POST GAME PSC - Broncos vs Cowboys

You probably said "why is waters picking 3 hookers?!"...
I didn’t. Post is off to a bad start
I much prefer what Walters did. Got cobbos match fitness up, got him reps in the position in case he needs to be their round 1. If Walsh can't play and we trialled 2 or 3 people in that position for round 1 we'd be fucked for round 1.
Why would we be fucked? 1 game doesn’t give a player any significant advantage regarding fitness. Farnworth has double the NRL games the Cobbo has, plus 3 more years of training as a pro athlete. I’m not arguing for Farnworth over Cobbo (that comes later) but if we were fucked unless Cobbo got to play 80 minutes this weekend rather than, say 60 minutes, then this does little to unfuck anything. What if Cobbo rolls his ankle tomorrow?

I'm not on the farnworth to fullback bus anyway. Great running game but every sweep play or backline movement would stop with him. There's more to a fullback than kick returns. Look how much better we looked with Walsh vs niu. Yes Walsh is a far better player, but the team also looks better bcos he plays link man far better. Not saying cobbo is the answer there (I actually think sailor should be 1st back up he's more like for like with walsh) but he's got far more passing and linkman ability than farnworth.
I agree fully with everything you’ve said here. I think it equally applies to Cobbo who didn’t do any of the things that make a complete fullback other then run hard.

a good amount of people have complained about Kevvie trialing too many people in contentious positions oiver the last two pre-seasons (5/8 last year, and hooker this year).

fullback is not even a contentious position.

Walsh is our first choice by a long way; he trialled Cobbo last night (getting some reps into his legs in case he has to play their in round 1) and Sailor has also played 2 trials (mostly at the back).

so Kevvie has trialled 3 players at least at fullback during this pre-season
I mean, it is contentious though because Walsh may not be available. If anything it makes it the most contentious position until Wlash’s return

I have no issue at all with Kev trialing them in the trials. That’s what they’re for. My complaint is that Kev continues to trial too many people during the season.

You're forgetting Sailor has also been trialled at fullback.

Yeah ,nothin much wrong .
Except that time Val Holmes ran past him and scored . LOL .
In fairness, Holmes makes everyone look ordinary, but we expect more of Kotoni. Jesse and Deine also missed tackles. They all made crucial ones as well.

I'm more concerned with Kotoni's attacking game, the reason we're paying him big money. Ball in hand, Selwyn and Reece are a class above our other backs.

Oh and any ideas Herbert Felix has of playing FB should have been put to rest last night .
Was almost as bad as Selwyn under high balls . At least Selwyn caught the 1st cpl .

I like the idea of Herbie on a wing . Kick returns are his strength . Backline movements not as strong .

I think switching Herbie and Selwyn would result in us scoring more points. Herbie is less likely to bumble Adam's kicks and Selwyn would be more damaging closer in. I reckon both would end up crossing the line more.

Yep I was asking for this last preseason .
I think Selwyn is a much more damaging centre than HF Farnworth . Defence is prolly what is keeping the status quo . Herb is pretty hard to get past in defence .

if your issue with Herbie is his ability under the high ball, then the last thing you want to do is move him to the wing

Truth ...
He didn`t look great last night though .

I'm not opposed to trialling him at the back ... but IMO centre is his best position. He's quick, has good footwork and agility, and he's deceptively strong.

His combination with Oates is also improving, so that's a plus for us

I think with hooker it's good to know they can. Grant played 80 minutes against the Raiders in the finals and 80 minutes during the WC.

If you know your hooker can play 80 minutes you can pick your best bench and not have to pick a hooker for 25 minutes.

I think it frees you up a bit.
Yeah that’s exactly my point. I wasn’t saying it’s a must that he needs to play 80 more so it’s a must he needs to be able to do so.

Seems not to be the case in this trial ?

Didn't seem to be. Probably not a sin bin on this occasion tbh, but at least a warning if it keeps happening you are looking at getting players binned.

In my opinion, Herbie's defence is better and he has safer hands, plus he looks fitter. They both seem to prefer to go it alone in attack, but I rate Selwyn a higher chance of busting through a defensive line. Selwyn is also much more effective when he takes a canter across the field and tries to score. Herbie gets wrapped up nearly every time. I'm not sure either are great at setting other players up.

I don't think the status quo is broken but moving Selwyn to get more ball seems like the power move.

and if Kevvie gave minutes to Farnworth , shed would've whinged about not giving Cobbo/ Farnworth a full game. it's a no win situation.
