POST GAME POST GAME [Round 9, 2023] Broncos vs Rabbitohs

Time to bring back the Cumberland Throw

Jeremy Smith was a later day exponent of the legit Cumberland throw aka hip toss .
Alfie got into a lot of controversy for tripping . Hands must make contact 1st and must maintain a grip if the legs are deliberately used to trip an attacker .

Ray Price developed the Cumberland throw in Rugby Union . He used it to toss the much bigger 2nd rowers and #8s at line outs .

This is true for about 98.76 per cent of fullbacks.
Tedesco, Turbo, Papenhauzen, Munster, Edwards, Hynes, the Hammer, and even Gutho say hi. These guys (when playing fullback) can get a team moving forward when the pack is struggling, and can change games from within their own half. So yeh its true for most fullbacks, but not the elite ones. My point is more that Walsh is a world beater with a platform, but without is basically nowhere to be seen, and the games you guys have won have been him and Haas. Take Haas away, and suddenly the points fade away.

I also think this of Latrell tbh. A better centre than fullback. What's lucky for us is we have Murray, Walker, Graham and Cook who can change a game with pack that isn't rolling forward.

South Sydney will reportedly cop a fine worth in the region of $10,000 to $20,000 and won’t lose any competition points, for having too many players on the field.

no reports at this stage about action taken against the interchange official

Show me examples of consistent performances where a fullback can push the team forward with no go forward from the middle.

It's fantasy, it might happen in the rare off instance or defending arsy tries to stay in the lead but as something to consistently depend on, no way it's delusional talk.

What actually killed us in that game was how we started the second half from the whistle, and I'm not even saying it was Herbies sin bin it was before that, that just made sure it stayed that way.

You could say Haas and Ezra don't change the result because it was 32-6, but a counter argument to that is when Murray was put in the bin for 10 and Souths were down a man in the forwards, you can't say Haas wouldn't have caused havoc and you can't say Ezra, Reyno and Walsh wouldn't have produced points on the back of that. Our attack for the most part revolves around those three. You take out one and put in someone that doesn't provide the same or similar output, it disrupts that.

That changes the whole match.

Ezra and Walsh make each other better because of the space they provide each other. With those two (and Herbie) coming at you, that's a lot of pace and power, and your decision making as a defender has to be on point or one of them gets through. Then inadvertently the other comes through the line and is backing up to beat the fullback. And this year they have both been popping up on both sides of the field so you just can't sleep, especially with Reyno on the other side or heaven forbit, the three of them link up... It's a frightening prospect, we really lost a lot with Ezra out, he is a genuine superstar of the future. He and Walsh are the future Qld #1 and #6.

And of course you can add Haas into the 'gap producing' column as well because it takes 3 or 4 blokes to get him down. Palasia and Madden simply don't offer the same threats. It's comparable to Munster and NAS going down for the Storm and we have seen how that goes for them even though they still have a gun #9. Or Luai/JFH. Your pack leader and one of your key running threats are seriously big outs. Souths should be concerned that we could have gotten 3 or 4 tries ahead because with our tails up, they don't come back even with those two out.

Penalty no sin bin imo should have been the result
Nah no matter what way you look at it it’s a professional foul. Usually used as a last ditch effort to stop a line break.

None of those guys can consistently get a team moving forward without a strong bunch of forwards. Sure they can come up with great plays that can inspire their team, just as Walsh has shown he can in his short career.

Presser.

Badel to Reyno. You’ve played a lot of football with Campbell Graham Adam - do you think he’s ready for NSW origin selection?

Reyno. He’s a quality player who’s played for Australia. - does that answer your question?
😂

Paix is a pillow in defence .
There is a reason Billy starts . If Paix started , the opposition would dominate middle right from kick off .
this is exactly right. Paix should really never start over Billy at this stage of his career. He is actually quite a decent tackler but he just gets dragged along and pushed back. When he gets gassed he falls off

really wish there was a list of sin bins and what they were for im sure in the last 5 years ive seen trips be nothing more than a penalty on report and move on,there is a list of send offs for the nrl era and the only trip that was a send off was in 99 by matt ridge and i have a feeling he kicked at the legs of the player.
but whatever move on and crush pies seaguls

Just like head high tackles weren`t a send off .
They were dealt with by the judiciary and suspensions because leaving a team 1 player down for the duration was considered too harsh .

actually high tackles are probably the most represented of the nrl era for send offs
rd 2 this year being the most recent

Yep, because nobody used to do them. Because it was a send-off.

Not meaning to sound rude….

I do understand Xzei's frustrations, but to be fair, the NRL did recalibrate what was a sin-bin back in 2021.

Still when you see this from Reynolds back in 2014...

And it wasn't a sin-bin, you can understand why the Herbie one was seen as harsh.

was 2021 the year anything that happened to the head/neck area was getting sent for 10?

Yeah, virtually any foul play became 10 in the bin. So even cannonballs, fractionally late hits, crushers etc. all had the potential to be binned.

Brisbane aren't the only victims here, but I do think they're getting carried away. Especially on things like the hip drop tackle. We can cry until the cows come home about Payne Haas, but the worst was still that Jacob Preston sin-bin.
