OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

Lots of rumours doing the rounds on Reddit - so take this sparingly - that Payne and his management wanted a clause that would allow him to renegotiate the deal every 12 months. Broncos said no and souths said yes.

If there is any truth to the above then I'm glad that the Broncos didn't agree to the terms. I love Payno and appreciate everything that he's done for the club but renegotiating every twelve months would be an absolute cluster f**K to the Broncos salary cap.

It doesn't allow for future planning as the club is constantly in limbo waiting to see what Payne wants to do (or how much more money he wants). It also means that Payne and his management would forever be in the driver's seat regarding contract negotiations.

I wouldn't be surprised if his deal with Souths has several release clauses. Apparently he spent a lot of time in the Samoan camp talking about R360 - if that ever legitimately gets off the ground , then he is guaranteed gone.
If so then for sure this is the best result for Brisbane and good luck to Souths.

Yeah, he’s locked in on the R360 money.

The club has been through the “will he, won’t he” rigamarole enough times. Hope Souths enjoys that circus.

I think he made up his mind to leave when R360 came knocking and he was never going to commit to anything long term if it could get in the way of a R360 deal.

There is nothing in Haas’s past negotiations that would suggest he is going to move to Sydney, and to a worse team, for the same money, which would effectively be less given cost of living in Sydney.

Whatever the deal is, whatever clauses it includes, must be worth his while. At some point it’s going to come out.

I don't get the cost of living argument, it seems he's not staying there forever and likely to live it up in one of Crowe's places for next to nothing, or his Brisbane properties effectively pays the rent for him. His Brisbane properties are probably worth over $5m, and might more than double that by time he's 30.

Its about the money, its aways been about the money.

Yeah when you're getting paid as much as Payne I don't think the cost of living effects you too much.

Though he learnt from Lomax.

Have a backup plan if R360 fails

Do his parents still require legal representation? Aren’t they both locked up for the foreseeable future?

Or are you simply predicting they commit crimes in the future?

His father is facing extradition from the Philippines to Indonesia on smuggling charges that carry the death penalty .
I would reckon he needs all the help he can get to 1st avoid the extradition and second fight the charges if he goes to Indonesia .

Remains to be seen how many games he gets in a side that has both Mitchell and Fifita included. That pair only played a combined 19 games last season. So if they're crocked again in 2026 he'll be carrying the side on his back and still be expected to put in an average of 53 to 63 minutes a game.

Well said. We still have a spine that’s going to be envy of the comp for 10 years. I’m sure that most clubs would move heaven and earth for Walsh if he was available and they’d do a lot for Mam and Pezet. Who do souths have, Grey and Humphries?
Our club will FINE. Let’s be honest, others clubs could lose a forward and they’re in disarray and we have the blessing of losing this amazing player but yet we have so many more quality backups that can replace him. We are a blessed club and it’s not the end of the world. The Rabbitohs will continue to struggle even with Fifita and Haas. The media love talking them up every single year but I don’t see them being anywhere near the top even with those guys.

Unpopular opinion.....

Haas is the player i least care about leaving.!

Actually if any other players want to leave they should too.

Do it now !!!

If its true we wouldnt come to the table with this contract renegotiation every 12 months so he can keep chasing the R360 then good on the Broncos. We dont need the circus and constant drama associated with Payne. Its disruptive.

The timing of the announcement is what pisses me off. The day before our season launch which was also going to be about celebrating our first premiership in nearly 20 years and 2 days before we head to the WCC which every player seems to be taking very seriously. It's ****ed, I think it's a really classless move from a player that the club has given so much. Yes Payne has given the club plenty too but why did he have to do it now. I have heard reports that Wayne leaked it but shouldn't there have been communications in the contract negotiations not to be a ****? I think he is weak as piss for this. Amazing player and pretty incredible to get to where he is considering where he comes from, but fails the decent bloke test and not for the firs time.
It was Bennett that released it wasn’t it? I guess it was more him causing the disruption. Old ****.

I thought Buzz retired. What's with all these headlines!?!

This kind of gutter journalism is pretty gross. Madge has just won these guys a premiership, something no-one, not even their personal dick-ride Wayne Bennett could do in the last 19 years and they are straight into him before the next season has already started. He literally can't do anything right.

I was shocked yesterday, angry last night and non plussed today. I think the regularity of his contract rigmarole will not be missed. I believe he will be way more marketable in NSW than Brisbane also. Good luck to him. Lets put his money to good use.
