POST GAME POST GAME [Round 9, 2023] Broncos vs Rabbitohs

What's the go with players helping the ball carrier drive forward. Have seen it slot this year. I was sure it's not allowed. I thought the rule was just for "lending weight" so as to not "lose" ground. I didn't think they were allowed to help drive forwards

You can kind of do what you want as long as you only touch your own player (giggle). As soon as you touch an opposition player it should be considered "impeding the defence" but one again, the refs are creating a grey area that teams can exploit. It's gone from "lending weight" to prevent being driven back, to already we've seen players rushing in to prevent someone going over the sideline (and definitely not just holding their own player), to now helping push them over in rucks to prevent the wrestle, and then pushing tacklers aside in the ruck to take them out of play (a Luai pet play).

They can as long as they don't directly interfere with a defender. As far back as I can remember, it's been allowed.

Surprisingly, we haven't really been thrashed in the media for the loss.

Joey, Freddy and Slater on the Sunday Footy Show put it down to missing Haas and Ezra and playing an in-form Souths side.

Has there been any updates on the 14th man saga or has the NRL just swept it under the carpet? I see Annersley has offered himself for public flogging for the no call vs the Dolphins but nothing for us?

Doesn't matter. It's still a sin-bin offence, so by the rules they are able to go back even after play moved on. Sucks for us, but is at least consistent.
I know it's a sin bin... I'm just curious as to how many have occurred and not been picked up over the course of the season or even since 2021.

I haven't watched the game back (and dont intend to), but everyone seemed to move on pretty quickly at the stadium without fussing about looking for a penalty... so if no one on the field cared then how often does it happen in games and everyone just plays on.

It's only when the bunker decides to bring it back for a penalty that anyone at the ground even knew it happened.

I'm sure moving forward every slight trip will now be a dive from the attacker knowing it will be a 10mins in the bin.

We had like 2-3 in 9 weeks of footy (Kiks was binned earlier in the year), so it will be interesting to see how many suddenly start occurring because the attacker refuses to play the ball until the bunker reviews... could give an insight as to how prevalent it's actually been, but havent been getting picked up by the bunker.

I thought you weren't allowed to drive to gain an advantage. If you drive to help get a try it's not allowed, even if you just have your hand on the back of your own player while they are grounding the ball for a try it is disallowed, so I don't understand how it doesn't relate in other parts of the field.

Is this because Campbell Graham literally formed a rugby style ruck during the match and helped his centre (I think) make decent meters? Thought that looked so dodgy at the time. Was very deliberately two attacking players forming a ruck just as the defender engaged.

@35:02 In slow motion (×.25 speed), you do see Latrell headbutt Reynolds, actually.

Live, I thought, meh, maybe not. But now, it wasn't the initial head clash, Latrell actually does go again with the head.

Is there any articles confirming it or is it just buried somewhere in a press conference?

neither, as far as i can tell.

the figure was reported in an article on Fox Sports, but it wasn't a quote from anyone at the NRL. since that article it hasn't been mentioned again.

Don't have much time these days to comment or read everything but I just wanted to put out there not to underestimate the residual fatigue we would of had as a side coming off a big game in the Darwin heat/humidity. That would have sapped a lot of juice and when you add the liss of Payne in the engine room and Mam out wide it wasn't going to take much to gas us and once we dropped to 12 it was goodnight. It really wasn't a true reflection of us I think.

I agree the result wasn't a good reflection of us but the Darwin heat/humidity would be a pretty crap excuse for mine. I think it comes down to a lack of discipline, shit just not going our way and when the shit isn't coming off, they have a number of players out and they are sitting comfy with couple points clear at the top of the ladder it becomes very easy to just give in and call it a day. Some opportunities go the other way and they give even a slightly better account for themselves in that second half, even with the shit discipline and the key personnel out its a very different story. I think thats really the crux of why we were blown off the park on the scoreboard. But hopefully they learn a bit more from losing this, hopefully it will instill some patience and discipline as well as reinforcing the importance of steel defence. There is plenty of weeks to go in the season and a round 9 loss with players out and a crappy performance has **** all bearings on your ability to win in a couple months time at the pointy end of the season unless you let it affect you. Nothing to see here, as you said it wasn't a true reflection of us.

Plus you could tell from Souths' first try they were getting the bounce of the ball and all that. We did well to hang in there and also not let the score blow out into 40+.

You need a game like this every now and then to come back from strong.

I blame the ikin factor. They all heard ikin is leaving and nobody wants to play for kevvie. Not even billy or Alfie.
