PLAYER Selwyn Cobbo

I think most of us aren't worried about what the current version of Selwyn Cobbo can do in another team, it's the bloke that was hyped up when he was making his debut for Origin and actually had a pretty good few games there. It's what he could be based on those performances. The potential is what we are afraid of losing.

This current Cobbo we've been seeing, that won't be something anyone loses sleep over.

@Cult was on the ball with Cobbo and his lack of professionalism but got shot down. Selwyn on here has had plenty of excuses made for his lack of professionalism. He's as capable of being an elite player as he is of being a big let down. I've said it before, but i think his career will go the way of a Milf or Dave Taylor and he wont fulfill his potential because he simply wont work hard enough to succeed.

I think the disappointing thing is we all wanted him to be the next JYY and the "I want to be a Bronco when I grow up" perpetuated the fairy tale. If he can get back to 22-23 Cobloaf we'd all be happy but its definitely looking Milford territory.

I still have hope but by the sounds of it his game today wasn't spectacular.

Everyone wants him back in the starting 13 at his best. He's an elite talent, just somethings not right. You can see that when he smiles every time he scores he loves the game and the club. It's not like he's suddenly lost speed at age 23/24 and needs to go inside. He looked like he'd lost weight early in the season and was fit. But for whatever reason he's been looking gassed and flat for the last month.

If he doesn't come back in the outside 5 this season have him as replacement for Carrigan at 13.

I think it would be absolutely unforgivable if the club got rid of him.

It would be unforgivable if they kept him.

Oh come on. It's up to Selwyn to demonstrate to the club that he gives a shit, and at the moment he simply isn't, and doesn't. He got dropped from the first grade side, they went on to belt the Titans, had a chance to come out in QCup and make a statement after the fact.....and he didn't. He stunk it up there too.

Cobbo is very much on the Milford path. He has lost his love for the game, or at least the love of success. He needs to find it again or give it up. If like Milford he's happy to earn minimum wage playing park footy for the Gulls then good luck to him, but the days of players owning a spot at the Broncos with just the odd highlight every 3-4 games are (hopefully) over.

Maybe Cobbo has achieved what he set out to do and there's nothing really after that? in 3 years he went from Q Cup to playing Origin, Australia, made a grand final. That's pretty good going for a kid from Cherbourg.

maybe there's a bit of what now? for Cobbo.

This, to me could be a big part of what’s going on with him. As soon as I set the new record in swimming, and the time was confirmed .. that was it for me. No real interest in continuing, I had achieved what I wanted.

I mean if you can't get fired up when near 40,000 people cheer at the sight of you then yeah maybe some self reflection is needed. Go away and find what you loved about playing for the Broncos again mate.

i dunno man i think maybe he's a pea hearted stone kicking fair weather footballer..probably not the optimal choice for our team atm

Yes I agree he can do a lot better and be fitter as well. But what does it say about the rest of the team when he was second for run metres when not even trying.

Cobbo thought there was food at the end of it.

He is another TPJ, Dave Taylor etc

Has the NRL world at their feet & are too bloody lazy to do anything about it.

If Cobbo hangs around on a reduced contract I think moving forward his position needs to be changed.
Play him as a bench 13. Simple instructions get involved as much as you can, back up and just play footy.
As a winger he was pushing forwards off him to start the year. Adds something different to our middle attack wise.
A bench of Cobbo, Willison and either Hunt or Walters covers 1-13.

The only club I can see making a big play for him at the moment is Souths, which I could see him going there.

Firstly, I think we can all agree we want to see the best of Selwyn, whether here or at another club. The casual fan of the game wants to see him flourishing. Sadly however, I've accepted that it might not be here at Brisbane and I am OK with that.

Cobbo will always generate interest and scrutiny because of how high his ceiling has looked from such a young age. We were patient when he showed flashes of brilliance alongside errorrs and down games because of his youth and we celebrated in ecstacy when he was in space beaming with a smile.
The truth is though, right now he is about to enter the prime years of his career and a lack of consistency can no longer be forgiven, nor will I accept the throw-away phrase of "potential".

We've seen a lot of clubs can find dynamic, athletic wingers and they are not a blue chip position you need to pay 650k+ for. Find someone who can do a role.
To suggest we would pay Cobbo even upwards of 800k because he might one day be a fullback? We already have our 10+ year franchise player. Why would we throw the balance of our cap to have a luxury signing like Cobbo?
If he accepts his form warrants lesser I'm all for keeping him.

But i want my team to be a winning one. I want to see hard work, good attitude and players thay would die on the field for the jersey and fans.
Cobbo displays none of these traits on a week to week basis.
As others have said, gone are the days of celebrating 1 good game a month at this club. We've had a lack of standards here for 15+ years and rewarding Cobbo with a handsome contract would be contradictory to what we are trying to achieve.

He doesn't deserve these nicities just to have him here. The only reason a reduced wage is coming into it, is because he's crap.

Time to cut the kid loose. Every year it's the same disinterested shit after he makes us think he's come good.

Imagine you’re a simple kid from a very rough area.

You’re naturally quick, strong, agile and instinctively good at footy.

As a teenager you carve up everyone with very little effort. Footy is fun for you because it comes so easily.

You make it to first grade at the biggest club in the NRL. Now you have to train every day, travel every weekend, live away from your family. Every error you make is replayed in front of your entire team while your coaching staff hammers you.

You’ve never really been big on fitness or exercise and now you’re being asked to maintain a meticulous strength and conditioning routine.

You get injured constantly. Knee complaints, wrist complaints, hip complaints, serious concussion. Still have to maintain strict training regime. Play through the pain, get hammered by fans and media when you aren’t your usual self.

You need to watch everything you eat. Every minute of the day. Follow strict meal plans. Your skin fold and weight is constantly being measured and evaluated.

Your mates outside of footy are in their early 20s too. Living a normal life, making bad choices. Drinking more than they should, occasional recreational drug use, smoking, going out, going to the pub, eating whatever they want.

You’re naturally shy and introverted. You’re paraded out in front of millions of viewers, at least once a week, as well as having a microphone a d camera shoved in your face every opportunity and your meant to have something meaningful to say to the nation.

You’ve grown up heavily involved in a particular cultural community, now you spend all your time at an organisation of hundreds, a team of 30, and maybe half a dozen at most share your background.

You loved footy but you’ve never really been into fitness. You have never really been a competitive or ambitious person. You don’t care much about money, and in your community having a lot more money than your peers can actually make life really complicated. You’re introverted and don’t like attention. You never asked for all the pressure.

Maybe professional sport is actually just not for him, or Milf. It doesn’t make him a weak or bad person.

No one questions someone else in a high pressure high paying job when they opt out. “I was an investment banker but I was always on the road, under extreme pressure. Always having to network. It just wasn’t for me”. No one is calling that guy a pea heart.

That said I don’t want guys like Cobbo or Milf at our club on big contracts if their heart isn’t in it. If Cobbo leaves at the end of the year, I think we can say he matched his contract value, had some great moments. I just hope the club doesn’t re-sign him in the false hope he has some big turn around in personality. If we do re-sign him it should be on very humble contract. $350k or something
