. He is the perfect build for what this rubbish called rugby league is now, you watch, next year he'll do a Carrigan.

Flegler right now is a $350k a year prop getting played way more than that and doesn't deserve it. He has plenty of potential, but I wouldn't be breaking the bank to keep him or Payne on big money.

Payed more I should have said

He said he is working on his discipline .
I think he has more pros than cons .

As much as I like Flegler and the way he plays, his brand of aggressive, enforcer footy is being intentionally eradicated by the NRL.

Big (completely legal) hits are often penalised now for no reason other than appearing violent, and with aggression and intensity comes the potential for arms or shoulders accidentally making contact with the head. Even if this contact is totally accidental (or even unavoidable) and no damage is done, it still results in ridiculous unnecessary sin bins, send offs and suspensions.

Flegs has all the skills of a good prop, but the things that could make him truly terrific as a player are the same things that would make him a liability. More than happy for him to stay on reasonable money and hope he can try to reign it all in and find a way to exist in today's soft game, but I think a team would be stupid to pay an enforcer player like Flegler or Radley big bucks anymore. A player like Tallis nowadays would be exactly the same - a penalty and suspension magnet that hurts the team more than helps.

Really unfortunate... would love to have seen a player like Flegler going bezerk in the 80s / 90s before everything became so pathetic.

That's certainly true but I think it's also fair to say nearly everything that's landed Flegler in trouble over the last couple of seasons has been very preventable.. The vast majority of misdemeanors which have landed him in the sin bin & suspended have been late shots, high shots and silly stuff he's done at the tail end of tackles (hip drops etc) .. There's no reason he can't clean up a lot of that stuff, maybe not entirely because that's just the nature of 'red lining' it in the front row at the most elite level of the game .. But I'm certain he can learn to be that enforcer type by entirely legal means and by being a little smarter
