SMH (Adam Pengilly) reporting that Souths have been find $15K for having an extra man on the field.

Souths reportedly admitted their mistake to match officials after the match.

Pengilly says that the NRL decided not to dock competition points, but instead issued a "heavy monetary penalty"

no proper quotes from the NRL. but Pengilly said:

Abdo said the bungle was “not good enough” in the aftermath of the incident, but resisted any move to strip them of competition points.

I dunno what an appropriate penalty is. Its clearly not stripping points, because they were well on top then. At the same time $15,000 doesn't sound like a lot either, doesn't Ricky Stuart get fined more during press conferences?

Bit concerned how monstered we got in the second half. We didn't even look close.

Even if we had converted our first half chances, I'd say we were just far too out matched in the second half and they would have caught up.

The correct penalty has to be subjective.

If the extra player contributed in any way to that team having a perceptible advantage then points/differential has to come into play. If one of the players in transition were to touch the ball, decoy, impact on defence or even look like an option in attack, it immediately gets messy. The remedies would be between docking the offender 1 or 2 points, splitting the points, or reversing the win. Whatever seems fairest given the impact.

In Souths' case, for example, where the game wasn't close, had either player got involved, I would say docking them 1 point would be fair.

Otherwise, the fine might seem trivial, but they have to be penalized in some fashion.

not sure that News Corp know the meaning of the word "heavy" ... this is literally the softest penalty ever handed down for similar offences.

it is also the first time this has happened since the interchange cards were brought in.

How is it different from Gold Coast vs. Canberra 2016 and Melbourne vs. Sydney 2020?

Not a rhetorical question, just curious.

You could argue Souths got a benefit on the field. They had the ball and were rolling upfield while we had a man down with Herbie in the bin. It's hard enough to mark up 12 on 13, but when you're looking at 14 blokes in front of you and trying to count, that has to be pretty disheartening. I didn't expect anything else from the NRL and really they probably didn't get an advantage, but deadset how does this shit happen?

What happened there. I don't recall an extra moan on the field.

Radio was reporting this morning that in addition to have an extra man on the field for 20 seconds (yes time frame has changed again) ... that Souths also ran out with a different team to the one listed.

This radio you speak of, reliable source?

What's the penalty for that, if true?

So not only did they field 14 men, they also used 9 interchanges.

ABC and Brisbane Times also reported the interchange blunder. Dragons did it earlier in the year and got charged an interchange before kick off but that was it. Souths didn't use all their interchanges anyway.

The match timeline on nrl.com has them using all 8.
