POST GAME PSC - Broncos vs Cowboys

Mozer looked good in his cameo, but not sure you can rely on him straight away to churn out 40mins in NRL... because Paix can't play 60.

Give Mozer time in Qcup and build him up to playing 60mins down there... once he's doing that and controlling the game that's when he'll be ready to make the step up.
No he needs to learn to play 80 in cup. Sick of producing blokes who aren’t capable of playing 80 in that position. 60 in cup is about 40 in NRL. 80 every week in cup will have him conditioned and prepared to shoulder most of if not all that role once he has become accustomed to first grade.

What do you guys think about picking Mariner in the 17 jersey?

I mean, I think the choices for that spot are: Piakura, Mariner, Palasia, Willison or two very unlikelies in Bayliss-Brow and Te Kura.

Last season due to reduced interchanges and HIA, many teams carried a back on the bench. I actually think it makes a lot of sense as he can cover any backline position clearly and if the fullback goes down, Cobbo can go there and if a second-rower goes down, Staggs can go there.
The way Staggs is playing I’d put Staggs on bench. He can do second row and centre.

If Walsh is not fit for rnd 1. Herbie to fb and Jessie to centres?

Some pretty gutsy type defense last night which isn't normally associated with the modern day Brisbane Broncos. The Cowboys were rusty (like everyone this time of year) and they had enough chances to score 50 but full credit to the Broncos. They scrambled well and bravely guarded their line for extremely long periods. They still allow their opposition to march up the field far too easily though. You are going to lose most games if you are surrendering 16-1700 mtrs.

I'm not sure what the coming season will bring. I'd say they will hang around the fringes of the eight. Injury tolls and suspension will reflect greatly on their success. They will most likely end up in that elusive 7th-11th corridor. Definitely not a bottom 4 side anymore but nowhere near the elite either.

Went to the game. Skipped through the replay this morning. Haven't read the comments here.

Few thoughts:

1. No one was bad. No major complaints. But no one was great either.

2. Carrigan is a beast. Best on the field, but would like to see his attacking game grow. Which it will.

3. Gutsy effort across the park, but we won't survive the season on guts alone. We need to be smarter in attack, otherwise we'll burn out defending, like last year. We looked as rudderless as we did under Seibold at times. Piakura kicking ffs.

4. Cobbo is not a fullback. Looked gassed halfway through the first half. Still 2 parts klutz, 1 part freak. Needs more ball than he gets on the wing. I would move him to centre.

5. Mixed bag from our top centres. Staggs, did little with the ball. Got found out by Holmes. Farnworth, back to his old tricks. I'll cop shit for this, but I'd switch him with Cobbo. He still plays like a winger. Actively avoids creating overlaps for his outside man. Here's an example (start 48:57 in):

6. If Herbie's on the wing, and Selwyn's at centre, I'd be close to elevating Mariner into the other centre. I don't know what to do with Staggs, but something's not working. How many weeks will we give him?

7. Madden and Mam, undecided. Lot to like there - skills - but looked a little overwhelmed. Can definitely get by with Madden in for Reynolds but someone will need to steer the ship. It won't be either of these two. Not yet, anyway.

8. Riki, as ever, one of our best in defence, but his dudded try, backchatting and dumb appeal suggest to me he cares too much about his statistics. If you drop him because of one of his statistics he might only get worse.

9. I think Taupau might turn out to be the buy of season. We need more raging bull. Warren Smith clearly didn't watch his pronunciation video.

10. Last, the hookers. On the plus side, Billy has a lovely long flat spiral pass, something Macca lacked. On the minus, he telegraphs every move, makes aimless meandering runs, and generally doesn't look threatening. Paix looked like an immediate upgrade but again, not the guy with the keys. Whatever. Neither are terrible, but they're uninspiring. Could argue all day over them, but both thoroughly overshadowed by Robson. Maybe with Walsh and Reynolds barking orders it won't matter.

Mozer: looks like the real deal to me. Immediately got the pack on the roll, with decisive passes in front of the man, and a general game awareness we haven't seen in a hooker for a long time. Looked a little lost and overwhelmed a few times, but settled in as the game wound down. Probably needs more time in QCup, but I'd be tempted to bring him off the bench now if one of the other hookers (I don't care, but I'd choose Paix) could play more than 40 minutes.

I think people are ignorant to the fact that Mozer has never even started an ISC game, the most he's played is just 49 minutes off the bench.

Came on after 35 minutes against Hunters- played out the game- 44 minutes
Came on after 30 minutes against Mackay- played out the game-49 minutes.
Came on after 25 minutes against Townsville- played until 65 minutes- 40 minutes.

He was on early against the Blackhawks but gave away two penalties and got put on report against the Townsville onslaught- it was already 22-0 and would be 72-0.

Colts- started against Norths- 32 minutes and injured his shoulder.

15 minutes against Cowboys.

That's his football since May Meninga final. 148 minutes against men.

I think Piakura is set to over take Riki .
He looked good to me last night .

And WTF was Riki thinking when he hit the clear ? Oh here we go ,I`ll run around this full back .

Arthurs did a cpl of things last night that showed why the Broncos keep him on the books .

So just don't be a hypercritical **** then!
Just love him FFS!
🤣🤣🤣

I do agree though, he's still 5 to 10% away from being perfect👍

Genuine question...
If you could swap him with anyone, who would you rather have?
I wouldn’t swap him for anyone. I’m just saying his passing was below the standard he has set for himself. No need to jump to any conclusions about me not wanting him at the club

3 months of training with the big boys and he looked good .
He contributed well with his defence , I liked his aggression .

He did nearly the whole off-season 12 months ago too but that has zero relevance. To survive in the middle against fresh players takes a lot and he hasn't had to do it yet.

He def looked better in that 15 mins than he did in the kids Origin last year .
Looked to be trying to make things happen . Ballsy for a rookie .

Another year on a horse meat diet and he will be a weapon . He looks lanky . You reckon he is the same height as C Smith ??

One things for sure, Mariner > Staggs
Yeah, it

Not sure what your point is though. I don’t think anyone wants Mozer in the team in Round One. My take from last night is that he didn’t look out of place playing against men. Get him into Cup football and ease him in off the bench later in the season if the opportunity presents. He’ll be alright.
