POST GAME PSC - Broncos vs Cowboys

Defence still looks really concerning. A team of very talented players all playing as individuals.

Madden and Mozer looked promising. Thought Marty was our best forward

Great result.

They started well but I was instantly reminded of the corresponding game from last year. Sure enough with their first real opportunity the Cowboys have the Broncos on their heels and they work a simple play to put Val over.

I said in the pre-game I was looking for the Broncos to turn it up after points scored. Instead, they folded, invited the Cowboys up their end, gave away penalties for dissent, and only got away with it when Robson made a mistake out of dummy half.

As well weighted as Madden's kick was, the try would never have been scored if Feldt didn't needlessly come running in to challenge it. I can't fault the Broncos for playing the percentages but for me that was another instance of the Cowboys making simple errors.

Then the try to Feldt was typical of the type of errors Brisbane would make. They do the hard stuff, but then they failed to defend the short kick off and to make matters worse, Nanai puts them on the attack because the team takes too long to respond.

I thought the Broncos did well to hang in during the second half. Still feel like the ball was in the Cowboys court for the majority of that half but some crucial errors and some low-key Trenting by the refs kept Brisbane in it.

I was mostly pleased with the final 15 and the players who came on during that period. Hoeter & Arthars in particular came up with some fantastic plays. Arthars is going to get a ton of credit (deservedly) but that effort from Hoeter to sum up the Dearden kick and just put position himself properly so he could make a clean play was big. Nobody wanted a piece of that but he put his hand up - that and his kick for himself won me over.

@BroncosAlways I'm not sure if I've ever seen Drinkwater's action pulled up, at least for a goal line drop-out. For whatever reason I think there was something involving Gutherson, in the Round 1 2021 game, but that may have been kicking it before it had touched the ground (and being pissed off the refs were so pendantic with Coates' borderline pass to start the game, but no Gutho kicking it on the mark).

It's rare for players to get called on a technicality for goal-line drop outs. The one that always comes to mind was DCE on debut where they called him for kicking off the mark (then seemingly only him as they quickly forgot about that agenda).

Finally I got exactly what I wanted out of Mozer. Blake didn't look out of place and was willing to create out of dummy half which is exactly what I wanted to see from him. If anything he out-did himself and I would have preferred he didn't go looking for goal-line drop outs - that nearly cost Brisbane the game.

*Sigh*, alright, I've cooled my jets enough to post.

First of all, very happy with our defence. The Cows had a mountain of possession on our line with no small amount of help from the refs and could only manage 18 points. We stuck solid and barely dropped our heads, especially with all the pressure being applied. Staggs remains our biggest weakness on the line. He just cannot close gaps on his outside to save his life. That with his quiet performance in attack and he's proving to be a massive disappointment.

Mozer only played very limited minutes but I was impressed with what we saw. His passing was crisp, he took the line on with no fear and we were certainly not weaker for having him on the field. He really can't develop fast enough because our other hooker options are mediocre at best. Paix was definitely better than Walters, but that isn't saying much, and he has a tendency to get ragdolled by the defence when he takes runs from dummy half. It happened a couple of times tonight and it brought the flow of our sets to a sudden stop.

Cobbo was okay at fullback, but he is clearly the inferior choice to Walsh. I hope he can see that himself but lets face it, he's too thick for that. We can only hope he stays content on the wing because otherwise, the door is over there. Same story for Staggs. We're way too flush with quality backliners now to be tolerating shit performances every week. Mariner, Arthars, Sailor and Pereira are all begging for a spot.

Our starting props were predictably amazing. Carrigan is on track to be an all timer, at least as far as the Broncos are concerned, and say what you want about Haas, he remains a metre eating machine in the front row. As long as both of them stay healthy, we won't have to worry about field position at the very least. Madden put in a solid showing, he's going to be a decent foil for Reyno, but footy gods willing the skipper stays somewhat fit, because we need him out there. Scoring tries from kicks is not going to be enough to be competitive. We need structure and leadership, and that's what he provides.

Mam had some poor moments, especially in defence but he is still young and is still maturing. Given enough time, he could be a star 6 and the perfect partner for Reyno in his twilight years. It would also be nice to have a partner ready made for when Walsh inevitably gets moved to the halves.

Finally, the officiating. Something really smells about the way we're being treated on field. There is NO CHANCE the Cows were so much more disciplined than us to justify the difference in penalties and 6 agains. They were sleeping on us in the ruck all night and ginger ale said and did absolutely nothing about it. It's beyond the pale, and it's way past time Kev (or Ikin or Donuts or SOMEBODY with authority) took some of that rage we saw in the sheds at the back end of last year and directed it at the NRL. Robinson or Stuart would have nuked the stadium from orbit if they were in the Broncos box tonight.

I really like the middle combo that carrigan, hass and Jensen form. They just seem to complement one another.

I think we looked our best when they started, and flegler came off the bench. Happy with tapau and i hope he keeps it up.

Our middles look good but our second rowers are a concern. They don't produce much in attack, so you would at least hope they really tied up the edge defence (I.e. gillett), but they just aren't.

There wasn't anything illegal about Drinkwater's drop-kick.

It's on the mark, it bounces once, it goes 10 metres. There's no law that says players can't fake to kick high and go low and short.

After the Cowboys went short earlier in the night, the Broncos should have had someone there but they fell asleep.

I’ve mentioned this before, but the thing that impresses me most about Mozer that may go unnoticed is his approach to defending. He has a great knack for holding guys up and calmly waiting for the bigger middles to help him complete the tackle, often winning the wrestle and slowly turning the attacker onto their backs. I actually think this is the part of his game that most resembles Cam Smith.

I was happy with his performance and though he didn’t fully demonstrate his abilities in attack, his defensive efforts were what I wanted to see the most and I thought he did well.

He may be closer to NRL ready than I thought. But still think getting around 20 Q Cup games before making the long term move to first grade is important.

I thought our young backrowers from last week provided more punch in attack and a bit more sting in defence. I had high hopes for Riki and capewell but they’ve been pretty disappointing for 12 months now.

I thought Mozer did well, big mistake was not being on the mark for the drop out. Unlike him not to be aware.

Broncos have definitely improved their stopping of off-loads. The Cowboys only had five last night- 293 against last season- worst in the league at 12 a game. Both Titans and Cowboys were below 12.

One try in the last 10 minutes of the two trials impressed me too- they've worked on not just fitness but being smart in defence until the end. Again last season they were the worst in the league at the last 10 minutes- 100 points.

Huge output from Patty but if I were to be hypercritical I think his passing game was a bit rusty last night
So just don't be a hypercritical **** then!
Just love him FFS!
🤣🤣🤣

I do agree though, he's still 5 to 10% away from being perfect👍

Genuine question...
If you could swap him with anyone, who would you rather have?

Loved Tapaus technique driving In low when defending the line. I hope it's picked up by the rest of the side.
All tries off kicks is a concern for me although Riki butchered one by not passing.
Overall I'd say 7 / 10 . Let's hope we keep a low injury toll for once then we are a sneaky chance with some other squads slightly weakened from last year.

What do you guys think about picking Mariner in the 17 jersey?

I mean, I think the choices for that spot are: Piakura, Mariner, Palasia, Willison or two very unlikelies in Bayliss-Brow and Te Kura.

Last season due to reduced interchanges and HIA, many teams carried a back on the bench. I actually think it makes a lot of sense as he can cover any backline position clearly and if the fullback goes down, Cobbo can go there and if a second-rower goes down, Staggs can go there.
