Why would the coach pick him? Maguire does not seem to be having a great couple of weeks with selections / bench usage.

I don't think there was a lot in regards to alternatives. Coates only played four minutes for the Bears on the weekend so the Broncos would be down to Bradley or Lobb.
Still a strange one, would think up against Souths you'd want a more experienced option to take on their left edge attack. Highest try scorer in the history of the game - if that doesn't tip you off on their preference well...

I mean everyone is injured or playing origin... the decision looked to come down to Verhoeven vs Coates... although it sounds like Coates was also injured as he only played 4mins of Qcup.
So I think we were down to our last bodies across the backline.
I would say that Madge didn't help him by playing him on the right, but having him there did surround him with reasonable vets in Reyno, Riki and Arthars... Riki definitely our best backrow defender and Reyno likely our best communicator.
I switched off after like 15mins, but probably could've played Nio on the right wing to help with protecting him.. maybe he was concerned about him having to defuse bombs off the wing as I don't think he has played much wing across his career to date?

Who knows... like BP said he could've grabbed Kane for a week... but maybe he wanted to see how the young guy would go.
I've got no idea how Kane has been playing or how any of the Qcup T&T wingers/centres have been going... maybe they haven't been going all that great, so you take a chance on a kid instead.
If Verhoeven worked out then Madge suddenly has a kid on a low contract with huge upside that he can throw into games against first graders.
