2023 State of Origin Discussion

Outside of last year and this year the 18th, 19th, 20th, etc. have always been released back to their club for the weekend's fixtures... unless they are legitimate cover for a starting player under an injury cloud.

If your 18th man is so vital to the starting 17 then they should be in the team anyway or get permission from the club to keep him in the squad... if Dearden is legitimate cover for Munster being under an injury cloud... then fine, that's always been the case and Slater would rightly refuse to release him.

Origin teams have been fine utilising bye players or releasing players back to their club for how many years up until last year... why disrupt the actual NRL comp further than what they already do when it hasn't been an issue up until NRL needing an 18th man to be named.

Hynes sitting out 3 games last year because NSW have to name an 18th man, that didn't play a second of the entire origin series is ridiculous.

Why not have NSW and QLD name a full squad of 22 and then release 18-22 back to their clubs, like it's been for years, and if for some reason you're unlucky enough to lose all 5 of them to injury then that's just unlucky (but just bring another player in... like it would've been all the way up until last year). If everything goes to plan through to next Wednesday then Dearden won't play a second of actual footy and the origin series will continue on... like it always has.

NSW will be in the same position where they have to release their squad players back to club land as well, so it's still even on both sides.

Yes and no.

With the lowering of the requirements to activate your 18th man, there is more chance than ever they get in the game.

Besides in the Cowboys case they didn't name Dearden on Tuesday, so even if Billy released him he couldn't play

Kind of wish Billy had said yes only for the Cows not to be able to name him tbh.

Interestingly we’ve won 3 of our last 4 going in as underdogs.

Sportsbet have a promo going at the moment for same game multis for the match. If any legs fail, your money back. No limit on amount of legs. Usually that promo is only for 2-3 leg multis.

QLD to win.
QLD 1-6
Cobbo, Hammer, Mitchell, Turbo ATS.
Hammer and To’o 1st half try scorers.

$1801 odds.

QLD are great as winning as underdogs, but I wonder how many times we have done it after winning the previous series.

Nsw are going way under the radar here, their backs will monster us, they better be ready.

we don’t have the underdog tag this year.
The betting markets have us as underdogs...

It's more about looking ahead and proper foresight ... yes NSW and QLD need to name an 18th man.... but all going well they wont spend a second on the field, so why is NRL (the actual competition) impacted when there are other avenues.

A club team losing a player that isn't meant to play has been an issue forever, but only ever popped up when the state team wanted to keep them as injury cover. Now it's present for every game.

What has changed from 1980 to 2021 that the 18th man can no longer play for their club side?? Origin teams have always had to deal with their extended squad returning to club games on the weekend... so why now is it suddenly an issue.

Why not make the origin teams name a squad and bring someone in to be the 18th man on game day, but still allow them to play in club land.

Just watched game 3 last year, **** ponga was good.

I feel like putting Walsh there knowing he’s taken his spot after killing it last year is a recipe for disaster. Nsw are all over it.
I get he hasn’t been playing fb but he has his whole life he hasn’t forgotten how to do it.

I don't think it has anything to do with his ability in the position. I'm pretty confident it has to do with Ponga's welfare, full stop. He copped a nothing shot to the chin on Sunday, stayed down and had to go off for a HIA. Correct decision for mine.

I get that but let that be his call! If he goes down than bring in Walsh and tell him he’s done but until then, there will be questions and un wanted pressure on Walsh outside of it already being his first game in the toughest arena.

I’ve had a couple, excuse my grammar, haven’t seen huge in a while so I’ll pick my myself up on my error’s.

😂

Yeah all Ponga's origins have been good. Never seen another player throw the cut out pass try assists in origin like he has, it usually doesn't happen but he makes it look like an NRL game sometines.

Huge will be in to pick you apart shortly I imagine.

I take your point, but I think the far safer option is to simply name Walsh as first up. Least disruptions possible.

I’m pretty sure I’ve agreed with everything you’ve said on here apart from right now. He’s never not produced at origin level. He’s not old like gagai. I understand if he has concerns about concussions but that hasn’t stopped Newcastle.
