So a lot of people blowing up about the ref in the road of smoothy, but what is the actual rule? I know if the ball hits the ref it’s a mutual infringement or some shit and the team whose half it is in gets the ball. But I’m not sure if there is anything to do with the ref getting in the road of a player. I think it’s just an accident with no ruling to be made.
The actual rule is play on. If the ball hits the ref it's a mutual infringement and attacking team gets the ball back but if the ref just gets in the way... Play on. Bit of a shit rule, should at least be a 6 again.

When to blow whistle 8.1 The Referee must carry a whistle which they shall blow to commence and terminate each half of the game.

Except for these occasions the blowing of the whistle shall temporarily stop the play. The Referee shall blow the whistle:

e) when play is irregularly affected by the ball or the player carrying the ball coming into contact with the Referee, a Touch Judge, or with any person not taking part in the match or with any object which should not normally be on the playing field.

Play should have been restarted to the previous PTB. I dont believe there was an opportunity to challenege because play had not stopped.

I’m happy with it being play on, because of a team is defending and defending and it’s the 5th tackle and the other team runs into the ref they don’t necessarily deserve 6 again.

It’s unlucky, but so be it.

However the ref last night should be getting blasted for terrible positioning- he should have been in goal at that point and well out of the way.

Edit: although looks like the rule agrees with you

Having scanned through this morning's media reports on our game, don't it bring a smile to your face reading roughly the same narrative. It goes something like - we now are a serious contender to knock off the 'Riff(raff). All the talk is how we are "jam packed with athletic players" how we "have strike force all over the park", how we can "easily outscore any team", and how much our "defence has improved".

It's just pleasing to know that that old narrative of "but will they fall off the cliff like last year" has been well and truly put to bed. Make no mistake, the Rorters were coming into form and came to play last night. Their season was on the line. The first 20 minutes were brutal and the ref was fairly lenient (to say the least) with Hargreaves. Despite their mighty effort we kept them to zero, zip, nada for the first 40. After that the rorters lost heart and any hope of winning the battle, it was only the second half ineptness of the officiating that kept them in the game.

It was that first half performance that served as the Broncos official announcement that we are in this to win it this year. Bring on the Cows....and....

Frikkin giddy up!!!!

No ref worth a damn will put themselves where he was in the middle of an attacking team on the line.

Atkins didn’t need to stop, just sprint out of the way like every other ref manages to do

I don't think 6 again would be fair....the attacking team is gaining an advantage.

Should be just play the ball on the same tackle number.

To be fair, though, where's he supposed to go?

Oh, yeah, right, straight ahead into all that empty space in front of him.

I'll watch Annersley's dopey press conference on Monday just so I can hear him justify Atkins dopey action but saying he should've sent Reece Walsh to the bin because of the game circumstance.
Honestly who would be that shocked if Annersley says that all Atkins did wrong was not sin bin Walsh for intentionally sending Smoothy into the ref.
