PLAYER Selwyn Cobbo

well written thoughts.

only problem is, it has been "reported" (yes, I know) that he will NOT accept a lower contract to stay.

IF this is true (bloody managers) then he is still looking for TOP TIER, MOTIVATED, FIT, GAME WINNING money to be unmotivated, uninterested, slow, unfit.

As the saying goes, You Reap what you sow.

Love him when he is ON, but that is so rare now, and almost never in the 2nd half of the season.

this has happened for a number of years, so we know he is NOT NRL TOP TIER level.

Stop thinking we can get him there and move on for someone that will give their ALL for the team all year round.

Just my 2 cents

This, to me could be a big part of what’s going on with him. As soon as I set the new record in swimming, and the time was confirmed .. that was it for me. No real interest in continuing, I had achieved what I wanted.

Amateurs vs professionals .
He`s turning his back on millions of dollars . Not just his engagement in a sport .

I don't get all the hate tbh, before his stint at fullback he looked solid, fit and was our best metre making back who is safe for highball. I think you guys are mistaking his laid back personality for laziness his stats show a different story. Calling it right now he will accept a reduced contract and stay at Broncos. If his manager manages to find another club that will pay good money for him it's a win for us, making good profit on a winger when we desperately need money for players in more crucial positions is good business imo.

Every single year of his career is the same. Starts good, falls down to be the most lazy player in the team. No football brain inside his head either.

He's not a good centre, he's not a good winger, and he's hardly a fullback.

I think the issue in this instance is that it looks like his conditioning is dropping as the season goes on.

Sounds like during preseason he was ripping in and started the season in great shape, but in recent times he looks like he's getting gassed.

That could be that he's just not fit enough to play fullback, which is far, but if his fitness has dropped over the season then thats not a great sign to a coach like Madge.

If the rest of the leadership group and squad are buying in and maintaining their fitness as the season carries on whilst Selwyn is being lax with his, then it's also not a good look from him to his team mates.

How does an NRL coach being paid $$$$$ and his team of trainers who are also being paid $$$$$.....allow a player in their squad to become
unfit?

Isn't that primarily their ****en job?

Yes you seem to be right. He is wanting decent money.

Something is worth whatever the highest bidder is willing to pay. If, with all his short comings, a club wants to pay a high rate to take the gamble then Selwyn should absolutely take it. It’s not his fault he gets offered whatever it may be.

I just don’t want it to be us that pays him on potential.

I think the best outcome for both us and Selwyn is this:

A) he stays on a relatively cheap contract that won’t comeback to bite us if he isn’t in our top 17
Or
B) he signs with a rival on great money. He gets his pay day, we aren’t impacted by the risk, and Selwyn enjoys playing comfortable footy. Given us the odd highlight to smile at and having nothing invested when things aren’t going well

Well, one could argue that they haven’t allowed it which is why he was dropped and the coach publicly saying it’s about meeting club standards. They’ve also seemingly not offered him a contract.

Short of chasing him around with a cattle prod and giving him a full time minder to smack the grog and maccas out of his hands - that’s as good as not allowing it gets

Still doesn't make sense to me, only time he looked gassed was at fullback because it isn't his position and he doesn't have game fitness to play that role (even in saying that he was still getting good metres whilst playing fullback). Jesse Arthur's looked just as gassed and only played one game back there. For me cobbo is a winger and a winger only, he does that job really well for us and has no issues, nobody was complaining about fitness issues until he was scapegoated for losses where we was played out of positon. If he decides to take winger money for Broncos renew him if he wants more then we have just made good profit the end

Well that's just not true, he is our best winger on the squad. Centre and fullback no.

If another club wants to pay the money then good luck to them, good business Broncos. When Coates left I had the exact same thoughts, great player but not going to fork out ridiculous coin for. Broncos have made it clear they don't want to sign him on a big contract hence why they haven't yet. Calling it right now he will stay at a reduced rate

They aren't with them 24/7. Cobbo could be eating and drinking like a piglet and doing no conditioning or recovery work outside of Broncos training for all we know.

“I don’t know where this report has come from but I haven’t had a single meeting with Selwyn Cobbo. I don’t know him. I’ve never met him.
Look, Selwyn is a wonderful talent but there’s been no discussions for him to come here.
For a start, with our salary cap the way it is, we can’t afford him.
Selwyn isn’t going to take a pay cut to come to Souths, so it’s not even an option for us anyway.
I’ve had no chats with him.”

Could well be a case that Wayne wasn’t too impressed with their meeting that they didn’t have?
Or Wayne channeling his inner Gus..

Probably just putting pressure on his management to take a smaller deal.

Wonderful talent, but we dont have cap space
Isn't going to take a pay cut so he can't come here
